From Janet Welcome back,
When thinking about the newsletter this week I wondered what to write about as we really have
only had a few school days since the last newsletter. Of course I start by saying that I hope that
you have all had a great break and managed to have some time with family or in the garden or
camping or whatever you enjoy. I love the term one break as it gives me time to harvest most
of my vegetables, start to clean up the hot house and chook shed and spend time with my
family.
From a school point of view, much of what I have to tell you, and what I told School Council on
Tuesday night, is about the maintenance done at BEPS over the break. It is not the very flashy
projects or things that you instantly see as you enter the school but it is work that improves the
working environment of all. Some of this work is paid for from money the department gives to
the school for general maintenance, some from the voluntary contributions that many parents
make to the buildings and grounds and some of this work is done by parents. Thankyou, for
being a fantastic and supportive community. Working together is what makes BEPS an
extraordinary school.
We started with a thorough cleaning of all toilet areas and painting of the staff toilets.
Student toilets in main building will be painted on Saturday, 3 May. I was asked why it was so
important to me to improve the toilet blocks in the main building. The answer is simple. The
toilets are always cleaned but to me the general impression when I went into any of the toilet
areas was that they just needed a bit more care and attention. To the staff at BEPS I think that
it is important to respect them by giving them clean and pleasant toilet blocks and this respect
is equally important for the students.
We also managed to get some tree maintenance done that was difficult or dangerous for parents
to do. The contractor climbed the dead trees in two court yards, cut them down, removed dead
limbs and mulched the rubbish. This improves the safety of the school environment.
We had trees pruned along the boundary with our Stewart Street neighbour and the tree canopy
over netball courts reduced to minimise chance of splitting.
Plumbers have installed a tap into hall kitchen. This was a compliance requirement for OSHC.
Some spouting has been cleaned (too wet to do main building but this will be done soon) and
the gutters, downpipe and roof inspected. Some guttering, downpipes and a piece of roofing
need replacing because of rust. We are hoping for less leaks and hence less damage to the
building.
Unfortunately three windows needed to be replaced because of vandalism.
Maintenance clean-up done over holiday by corrections included a massive clean-up of school
especially the pit; spreading of mulch to provide sufficient soft fall under the play equipment;
and helped to dig the soil out in the kitchen garden beds. Thank you to Janine for here tireless
support and supervision of the Corrections Program at BEPS.
Parents then spread mulch and top soil, raked piles of mulch around various areas of the school;
weeded, spread seed and watered it in; put compost and soil into the garden beds and got them
ready for this term. Thank you for your time and hard work.
Just to finish up: Tours for parents interested in enrolling their Prep child at BEPS started today.
Tours will be every Thursday morning during term 2. If you know someone who would like to
have a tour please ask them to ring Angela to book a time. If you have a child who will be
starting in Prep next year, you are also welcome to come along for a tour and ask questions or if
you think that you know the place well enough and don’t need a tour, please just let Angela
know there is a sibling to be enrolled for next year and she will add your name to our enrolment
list.
I look forward to a fantastic term and I hope that you are all ready to learn with your friends.
Have a great week and long weekend

Emergency
procedures
We have had and will be practising our emergency evacuation procedures with all OSHC children and staff.
This can sometimes be a little worrying to the younger and new children. While we will be talking about why
we need to practice these procedures with everyone, it is a good idea to reinforce and continue these
conversations at home to maintain a positive and rounded approach to this challenging subject.
POLICY
UPDATE
We will be reviewing our Booking and Waiting list policies. We would like your input, particularly if you
have policy writing experience or expertise. See Rena if interested.

What’s happening?
We’re turning pink again to support the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s (NBCF) goal to be Breast Cancer free by 2030. It’s time to celebrate the
courage and hope in our own community and salute the women and families affected by this disease with the Pink Friday Market straight after school on
Friday 9th May. All proceeds from the day going to NBCF.
What can I do?
Pink it up - Children, staff and families look the part and pinkify
yourselves.
Bring a gold coin donation to help fund the research for prevention and a
cure.
Pink up your imagination and bake or bring something pink to sell at the
market.
Come along to the Pink Friday market after school. There will be live
music and more pink delights than a Princess’s party.

Hello Parents and Carers,
An article about the BEPS Radio Room has been published on the ABC Splash webpage and is
available here –
http://splash.abc.net.au/teachers/blog/-/b/832501/school-radio-project-boosts-literacy.
It features lots of information about the radio program and plenty of quotes from the children
involved so please jump online and check it out.
Best,
Mel, Jacinta, Chiara and the BEPS Radio Team.
It was National Ride2School Day in week 8 and we had an amazing day with hundreds of people riding and walking to school. Everyone enjoyed a healthy snack, the riding courses in the school grounds, and our assembly and parade. Well done to those students who made the effort to dress their rides up! The BEPS community would like to make a special thanks to all the local businesses that supported us on the day. Brunswick Woolworths on Albert Street for the fruit supply, Reid Cycles in North Melbourne for their prize packs (which included bike locks, pumps, repair kits, lights and bells), and Avanti and Brunswick Cycle Club for their donations. The active and Sustainable travel team would also like to thank all of our students, parents and teachers - everyone who helped make day a great success!
And for those of you who love numbers, we had 90% kids active (made up of walkers and riders).

Battery Recycling at CERES
It is with great enthusiasm that let you all know about our partnerships with Sustainability
Victoria and Melbourne Zoo to recycle mobile phones and Batteries.
BATTERIES: Batteries are toxic time bombs. only 3% a year are recycled, meaning 8,000
tonnes of batteries end up in landfill each year in Australia. So lets get recycling!!
We are now an official partner of Sustainability Victoria's BATTERYBACK program. The battery
recycling bin (its a big model of a battery) accepts all household batteries up to 1kg, including
computer and phone but NOT car batteries.
When the bin is full we call SV they come and empty it and recycle the batteries for us. Check
out the link.
http://www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/services-and-advice/households/waste-and-
recycling/batteryback
MOBILE PHONES: There are nearly 30 MILLION phones sitting around at peoples houses in
Australia waiting to be recycled. In the Congo there has been a raging war over what is known
as "conflict minerals", the minerals that go into our phones, tablets, computers etc... Since
1996, 5.4 million people have lost their lives in the Congo in these wars. The other causality in
all this are the mountain gorillas, who are losing their habitat to the mines, and being eaten by
desperately hungry mine workers who are often forced at gun point to work for minimal or no
wage.
The Zoo has partnered with Jane Goodall to set up a fund to help mine workers and protect the
last of the Mountain Gorillas. The phone recycling scheme generates money that is used through
The Jane Goodall Foundation to help in this desperate situation.
To help, all you have to do is RECYCLE YOUR PHONE AT CERES.
Who would have thought that your humble phone could make such a huge difference to the
world.
Both facilities will be in CERES reception. Lets get busy recycling our batteries and
phones. You will be changing lives, protecting endangered species and helping keep
toxins out of our global water system.
POWER TO THE RECYCLERS!!
