126 NAILPRO OCTOBER 2012 Think Pink W hen one of Marion Pollock’s clients came to her in 2006 and asked her to help support the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Pollock didn’t think twice about saying yes. At the time, Pollock never imagined that four years later she would be facing her own battle against breast cancer and needing a donation to help in her own fight. “I was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer in 2010,” says Pollock, a manicure specialist at Hunter’s Run Salon & Spa in Boynton Beach, Florida. “I went through a lumpectomy, chemo- therapy, radiation, and lost my hair and toenails. The Susan G. Komen for the Cure provided the grant that paid for all of my treatments.” Hunter’s Run is now more involved than ever in its breast cancer aware- ness efforts and participates in benefit dinners, annual walks, game nights and swim tournaments, all to benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. By October 2011, Pollock was in full remis- sion, and she says that October 18 is her new birthday. “I tell anyone I come in contact with that breast cancer has no age or color. My story helps others; whenever I can help someone get help or resources, I do,” says Pollock. Pollock’s story is not a new one, but it serves as a reminder that life is un- predictable. Breast cancer has touched us all in some way, which is why so many get involved and support National Breast Cancer Awareness Month every October. Below is a list of ways you and your salon can help. great way to bring clients

together in support of a

common cause. pick a favorite

breast cancer charity and invite all of

your clients in for pink manicures and

local physician come in

and provide breast self-

exam education and/or

hand out literature.

Walk For a Cure

There are always opportunities to join a walk, like the avon Walk for Breast Cancer, that raises funds for breast cancer research and

awareness. Teams of salon professionals gather around the country to par-

ticipate in these throughout the year. a quick internet search for “charity walks” will return plenty of events

to get you started.
