The place B.-P. dreamt of...In 1922, Baden-Powell visited Switzerland and fell in love with Kandersteg. He felt it was the ideal place to build his dream – a Permanent Mini-Jam-boree where Scouts from around the world could meet all year round.Since 1923, Kandersteg International Scout Cen-tre has been that special place where thousands of Scouts can live their dream. KISC is operated with the support of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement (WOSM).

Run by Scouts, for ScoutsOur Centre is an amazing place and this is thanks to the work of our team of international volunteers that keep B.-P.’s dream alive. More than 11,000 Scouts and Guides visit us every year. Over 100 Scouts and Guides work here to provide our guests with the best possible experience during their stay in the Swiss Alps!

The PinkiesOur Staff are recognisable by the pink T-shirts they wear; this is the reason they are known as “Pinkies”. Running the World Scout Centre, they are renowned as a happy team of hard workers – always ready to help and have fun. The Staff system aims to give its members the best possible experience during their time here. The kind of work they do varies greatly: from hike guiding to cleaning toilets, serving meals to running the laundry or cooking hundreds of burgers to selling T-shirts. All types of skills, especially langu-ages, can prove useful! Our Staff has to “be prepa-red” to work in any area, if and when needed!

Every three months, a group of Scouts and Guides arrive in Kandersteg as strangers. Three months later, the same group leave as friends. Working as a member of the Staff Team at KISC is a unique experience. It is about sharing, learning and having fun! Interested? Keep reading.

organisation& vacancies

The requirements for becoming a member of the Staff Team at KISC are simple:

• Be a Scout or Guide, registered with a National Scout Organisation recognised by WOSM or WAGGGS.• Be at least 18 years old on the day you arrive.• Be able to communicate in English.

Short Term StaffOur Short Term Staff (STS) work as volunteers for one season. It is important for them to be with us for the full three months. Depending on the season, we do look for speci-fic skills. For example, in Winter we need peop-le who can ski or snowboard and in Summer we need people who can climb.Special skills – from maintenance to cooking – are always needed and any other specific skills you have could help the Centre too.STS receive full training at the beginning of their season. During their stay they will perform a wide variety of jobs. All STS receive accommodation in the Chalet, full board and basic amenities. Travel support may be available in some cases, depending on each situation and upon request.During Summer, there are around 30 STS and in the other seasons there are about 10. The seasons begin every December, March, June and September. The STS then arrive to have the time of their lives for the next three months. Each team is unique, but, no matter what the season, they meet lots of people, have lots of fun and make good friends!

Long Term StaffThe Long Term Staff (LTS) are the link between the seasons and the different STS groups. All LTS have specific jobs and are responsible for a certain area of the Centre. During Summer, there are 25-30 LTS, during the rest of the year we have about 15. Some Long Term positions are for four months over the busy summer period, and others are for seve-ral years. For all positions, it is good to have previous expe-rince as STS, while for some, it is essential.

The Staff Team is a combination of Long Term and Short Term Staff and is managed by full-time Operational and General Directors. The Centre is organised into four seasons - Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.
