Why Have We Changed Our

Procurement Policy?

» In 2010/11 English Local Authorities spend

£144 Billion on goods & services

» With resources scarce there is an

increased realisation that local public

procurement can be used as a lever to

tackle economic and social challenges

» This has been recognised in Public

Procurement Policy

What Impact can the

Change Have?

Federation Of Small Businesses Survey

“Every £1 spent by a participating local

authority with local SME’s generates an

additional 63p of benefit for their local

economy, compared to just 40p generated

by large local firms”

Some More Figures!

» Small local firms generate over 58% more

economic benefit for local economies over two

rounds of re-spending than large local firms.

» If Local Authorities increased spend with local

firms by 5% it would increase collective spend

in the local economy by over £1.4 billion

» If spend was increased with local firms by 5%

and with SME’s by 3% it would increase

investment in local SME’s by over £964 billion
