The future of the resume

Opening question: Do you think the resume will be around five years from now?

◦Why or why not?

Page 7: Think IT OMG Group

How to get your resume noticed The average recruiter spends 6 seconds

looking at your resume before deciding ‘yay’ or ‘nay’.

Avoid large blocks of text and use plenty of white space.

Make sure your online profiles are easy to read and review.

Focus on your current and last positions, and make sure it’s clear when you started working at each place, and list a descriptive title for both.

Providing key performance statistics, and results will get your job description section noticed more

Eye-tracking software creates a heatmap of where recruiters look

Discussion Questions From the hiring side: what do you look for in a candidate’s resume?

Why is it difficult to translate that to your own resume?

How do you brand yourself in your resume?

Do you know if your resume shows you as a Jack of all trades?

Do you think you need more than two pages to tell your story on a resume?

How do you represent transitions?

Should you use fonts, bolding, italics, etc.?

Top 5 Do’s and Don’ts of ResumesDon’t! Make one resume and call it a day.

◦ One-size-fits all does not work. A resume is an organic, living document that must be continuously updated. Customize each resume to fit the job you are applying for.

Do! Tie responsibilities into quantifiable results◦ Example “I helped lead a team that implemented SAP that cut overhead

costs by 20%, resulting in a revenue stream for ABC business unit”

Don’t! List all of your 30+ years of experience◦ Limit it to the last 10-15 years. Hiring managers want to know what

you’ve done recently

Do’s and Don’ts (cont.)Do! Make your resume tell a story

◦ Remember, this is your own personal print ad; LinkedIn is your electronic billboard. Make a statement, tell a story, and keep it concise.

Do! Keep your personal brand consistent!◦ Make sure your work history, skills, etc. match on your

social media profiles as well as your resume
