Foster care is a system which enables adults to take care of a child or children that

are not taken care of by their own birth parents. If the parents cannot care for and

provide for their children for any reason, agencies and courts send the children for

foster care.  In most of the cases of foster care, the child or children stay with the

foster family for full length of time but at times it may vary, depending upon the

individual interests. Foster care is different from adoption because the foster careers

are provided a salary to look after the child.

As part of your role, you will need to be able to:

Work closely with the child’s family and those important to the child

Set appropriate boundaries and manage a child’s behavior without resorting to

    physical or inappropriate punishment

Listen and communicate with children in a manner appropriate to their age and

    understanding

Ensure that children are cared for in a home safe from harm and abuse and

advise the children on how to get help when they need to

Help children to develop secure attachments with adults by helping them to

realize that some adults can provide them with safe and effective care

Work with other professionals and contribute to and help to implement a care

plan for the child. This may include specific responsibilities e.g. making sure

the child is able to visit her/his family and friends

Speak up for the child in order to ensure that they receive good care and the

    opportunity to develop

The children needing foster care are as individual as the foster careers providing it.

They come from all sorts of different backgrounds; have very different reasons why

they need foster care and need different types of support and help from their foster

    careers.

For most of the children and young people in care, whatever the reason they need

fostering, what they’re really looking for is support, stability and  normality. They

don’t want to be treated as special cases; they just want to have an ordinary home.
