Vendors set up their booths, and refreshments were being prepared. At 10 AM, the gates opened and all the 2-12 year old kids came pouring in to hunt the 2,500 filled eggs that awaited them. After hunting the eggs, participants enjoyed cookies while browsing the booths and enjoying entertainment pro- vided by the vendors. New Walking Trail Bridge Opens

Thanks to the generosity of local landscaper Adam Ben-

efield, the Crystal Falls walking trail is now easier to man-

age for the little ones. Adam, owner of Eco Irrigation,

generously donated materials and labor to complete a

beautiful wooden bridge over a ravine along the trail.

The walking trail, which connects the 1/3 mile decom-

posed granite loop (just off Raindance in The Highlands)

to Ambush Canyon in The Fairways, creates a beautiful

location for a nature walk close to home. The dirt trail is

very similar to one you would find in a state park, and

winds through meadows and under trees to give resi-

dents an escape into nature. The first portion of the trail

was done entirely with community volunteers headed

by Fairways resident Brian Weaver. A recent addition,

installed by Brett Jones with KOM Productions, increased

the one mile trail by another 1/3 mile, giving residents

the opportunity to view even more natural area and

add some distance to their walk.

The trail has already become a huge success, and

residents are looking forward to meeting their friends for

some exercise in the great outdoors!

Deer Feeders, Soft Soil and Non-Native Species Draw Feral Hogs to Grand MesaOnce again, the Leander area is being frequented by feral hogs. The Texas Agrilife Extension Service estimate there are over 5.3 million feral hogs in Texas alone. Farms, ranches and rural communities have been dealing with the devastation the hogs leave behind for many years, with at least $52 million each year in damages to Texas agriculture. The hogs are located in 99% of Texas counties, and this invasive species exhibits the highest reproductive capability of any hoofed animal, making population reduction difficult. The estimated harvest rate in Texas is only 29%, but up to 66% of the population has to be removed an-nually on a long-term basis to reach a stable population.

Our hogs are likely coming from the 23,000-acre Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge west of Crystal Falls across Nameless Road. Managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), this preserve has been a success in maintaining habitat for endangered birds, but has also been a breeding ground for the hogs.

Feral hogs are usually nocturnal and travel the dry creek beds in search of water and food -- acorns, bulbs, grub worms, eggs, deer corn, even small animals like baby rabbits and fawns. Residents who live on rocky terrain may never have a problem, while those who live along creeks are more likely to experience damage. Part of living in

Feral hogs are attracted to raised beds, berms, grub worms and non-native plants.

the rural Texas Hill Country is learn-ing to live alongside coyotes, deer, turkeys, possums, squirrels, raccoons, fire ants, and the occasional mountain lion (not kidding) – the good along with the bad (see Section 3.57 of the Grand Mesa deed restrictions).

From the beginning, Crystal Falls has had hunters and trappers tasked with killing the hogs, but it is a multi- faceted problem and there is not one solution. The HOA is currently work-ing with the City of Leander and Williamson Co. who have engaged a trapper and he has two corral traps

installed in Grand Mesa. The HOA has also approved smaller traps located on individual property, as long as they are not by the roadway and are checked frequently and the hogs disposed of humanely.

While the fewer hogs the better, the fact is that the hogs and other wildlife will never be eradicated, and for the most part we wouldn’t want to elimi-nate all of the “critters”. However, if you currently feed the deer, remember you are also feeding the hogs – and bringing them to you and your neigh-bor’s house.

Installing a steel picket fence is the most obvious preventive measure.Contact Travis Co. or the Balconies Canyonlands Preserve to demand they take action to prevent the feral hogs from multiplying and flowing into Grand Mesa.

What You Can Do to Help Prevent, Reduce and Deter Feral HogsPlants such as agave, muhly grasses, lantana, Mexican sage, and butterfly weed add color and beauty without attracting the hogs. (See complete list of native Texas Hill Country plants in the Landscape Design Guidelines.)

Most importantly, lawns and beds should be treated with pesticide twice a year to eliminate white grub worms, the hogs most desired food. Other options include not feeding the deer, professional traps and barking dogs.

Architectural Notes

Shed GuidelinesThe architectural committee has had numerous requests for outdoor storage sheds recently. The guidelines dictate that no prebuilt sheds similar to the ones at a local hardware store will suffice.

While there are varying restrictions for different sections, for the most part the following guidelines apply: • the shed must be built on site, on a concrete slab, • it must be of the same materials and colors as the home, • it has the same masonry requirement as the home, and • it must be within the setbacks of the lot.

Since all exterior changes require ACC approval, it is best to submit your plan by completing an “Improvement Request Form” (found on www.CrystalFallsHOA.com by clicking the blue ribbon in the top right corner), along with a survey marking the location, and elevations of all four sides with materials marked.

It is best to include all information possible so that the committee has the data they need to make a decision at first review.

Good Neighbor

Being a Good NeighborIn a few of the Crystal Falls communities, homes tend to be closer together which can create issues relevant to all. The HOA continuously receives calls and emails regarding some of these problems and want to remind residents to be aware of neighbor concerns. Street parking is a frequent complaint received by the HOA office, while speeding is the number one complaint by residents.

Street ParkingResident parking on the street is not permitted, and guest parking is limited to a few hours each week. In most of the deed restrictions, guests should be parked on the street no more than 10 hours in a 36 hour period and no more than three consecutive days each week. Your guests should park in front of your home, and should not block any drive-ways. In Grand Mesa, guests should park in the required off-road spaces on each lot. Resident and guest parking is not permitted in the amenity areas, as they are reserved for resident daily use of the facility. SpeedingPlease remember that it is your neighbor, their child, or a pet that you may be endangering. The time you save is not worth it.

BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR, PICK UP AFTER YOUR PET

The 4th of July is one of the busiest days of the year for veterinarians and animal shelters because of fireworks. Loud noises and burn smells can trigger dogs’ and cats’ nervous systems causing fearful reac-tions, anxiety, disorientation and a flight response which is why many dogs run away on the 4th of July. Preparing ahead of time with the following tips can help alleviate the stress of fireworks and keep your pet safe.

First, never put pets outside during fireworks. Bring outdoor pets inside, or shelter them in a kennel or safe space.

If you are going out to a party consider boarding your pet or ask a friend to pet sit.

Consult with your vet for calming medications or sedatives. Do not wait to start a new medi-cation on the same day as an event. Avoid over the counter medications especially for cats.

Calming alternatives include a ThunderShirt designed to “swaddle” your dog making them feel more secure, and the use of Flower Essences, such as Rescue Remedy which can be added to water. Catnip also can be sprinkled in your cats hiding place or sanctuary room.

A sanctuary room for your pet is highly recommended,

Keeping Pets Safe and Happy on the 4th of Julythe room they feel most safe. Feed and house your pet in the safe room before and after the fireworks, and during parties to avoid doors, crowds and loud noises.

Use a white noise machine or turn on the TV or radio to buffer or drown out the loud noise of fireworks. Play a cat- or dog-entertainment DVD or You Tube video to keep your pet occupied and dis-tracted. Interactive playtime with your pet is also a good distraction.

Always keep pets a safe distance from live fireworks to prevent hearing dam-age and to prevent dogs from fetching lit fireworks or chewing on matches and lighters.

Take a current photo and make sure your pet’s microchip or collar tags are

up-to-date to make it easy to track you and your pet if they run away.

To locate a missing pet or report a wandering or found pet check with neighbors, post an announcement on Next-door.com and contact Texas Humane Heroes.

Fireworks don’t have to be a source of anxiety for pet owners. By following these simple tips, you can ensure that both you and your fur-babies will experience a fun and relaxing 4th of July celebration.
