Things to pack for Trekking and

Camping

Trekking and camping are one of the fastest growing outdoor activities in India, there is nothing

better than walking up a mountain trail amidst spectacular scenery surrounded by everything

natural and ever changing landscape. The kind of thrill and closure you feel is unparalleled.

To enjoy these activities and rush of happy emotions it is very necessary that you carry all essential

items that you may need on this walk with nature and understand what things to pack for camping

and trekking. Often, amateur trekkers tend to forget necessary items and then it becomes a hassle

to provide for them in remote locations. So it is in the best interest of a trekker/camper to pack light

and pack all essentials

Through this blog we help you understand what we mean by essentials, and we will also guide you

to pack light and tight so that you will no longer curse yourself for forgetting that can opener still

lying on your kitchen table when you are in the middle of nowhere with a can of tuna in your hand

A tent is required if you plan to stay the night in the open while on a trek. There are various tents of

different sizes and purpose available in the market, so you choose the best according to your

requirement. Should be the first item on your ‘things to pack for camping list’.

Rucksack/Backpack

You will need a bag to carry everything while walking. A 35-50 lt bag would do just fine (Depends on

how much items you are carrying). The bag should be light weight and the straps should be full of

foam to give maximum comfort while walking. It is also advisable to carry a rucksack rain cover

because you don’t want your items to get drenched in case the weather mafia changes his mind.

Sleeping Mattress

A sleeping mattress helps you stay warm because it prevents our bodies to lose heat to the ground.

Plus it offers comfortable back rest. A foam or a rubber made sleeping mat would work perfectly

well.

Trekking Shoe

Choosing the best trekking shoe is a task, and also a very subjective topic. Generally it is advised to

choose a shoe with a good quality rubber sole with mid sole and ankle support (medium or high

ankle). Should have enough grip and it is all the more comfortable if it is fitted with Gore-Tex

material to keep you dry. A good shoe is one of the main things required for trekking.

P.S This section is not for the ones who love walking bare feet. Thumbs up to such guys

Clothing

It is best to pack just the bare minimums when it comes to clothing, no need to carry the weight of

something that you wouldn’t probably need. So don’t pack your favourite sweatshirt just because

you like it.

By bare minimums we mean:

Socks, cap, gloves, T-shirt, Trek pants/shorts, sunglasses , under garments – For easy or

moderate treks in warm temperatures

Heavy jacket/down Jacket, layers of warm clothing, wind cheater, Woollen socks, woollen

gloves, balaclava/woollen cap, waterproof gloves, thermal wear – For high altitude cold

treks

Rain coat/Poncho, waterproof clothing.

Food (My favourite item out of all ;))

You need this to stay ALIVE!

High energy protein food recommended, like nuts, energy bar, fruits, chocolates, candies, energy

drink sachets (Glucon D/Gatorade) , rehydrated ration (for longer treks), canned meat.

Water is another very essential material, it is advised to carry lots of water or a full hydration pack.

Also always scout for water on the way.

First Aid Kit

Accidents are unavoidable, and trekking is not an easy job, health problems are not rare when you

are in the outdoors. To face such hazards it is necessary to carry certain medicines like:

Anti septic cream

Betadine/Savalon/Dettol

Band aid, cotton, crepe bandage, safety pin, etc

General medicines for headache, vomiting, stomach upset and pain killer

Antibiotics for infections

Anti inflammatory like Moov/Volini

Miscellaneous Items/Trekking accessories

Apart from the ultra essentials marked in the essential checklist for trekking and camping you must

also carry items like the following to make your life easy in the outdoors:

Torch/Headlamp with extra batteries

Sunscreen lotion, Cold cream, towel

Walking sticks/Trekking poles/Ski poles

Toiletries (As per requirement)
