During my journey making this book I made a habit of picking things up as I went

along. This is something I have often done when I see interesting items on the ground

that catch my eye, but I felt like it was particularly important to this project because it

further connects me to this area. Not only through pictures and interviews do I expi-

rience Gallatin Road, but also through objects, or artifacts in this case. Many of the

things I picked up are characteristically East Nashville, like the bluntwrap, while others

surprised even me, like the Octopus playing card. You never know what you will find if

you look down sometimes. The objects show some of the daily routine and ritual of this

street and what kinds of things accumulate along its sidewalks and parking lots.
