April 20134 The View

As we begin April, it is a time to celebrate our residentswho volunteer both within our Sun City Shadow Hillscommunity and in our surrounding cities. April is National Volunteer Month and Sun City Shadow Hillsis blessed with many wonderful residents who volunteerhelping with everything from manning the lifestyle deskto helping set up and clean up after events. Without ourvolunteers many of the things we do would not run assmoothly and we appreciate all that they do. If you don’tcurrently volunteer but are passionate about workingwith people and having fun at the same time, volunteeringin your community may be just the thing for you.Why should you volunteer? Will it take your fun

away? Absolutely not at all. Volunteering really is not agiant, scary responsibility – it is fun. You do not lose allyour free time, since you participate based on a schedulethat works for you. Below are several reasons why volunteering may be beneficial not only to you personally but to Sun City Shadow Hills.• Protect your self-interests. Protect your property valuesand the quality of life in your community by becominginvolved, contributing, and understanding how yourcommunity operates.

• Be sociable. Meet your neighbors, make friends andexchange opinions.

• Give back. It is a wonderful feeling to help others.• Advance your career. If you still enjoy working, buildyour personal resume by including your communityvolunteer service.

• Have some fun. Association work isn’t drudgery. It isfun accomplishing good things with your neighbors.Just ask those who already volunteer.

• Get educated about your Association. Learn how it isdone – we will train you.

• Express yourself. Help with creative projects using thetalents you have.

• Earn recognition. Your contributions will be recognizedand celebrated by other residents. Please join me in expressing sincere thanks to all who

make our community a better place to live. Wewouldn’t be the great community we are withoutour active volunteers. For more information onvolunteering at Sun City Shadow Hills stop bythe Lifestyle Desk. We look forward to seeingmore residents becoming volunteers.Due Process – How Does It Work?Inevitably, from time to time, community rules

are broken. When this happens the associationwill begin a procedure known as due process. Simply stated this means that the association willnotify the homeowner of an alleged violation before taking any action. A letter is sent describingthe alleged violation and the owner is asked tovoluntarily correct the problem by a specific date. This letter will also explain any action the associationmay take if the violation is not corrected. If a violation is not corrected in the allotted time, theowner will be asked to attend a hearing beforethe Covenants Committee of the Board. The association understands that there may be extenuating circumstances and the hearing providesan opportunity for owners and the committee todiscuss the rule violations. After the committeehas had a chance to talk to a homeowner about arule violation, the members of the committee willdiscuss the situation among themselves and cometo a decision as to further action. Compliance isa benefit to everyone in the community and isthe primary goal of the committee. If you have any questions please feel free to

contact the Association staff. We will be glad tohelp you or direct your questions to the properstaff member so that your questions are answeredin a timely manner. The Association office staffis looking forward to assisting you.

Summer MaintenanceAt this time, many of the “winter”

homeowners are leaving for the summer. Ifyou do your own landscape maintenance, please be sure to get someone to do it whileyou are gone. The Design Review Guidelinesstate, “Front yard areas and other yard areasvisible from the golf course and other common areas including streets must bemowed, trimmed, edged, and weeded on aweekly basis.” You wouldn’t want to be finedfor not taking care of your yard.Check out the Sun City Shadow Hills

website at scshca.com. It contains a lot of excellent information. Select CommunityDocuments on the left side of the home pageand then go to Maintenance Documents. At the bottom of that page you will find a document entitled Desert Plant Guide by O’Donnell. After you click on it, six different titles will appear. They are: Plant Descriptions, Monthly Plant IrrigationGuide, Fertilization Guide, Controlling Insect Pests/Disease, Weed Control, andMonthly Gardening Calendar. These articlesshould assist you with any questions you mayhave about landscape maintenance. The irrigation table should help you keep up withthe changing requirement to increase or decrease the amount of water you are applying. There will be a one-page change to the

Design Rules regarding the allowable colorsfor patio covers. After the Board approvesthis change, residents living in Phase III will be able to use darker colors for their patio covers that match the color of their trimor stucco.

IMPORTANT BILLING NOTICEIn order to assure timely posting of

your assessment payment, all assessment payments should be mailed to:

PCM of CaliforniaP.O. Box 51412

Los Angeles, CA 90051-5712The Association office CANNOT accept assessment payments. Please do not mail or deliver payments to the HOA office.

SecurityBY ANDY PERLER

We continue to have a speeding issue here at Sun CityShadow Hills. Even with publicized efforts in The View, constant reminders to drivers to slow down, two Speed Minders, the addition of a radar gun, and moreaggressive writing of citations to violators, we have beenunable to convince everyone to SLOW DOWN. We need your help to reduce speeding in our

community. Remind your friends, neighbors, guests, andeven your vendors to obey our speed limits: 35 mph onSun City Boulevard, 25 mph on all residential streets. Weask all residents to spread the word about the danger created by speeding. Let everyone know that speeding drivers put pedestrians’ lives at risk. Look at how a littleextra speed makes a big impact:

Your Security Committee is committed to continuingour efforts to monitor our streets and enforce speedinglimits. We have recommended several new actions to ourBoard including:• The addition of three new stop signs in Phase 3.• Oversized speed limit signs indicating radar enforcementon Sombra.

• “Slow Down Pedestrian Crossing” signs on Sun CityBoulevard by the Montecito Clubhouse.

• A second radar gun to better track violators.• The possibility of increasing fines for speeding and stopsign violations – especially for multiple violators. Our biggest security issue isn’t crime (we only had one

incident last month – an unlocked vehicle with the keysin it taken from a homeowner’s driveway); it’s speeding.Remember it is EVERY resident’s responsibility to helpus maintain a safe community. Make sure you do your part!

April 2013 The View10

As an active member of the SCSHcommunity, Jim Armstrong can

be found almost daily at the fitnesscenter. His love for the camaraderieis as great as his love of fitness. Thatpassion can be traced back to hisdays in Denver, where he was knownas the Commissioner of the “ABL,”the Armstrong Basketball League. This moniker was given to him bythe group of over 40 men who camereligiously every Sunday morning toplay pick-up basketball games on theArmstrong driveway at their Aurora,Colorado, home, purchased in 1977.Jim’s wife, Stacia, yearned for a formal dining room and he wanteda large flat driveway. Strange as itmay seem, Jim won the day and installed a basketball hoop — a perfect “sanctuary” where he couldbring together friends and colleaguesfrom all walks of his life.

The Sunday ABL players

Basketball greats such as “Fatty”Taylor, Michael Ray Richardson, andT. R. Dunn would play side by sidewith Jim’s friends and, at the end ofday, enjoy a cold beer together in hisgarage. This “Mass of High Hoops”

ritual lasted for 22 years and, although Jim wasn’t the most giftedathlete, he loved the spirit, soul, andfriendship of this group of wannabeMichael Jordans.

Jim was fortunateenough to transitionhis Sunday passioninto a career. In1988, he went fromthe concrete of hisdriveway to a corneroffice as the CFOfor the DenverNuggets of the NBA.At that time, NBAHall of Fame playerAlex English was themarquee player onthe Doug Moe –

coached team. Jim loved workingwith the Nuggets as they becameone of the first NBA teams to haveAfrican American ownership, and hefelt particularly proud to be part ofthe executive team during such a historical period.

Jim was born in 1941 in the sleepytown of Boonville, North Carolina(population 800), not too far fromthe “big” city of Winston-Salem. Inthose dark days racism was allaround him, but he learned at anearly age how to live and cope withit. The teacher contracted to teachblack children in his communitycommuted from Winston-Salem butstayed weekdays at the Armstrongfamily home. At night, the schoolteacher would devote time to teachJim to read and write. Upon graduation from high school in1957, Jim, a skinny 5 feet and 5 ½inches tall and 123 pounds, could attend a “Blacks only” college inNorth Carolina; so he enrolled atNorth Carolina A&T, where hestudied architectural engineering.

After a year of college life, Jim dropped out anddecided to join theAir Force. One of hisfondest memories wasa two-day stopover inSan Francisco on theway to Korea. In 1960he was transferred toCheyenne, Wyoming, and was trained as acomputer operator, maintaining recordsfor 18 missile silos.

Jim was discharged from the military in 1962and was making plans to drive to San Franciscofrom Cheyenne but had an unfortunate car accident. So with hardly any money, a very badlydamaged automobile, and no car insurance (expired six days earlier), he decided to move 100miles away to Denver, Colorado. In 1966, the GI Bill was brought back so

Jim took advantage and attended MetropolitanState College in downtown Denver. On a warmand sunny short-sleeves day, while on his way toclass, he ran into Stacia, whom he had met a yearearlier. One thing led to another and they weremarried in 1968. So what does Jim do? He dropsout of college (again) and starts working for the federally funded Office of Economic Opportunities. Always the one to befriend, hemet an Arthur Andersen external auditor who became his mentor. Encouraged to return toschool, Jim was steered into an accounting program at the University of Denver and securedpart time work for Arthur Andersen. After graduating he worked full time for Arthur

Andersen, being only one of two African Americans working in the Denver office of over300 employees. In 1973 the two left to start theirown CPA firm and, by 1978, an office of 60 became the second largest locally owned firm inthe state of Colorado. After ten years, Jim soldhis interest in the business, went to work for theDenver Nuggets and then, from 1992 to 2004,he worked as an independent consultant.Jim didn’t get to sunny California until Stacia

received a promotion to VP of Distribution forHallmark Channel in 2000. It was in 2006 thatthey moved here to SCSH, and Stacia retired ayear later. Jim and Stacia are most proud of thecareers of their two wonderful children. Danielle

is currently the VP of Sales & Marketing forBrighthouse Network in Bakersfield, and Michaelis the Sr. VP and GM of BET International andParamount Channel (Viacom) in New York City. They are also the proud grandparents of four.

The Armstrong familyJim’s impact in the community that he loves is

as a volunteer member of the SCSH Finance Advisory Committee.Besides hobbies like basketball and cycling,

snow skiing is also a lifelong passion. Jim states,“As an over 70-year-old geezer, I can now ski freeat Snow Summit (near Big Bear)!” Then in 2008Jim started playing golf after taking lessons at theCollege of the Desert. He plays regularly everyTuesday morning in a highly competitive foursomeand recently broke the century mark. He is alsoan exercise addict and loves talking and meetingpeople and, unfortunately, you can’t hide fromthe “Mayor” of the Fitness Center.

SCSH Tennis Club• The Tennis Club promotes tennis within our community and provides men’s, women’s, andmixed organized tennis programs in a variety of formats (e.g. casual play, tournaments, and/or competitive play against other clubs). The clubworks with the HOA to help improve and maintainthe tennis courts and facilities.

• There are two general meetings per year, as ourmembers prefer to spend their time on the tenniscourts. Our club Board plans future events and handles the day-to-day issues of the club.

• The club has approximately 190 members and isgrowing every month.

• Even though we have fewer courts than most othertop tennis communities, our tennis program isamong the most active, friendly, and well organized.During high season, our six high-quality courts areused by tennis programs, teams, and individual players the entire day. This is one SCSH charteredclub where members not only have fun, they alsoget exercise!

• The club is working with the boys and girls tennisteam coaches at Shadow Hills High School. We aredonating money for uniforms and used equipment. We also support the teams with our time and talents:hitting with the teams, attending their matches, etc. What a great way for SCSH to encourage this life-long sport, support our local high school, andgive back to our community!

BY BONNIE TUCKERPHOTOS BY BOB KEIGHER & BONNIE TUCKER

“If we move out here, I just might get a tattoo!”It was an innocent comment, one of those toss-away lines that nobody expects to be taken seriously. When considering relocating from downtown

Chicago to this area, we rented a house in PalmSprings to see if we seriously wanted to live in theCoachella Valley. We drove west on Hwy 111 fromIndio to Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs. Thatentire stretch of 111 is a conglomerate of big-boxstores, UPS offices, grocery stores, home decorators,Hispanic markets, mattress stores, an abundanceof nail salons, fast food restaurants, dubious-looking cocktail lounges, and acres of car lots, small strip malls, tattoo parlors, laundromats, andthe occasional fine dining establishment. In fact, there were so many tattoo parlors near CathedralCity that my husband casually threw out, “If wemove out here, I just might get a tattoo!” Welaughed about it.This was a surprise. He spent his entire life inkless

and unadorned including four years in the MarineCorps. No eagle, globe, and anchor; no MOM ingothic script. Almost 70 years without one singleembellishment. Long story short, we sold thecondo, bought a house in SCSH, moved in,joined clubs, found new friends, and volunteeredboth inside and outside the community. But Inever forgot his remark about the tattoo.Fast forward almost three years. I turned 60 last

November and Bob was 70 in February. Threemonths before his birthday, I suggested that weget matching tattoos, whatever design he wanted. He said he’d think about it. We both thought itwas pretty funny. I raised the issue in early January, and Bob said it was a possibility. By mid-January,time was running out. “What’s the verdict: yes orno?” I wanted to know. Bob said that he’d like toget a heart with the letter ‘B’ in it: ‘B’ for Bonnieand ‘B’ for Bob. Wasn’t that sweet? I agreed. In early February we headed out to a tattoo

parlor we had found on the internet. The place waslarge and very clean, and the artists were personable. The artist first drew our design on the computerand then transferred it to special paper. It’s a heartoutlined in black, filled in with red, with a largeblack calligraphy ‘B’ in the center. We watchedthem prep the needles and prepare the inks.

I was comfortable and confident in the artist’sability. Bob, however, was awfully quiet. I peekedaround the corner to see him gritting his teeth. When he noticed me, he made a face that crackedus up. From then on, he relaxed. Though the

needle can bite, it’s a momentary sting without alasting burn. Thirty minutes later, we were amatched pair. Bob’s tattoo is on his upper arm.My tattoo is on my inner forearm. We paid ournew friends and left.Out in the car, we compared our new “tats,”

realized we weren’t quite ready for the biker bars, and laughed. For one split second, we consideredwhat people would think. Of course, we reallydidn’t care. Besides, the “B” in the middle mighthelp us to remember who we are as we approachdementia. The kids were astonished that their 70-year-old

father and 60-year-old stepmother got matchingtattoos. They texted: “What? R U SERIOUS??”They were all here for the birthday celebration inmid-February and agreed that our tattoos werevery cool. They seemed proud of us for doingwhat we wanted to do. And even though theirtattoos outnumbered ours, what they don’t knowis that we’ve only just started.

E ven though I play golf with theClassy Niners, I have taken for

granted the effort being expendedby so many people to make me thehappy golfer I am with them. Getting myself out of bed to bethere at 7:10 on a Tuesday morningtakes a great effort, but that is nothing compared to what Sue McClure and Debbie Reyna have todo to prepare for 72 of us womengolfers to enjoy the morning.Leadership TeamMost clubs have difficulty gettingpeople to take the presidency, butthe smile on Sue McClure’s facewhen she talks about the job tells methat she and her team have it downso smoothly that they enthusiasticallylook forward to another term for2013-14. In the late summer Sue,Linda Doom (Vice-President), CoryStevens (Treasurer and MembershipChair), and Janet Peper (Secretary)sit down to plan the year. They determine the golf and social eventsthey want and set the plans into

motion to get the year underway. “Ittakes a team of officers that run theoperation without individual egospopping up and a team of volunteersthat willingly take over projects tosupport their leaders with time andcreativity,” Sue says. She and the otherleaders have no problem getting volunteers to help. “When we ask forvolunteers, we are like magnets. Theladies love to participate in this clubbecause it’s so much fun.” Tuesday Morning PlayDebbie Reyna assumes responsibilityfor organizing the players each week. She spends a good 2-3 hours onSunday afternoon and Monday pairing up all the golfers with 3-4women on a hole for shotgun play. The list is randomly developed with“Hat,” a software program; but thenDebbie has to readjust the pairingsfor those who take their own cartsand transfer the information to herown Excel program. The players receive the list on Monday morningand there are usually cancellations

that call for moreadjustments onDebbie’s part. ByMonday eveningthe list goes toRyan and James inthe Pro Shop forthem to preparethe carts at 5:30 onTuesday morning.Debbie is the firstto arrive at 6:30 amto post the list andthen, with clipboardin hand, she checks

each of us in as we arrive. Debbie isalso responsible for providing theGHIN information to the Women’sSouthern California Golf Association(WSCGA) for the members whochoose to maintain a handicap. Shealso trains these members to entertheir information into the computer.Cory Stevens, in addition to her normal duties as Treasurer, is also responsible for collecting the moniesand submitting the payment to theWSCGA for these members.

For Classy Niners, Golf Is SocialThese women golfers place golf as asocial engagement high on their list.Yes, it is primarily a golf club, but itis also a club where three to four social events are scheduled yearly. These events demand a considerableamount of time, work, and the creative production of many volunteers. Bonnie Hilling and MartyPorter took on all three events forthe last couple of years: the HolidayParty, the Spring Fling, and the October Welcome. These two womencould be professional event planners

for they determine the themes, prepare the menus, determine the venue, prepare the decorations, and organize a whole set of volunteers to put itinto action. When I visited with them about theirjobs, I got the impression that it isn’t work at all. These women love working together as they create and implement the themes. Several years ago, the Classy Niners Board

decided they will always serve wine at theseevents; and Linda Doom is thewinemaster who selects and purchases the offerings for theseevents. “She is the BevMo Gal,”says Marty. Linda and Sue McClurealso arrange for prizes for the golfand social events. They have visitedover 100 vendors and acknowledgehow generous the community hasbeen in offering goods and services.Recently the club sponsored theannual tournament with the ladiesat Sun City Palm Desert, and ittook all these women and manyadditional volunteers to assure thatboth the game and the luncheonwent well.Clinics Are ImportantAn additional perk of membershipin Classy Niners is the special

clinics that the club arrangeswith Jon Manack. Diane Phillipsworks with Jon to organizethese lessons during the winterseason. The clinics are so popular that two sessions are required on Saturday mornings.Diane registers the students and collects the money. Shewillingly gives at least two hoursof her time at the clinic eachweek in addition to the severalhours required to organize each

five-week session.Does all this activity tee up a fun club in your

imagination? Feel free to join, even if you’re a beginner, because Classy Niners welcomes all levels of women golfers.

Determined to “Live a Useful Life”

Imagine for a moment that your pleasant everyday lifeis suddenly interrupted: you’re walking home from

work in San Francisco one evening in late December2001, feeling fine and experiencing no symptoms thatcould possibly warn you of what is about to happen. Allof a sudden, you collapse. You don’t know it at the time, but you’re having a grand mal seizure, an episode of abnormal electrical activity throughout the brain thattriggers a loss of consciousness as well as violent, uncontrollable muscle contractions.Rushed to the hospital, you undergo a battery of scans

and tests. And the diagnosis is startling: a cancerous braintumor. Within a few weeks, you undergo a craniotomyin which a neurosurgeon cuts away a portion of yourskull so that he can remove the tumor.A month of radiation treatments follows which robs

you of important motor functions, including your senseof balance, and causes more seizures. Altogether, youspend about five months in the hospital, mostly in criticalcare.Once you’re able to leave the hospital, your difficult

road to rehabilitation begins. But the seizures still continue, and you log a dozen ambulance rides back tothe hospital within the first year after your surgery.

In a nutshell, that is the story ofour neighbor DasMacPhillips, whomoved to SCSHabout a year ago.It was last fall

when I first metDas (a yogi andunordained monkwhose guru gavehim the ancientSanskrit title thatmeans “selflessservant”). I wasattending one ofthe five classes of“integral yoga”that Das teachesin our communityevery week.

In the words of the discipline’s founder, Swami Satchidananda — who attracted worldwide attention asthe opening speaker at the 1969 “Woodstock” music festival – integral yoga “is a flexible combination of specific methods to develop every aspect of the individual:physical, intellectual, and spiritual.”I was impressed by Das’s peaceful manner as he led the

class through eye and breathing exercises designed tocalm the nervous system and still the mind; traditionalasanas (yoga poses) to improve balance, strength, andflexibility; yoga nidra (a form of yogic sleep that promotes deep relaxation and contemplation); and meditation (to develop peace of thought and reducestress). After the 90-minute class, I emerged relaxed yet

energized. And my spirit felt cleansed of the many negative energies that can build within us if we do notrecognize them and then actively discard them.

In class, Das would occasionally mention asmall detail about his personal story. And I beganto wonder: how does this man, who sometimeswalks unsteadily without a cane and whose balance may falter, summon the strength and determination to lead his students to develop “aneaseful body, a peaceful mind, and a useful life”?Understandably, Das relates that he “had a

hard time emotionally at first” accepting his diagnosis and “confronting the loss of bodilystrength and the fear of dying.” Encouragementand support from family and friends were certainly critical to his recovery, Das affirms. But perhaps most of all, it was the practice of

yoga that provided the lynchpin, as Das puts it,“to accept what has been given to me by God. I came to see that I have been offered an opportunity to change my mind and my perspective.”The “eight limbs,” or precepts, of yoga –

similar to the eight-foldpath of Buddhism – formthe framework for livingsuch a harmonious life.To learn more, pleasevisit our community website’s homepage(www.scshca.com) andclick on the link in theleft frame next to thismonth’s magazine. To honor what he calls

“the joy of continuing to serve,” Das focusesfirmly on “growing compassion” to face lifewith “grace, strength, and self-discipline.” Instructing his students,he says, is “the ultimateprivilege for a yogi.”Thankfully, Das has

been seizure-free for nearly 10 years although, about two years ago, a routine check-up foundthat the tumor had returned to his brain,

requiring another surgical intervention. Onceagain, Das is regaining his ability to walk largelywithout support. As encouragement to others who are facing

their own challenges (of any sort), Das stresseshow important it is to “cultivate the friendshipof positive and virtuous people while findingcompassion for those who are unhappy.”And Das reminds us, “Retaining our own

peacefulness within is the one thing that we maybe selfish about.”

Summertime Greens AerificationSimilar to our plan in 2012, we plan to aerify greens

three times this summer: in early June, early July, andlate August. Frequent greens aerification is necessaryto improve turf health. It also reduces moisture retention, which creates firmer greens, minimizes theimpact of ball marks, and provides a smoother andmore consistent surface to putt on.We appreciate your understanding during these

times, and we continue to work to improve the conditions of your course for years to come. For more information, please read the 2012 USGA

Turf Advisory report posted on the member section ofshadowhillsgc.com.

North Course Golf Cart PoliciesThe North Course has been very busy again this

season. If you’re playing the North Course frequently, hopefully you are starting to see an improvement inyour short game! I would like to pass along some pertinent reminders regarding private cart usage andcart fee rates at the North Course:• Private carts must possess a Shadow Hills Golf Club2013 Trail Fee sticker to be used on the NorthCourse. The trail fee sticker can be obtained at theSouth Course Golf Shop. The fee starts at $275 inOctober and is prorated by $25 per month.

• If you are a passenger in someone else’s private carton the North Course, you are still subject to the riding rate unless you have also paid an annual trailfee for your own private cart. If you have paid a trailfee, you should have a trail fee sticker on the back ofyour resident card. If you do not have this sticker, youwill pay a riding rate whether you’re riding in someoneelse’s private cart or a Shadow Hills golf cart.

The Rules of Golf – FAQ on usga.org

Rule 13-4: Raking Bunker after Stroke –

Ball Still in Bunker

Q. A player’s ball is in a bunker (at Point A) thatruns approximately 20 yards along the leftside of the fairway. He plays a stroke and theball advances about 10 yards towards the holeand remains in the bunker (at Point B).

May he rake the bunker at Point A beforeplaying his stroke at Point B?

A. Yes, the player may smooth the bunker atPoint A as doing so would not improve the lieof his ball, his line of play, or his area of intended stance or swing for his next stroke(at Point B) — Exception 2 to Rule 13-4 andDecision 13-4/36.

Hazel Shore – USTPA Certified Tennis Professional

I’m excited about the opportunity to sharewith you everything I’ve learned about the gameover a lifetime of playing and teaching. I startedplaying tennis when I was five, won my first Singles Under-12 title when I was seven, and wasranked among the Top Twenty open players inSouth Africa by the time I was 12. Unfortunatelyinjuries cut short my competitive career by 17,but my dedication and love of the game led meto teaching. As a teaching pro I’ve never met a player who

didn’t want to raise the level of his/her game. That takes work, hard work, and sometimes theknees ache; but, oh, what fun once you become“master of the ball.” My approach to teachingtennis is to first concentrate on good footwork. Why? Well, if you can’t get to the ball and be inbalance when you get there, it doesn’t matterhow elegant your stroke is. What matters is beingin control of the ball…being a master of the ball.I am confident I can make a difference and helpyou raise your game. For Hazel’s teaching schedule as well as

individual and group prices, please contact Hazel at 760-391-2001. For more informationplease come down to the Montecito Fitness Center or give us a call at 760-772-0430.

Best Kept Secret in Sun CityShadow Hills

BY SANDY STANTON

The holiday season has come andgone and so has the fourth annualSCSH Golf Cart Parade. My bet isthat most of you didn’t knowSCSH even had a Golf Cart Parade.

Several of your fellow homeowners would like tochange that. We love the Golf Cart Parade! We thinkyou will, too, once you have taken part, either as a spectator or a participant. As you can see from the pictures, past participants had a ball. We planned andenvisioned what our carts could become, and then wewent to work to make our visions a reality. We hopedthe end results would provide fun and entertainmentfor fellow participants and parade goers. We didn’t disappoint. We delighted viewers from the sidewalks, the Shadows Restaurant, and private patios, and evenprovided photo ops for next year’s Christmas cards.2013’s Golf Cart Parade will be held in conjunction

with the annual tree-lighting ceremony on December 1.We would like to make this event one that is enjoyed bya large contingent of residents. We have several ideas tomake this happen. One of them is this article letting youknow the event will take place so you can get your brainsbuzzing and start planning your cart decor or, if youjust want to be a spectator, mark your calendars and planon making the parade a part of your holiday activities.Look for future articles and announcements

regarding the parade. We hope to have workshops tohelp you with issues such as lighting, music, and tipsfrom those of us who have participated in past parades.Join us; you won’t regret it.

Lifestyle Update April 2013BY EVANGELINE GOMEZLIFESTYLE AND FITNESS DIRECTOR

Spring is here and we are still hopping! April is another month packed full of fantastic events, classes, and trips. We start the month off with a baseball tripto see the World-Series champions, the Giants, play the Dodgers. The following week we’re headed to Anaheim to watch an NHL Hockey game, Oilers vs.Ducks, and then we end the week with a shopping daytrip to Algodones, Mexico. Should you prefer to stay close to home, we have

many exciting things for you to do right here. If you’vebeen spring cleaning and don’t know what to do withyour extra or unused treasures, why not bring them tosell at our Parking Lot Sale? If you are in the mood forsome entertainment, the Community Singers will be performing “Love Songs Forever” with musical selections from the 1920s to the present. Or, if you arein need of a laugh, the comedy show is just the rightthing. We definitely have something to keep everyonebusy or at least entertained.Last but certainly not least, our very important

Volunteer Appreciation Brunch is this month. Asevents go, this one is so near and dear to my heart because, without our volunteers, we could neverachieve the level of service, programming, and satisfaction that we do each and every day. This is the month we honor, value, and cherish not only ourvolunteers at Sun City Shadow Hills but those whogive themselves selflessly and without question to thosein need. Thank you all for who you are!

Thank YouWe may not have told you lately,But hope you know that it is true,

That every single day we are grateful forVolunteers like you!

Your caring deeds, your thoughtful words,They mean so very much,For all you give to others

We can never say “Thank you” enough!

The high-season may be almost over, and someof our seasonal residents may be heading home, but there are still plenty of fun things happeningat Sun City Shadow Hills. One of them will beour “Art & Wine Walk” which will be held onSaturday, April 13, from 2 – 4 pm.What is an “art and wine walk?” A fun event

where fine art is displayed in our sales office andmodel homes, and event-goers can enjoy a glassof wine and snacks in one of our more popularmodels – in this case the Socialite.

And what makes this event even more fun isthat residents will be participating in our event. The artwork will be by our Creative Arts Club –and yes, it will be for sale! – and the wine will bepoured by our Resident Ambassadors. We reallyappreciate the participation of Sun City ShadowHills residents in our event. So bring your friends and come join us on

Opera ClubThe Opera Club meets on the

second Tuesday of each monthat 6 pm. After a brief “opera talk”by expert Joe Cifarelli, we view a filmed opera, complete with subtitles. The April opera is Lucrezia Borgia, by Gaetano

Donizetti, a melodrama in a prologue and twoacts. While not presented as regularly asDonizetti’s more popular operas (e.g., Lucia diLammermoor, L’elisir d’amore, Anna Bolena),several melodic arias from this opera have beenperformed and recorded frequently. The time is early 16th century Italy. Gennaro,

Orsini, and their friends celebrate in a Venetianpalace. Lucrezia, wife of Duke Alfonso of Ferrara, recognizes Gennaro as her illegitimate son froma previous relationship and shows him special attention and affection. When told that she is amember of the notorious and hated Borgia family, and of all the people she has killed, Gennarobecomes angry and defaces her family crest, leaving the obscene ‘Orgia’ (orgy). The Dukethinks Lucrezia is having an affair with Gennaro(not knowing that Gennaro is her son); Lucreziademands death to the person who stained hernoble name (not knowing it was Gennaro); andthere’s plenty of poison to go around! If you love opera, or think you may learn to

love it, why not join us on April 9 and listen tothe glorious Donizetti music?

Readers InkReaders Ink will be reading

David McCullough’s wonderfulbook, The Greater Journey, forthis month’s selection. As he says in his ownwords, “Not all Americans went West.” Thisbook is about 19th century Americans who mi-grated to Paris between 1830 and 1900 and wenton to achieve importance in culture and innova-tion. Nowhere is the story told of the adventur-ous American artists, writers, doctors, politicians, and others who set off for Paris, hungry to learnand excel in their work. Their accents would profoundly alter American history as we know it.Please join with us and share in the stories of

these remarkable men and women. We meet onthe fourth Tuesday of each month.

Retirement ClubOur February 28th meeting

covered the subject of earthquakeinsurance for homeowners. The presentation addressed “To buy, or not to

buy,” the key factors involved in making the decision, financial preparedness in the event of anearthquake, assessing your own risk profile, andalso buying tips. The topic was presented by Tony Steuer, CLU,

LA, CPFFE, Director of Financial Preparedness

for United Policyholders. United Policyholders(UP) is a non-profit organization, a voice and information resource for insurance consumers. Its work is funded by foundations and donations.UP does not accept funding from insurance companies. The club members obtained an unbiased wealth of information to help with theirdecision to acquire coverage.Tony indicated from his research of our area

that we have a significant amount of exposure tothe effects of an earthquake. Living close to afault line can have predictable consequences inthe event of a natural occurrence.Following the presentation, Retirement Club

members Steve Misel and Harry Lubetsky provided information on the formation of theSCSH emergency and earthquake preparednesscommittee. They have been graciously volunteeringtheir time to acquire the knowledge necessary toprovide for the homeowners’ safety in the eventof a disaster.

been really great lately bringing outmany ball players from other softballleagues. Our Wednesday practice now has players fromPalm Springs Senior Softball League, Palm Desert SeniorSoftball League, Sun City Palm Desert Senior SoftballLeague, and of course our own Sun City Shadow Hills

softball team. With the wonderful increase of peoplefrom all over this valley, we may hit-up HOA/Pulte againfor a ball field of our own. Sure would be nice to use ourown field instead of a public park, and it would probablyhelp sales, too.If you are interested in playing or watching slow-pitch

softball, come over to Freedom Park every Wednesdaymorning at 8:30 am.

Table Tennis ClubOnce again the excitement

seems to grow around the tabletennis tables. The InternationalSports Festival held on February 7 and 8 produced a group from Sun City Shadow Hillswho were fresh out of the Newport and Pismorooms. The competition was great as is commonwith John Wilcox and Ron Case locking in forthe Men’s Gold Medal. A big standout as usualwas Rick Sherman, who reeled in the SilverMedal for singles. Women’s Doubles had AnnMotino and Mary Kay Sherman taking home theBronze Medals. Ann Motino held on for theBronze Medal for Women’s Singles. Ron Casebroke loose for the Men’s Bronze Singles. Congratulations to all those that participated inthis year’s International Sports Festival. Hats offto all medal winners for a job well done!Let us not forget our slogan, “The More You

Play the Better You Will Become.” Look for theresults of the Mixed Doubles Tournament heldon March 24 in the May issue of The View.

Tennis ClubThe Sunny Cup is a friendly

That’s Entertainment The Entertainment Club of

Sun City Shadow Hills is blackedout at this time.

Travel ClubMy how time flies! Here it is

springtime already, and theTravel Club’s planned trips will behere before we blink. The Danube River Cruisecurrently has 28 Shadow Hills residents signedup. Remember it takes place beginning July 6.Also give a good thought about visiting Cuba before it really becomes “Americanized.” Thereare two dates for this trip: October 13 and December 8. If you take a flyer from the kiosk atthe Lifestyle desk, please look at the date on top,the itineraries are the same, but the dates differ. Jerry reports that there is strong interest in the

trip to Scotland in July 2014, which can, butdoesn’t have to, include golf. This month’s Travel Club meeting features

Tutta Bella VinoCan you imagine a better way to bid a

fond farewell to our seasonal members(who will soon be heading north to escapeour summer heat) than to enjoy an evening of premiumwines from around the world – and yet pay the samemodest tasting fee? Neither can we, so please join us onApril 27!We’re still working with our wine broker, Ray Croteau,

to find some excellent selections. So we can’t give youthe details right now. But you’ll definitely experience finewines that we normally cannot offer – and you’ll be ableto purchase additional cases of our best-selling winesfrom this season. Throw in live background music to encourage conversation, and the evening is complete! The cost remains $20 per person (which includes a

small plate of food pairings). To attend, complete a registration form (available at the Lifestyle desk or on theclub’s webpage, scshca.com); attach a check made out to“SCSH Tutta Bella Vino;” and drop everything in theclub’s mailbox at the Montecito Clubhouse. The registration deadline is April 20; we cannot accept

Ukulele StrummersFrom time to time people come up to

members of our club and say, “I’d loveto learn to play ukulele but I can’t readmusic,” or “I have arthritis in my wrist (fingers, shoulder),” or “I don’t want to practice every day,” or“I don’t want to cut my nails.” Let’s clear up some misunderstandings. First, you don’t have to know howto read music to learn. Second, there are times that themovement of playing ukulele might be very therapeutic.Third, very often you don’t have to cut those beautifulnails to be able to play. Last, but by no means least, youdon’t have to practice every day (although it doesn’thurt). Some of us actually practice chords during commercials while watching TV. So there really are few reasons not to give it a try. It’s

probably one of the easiest instruments to master. You’ve

heard this before, we can teach you four chords and youcan play over a thousand songs. Singing along and“sometimes” playing are even fun. Come by on Thursdayafternoon between 12:30 – 3 pm and check it out. We’rethere having a blast.

Veterans ClubUnlike many veterans groups, this clubis not about rehashing war experiences. Our club is about assisting members andtheir spouses as well as all our neighbors. Veterans Day in the fall; a highly successful Toys-For-Totsdrive to begin winter; and our Memorial Day flagraisingceremony in the spring – providing recognition to thosewho have served. And finally, we offer an e-newsletter to ourmembers with the latest information concerning veteransand club happenings, making this newsletter a “musthave.”The Veterans Club normally meets on the third
