She refused to speculate on who is responsible for this “gross invasion of my privacy”. Describing herself as a “victim”, she said in a statement released yesterday afternoon that this is being done by unscrupulous persons to embarrass and discredit her. “The distribution and publication of these photos or video is a malicious attack on my personality.” Wong said she had received a lot of support from her supporters , friends and colleagues and members of her constituency and thanked them for their concern, support and encouragement. She appealed to the media to give her and her family members some “breathing space” to allow her to go through this trying time. Wong said she was informed on Friday by The Malay Mail reporters that they have intimate pho- tographs of her and that some people were trying to distribute photos or videos showing her asleep in partial nudity and in intimate posi- tions which she said constitutes a “gross outrage on my modesty and the sanctity of my personal life”. The 37-year-old, who is with Parti Keadilan Rakyat and had been active in human rights advocacy work all her life, said she lodged a police report on Sunday. She said she will continue to carry out her task in serving the people of Selangor faithfully despite what has happened. Both theSun and The Malay Mail car- ried the report yesterday. Petaling Jaya police chief ACP Arjunaidi Mohamed confirmed the as- semblywoman (who he did not name) had lodged the report at 11pm at the Damansara police station on Sunday, adding they will investigate the nature of the complaint before deciding on the next course of action. “We have yet to see the photos and we will only be able to classify the case after finding out how the photos were circulated. We will call all parties who know of these photos,” said Arjunaidi. He said that if the photos were posted online, it will come under the Multimedia Crimes Act and will be handled by the Commercial Crimes Investigations Department. It is learnt that police will record a statement from the journalists of the two dailies and the assemblywoman’s former boyfriend. When asked what were the possible offences committed, Arjunaidi said one is the distribution of nude photos, an offence under Section 292 of the Penal Code which carries a fine and imprison- ment of up to three years or both. He said if such photos are taken with consent, it is not an offence if kept for private viewing. He said pictures captured without the consent of a person is also an offence and action can be taken against the person who took them. Gross invasion of my privacy, says Wong by Maria J. Dass and Giam Say Khoon [email protected] KUALA LUMPUR: Minister in the Prime Min- ister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz yesterday said he sympathised with Selangor executive councillor and Bukit Lanjan assemblywoman Elizabet h Wong over what she is facing, and that “to discredit her in this way is not right”. “I hope she will be able to strengthen her spirits and not be bothered too much by what has happened,” he said when approached at Parliament lobby. Deputy Education Minister and MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said it is immoral to expose the intimate photos of a person and such act must be punished by the law. “We cannot allow such a norm to grow. Since it has become a police case, the authority must investigate the case thor- oughly,” he said adding the matter was no longer political and the culprit must face the consequences. Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of the Public Complaints Bureau T. Murugiah also condemned the distri- bution of the private photographs. “This is a culture that people must avoid as it displays disrespect towards women. How would we feel if anyone were to do this to our daughters, wives , sisters or mothers? In view of an increase in such incidents, I would also like to warn women to be more careful and be cautious about who they entertain and bring into their homes. She has admitted that she was the person in the photos, but she is entitled to make a police report and the police will investigate. You may take naked photos in your home, but you must make sure the public do not get to it.” » Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Is- mail Sabri Yaakob: “I don’t have the details but the assemblywoman has a right to lodge a police report if she feels that her privacy has been abused or violated. This has happened before as in the case of actress Nasha Aziz. But if there is any wrong done on her part then she should uphold integrity and relinquish her post. If not, then she should lodge a police report and let the police take the next course of action. “Some quarters say there are political rea- sons for the disclosure of these pictures but it is not our job to go around taking pictures of naked women. We have work to do for the rakyat and for development.” » Health Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai: “There are two issues here. One is the lifestyle of the assembly- woman and the second the infringement of her privacy. I don’t have the details and don’t know if the pictures are authentic, but if it re- flects a certain lifestyle, it is unbecoming of a leader as we have culture and conventions that we live by. The second is the issue of violation of her privacy. Both are not right and should be avoided.” » Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim: “We are having a party discussion on the status of the incident. I think it would be unfair to make any decision at this time without proper information and it could be construed as one of the ways that somebody is trying to frame the victim. The best we can do is to make it open and we invite the police and authorities to make appropriate investigation.” He said the state executive council meeting on Wednesday will discuss the incident too. » Selangor senior exco and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok said she had nightmares when Wong told her about the incident. She said the people should support the victim. “Although she sounded normal when she told me about the incident, as a political figure, the incident hurts her worse than anyone.” »Wanita MCA national chairman, Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun: “We are outraged by such shameful acts of using women as sexual objects. “We condemn the actions, firstly be- cause the taking of photographs of bodily parts without their consent or knowledge is against the law and punishable under the Penal Code (Act 574). “Secondly , posting of such pornographic materials in the public also constitutes a viola- tion under the same act. “Thirdly, any member of the public who circulates , distributes or passes on such pho- tographs should also be condemned as this is tantamount to propagating pornography, which is also illegal under Malaysian law. “We want the government to conduct awareness campaigns to promote respect for women, women’s human rights as well as non-violation of women. “ Distribution of private photos condemned by politicians, NGO SHAH ALAM: Umno Youth exco member Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir should leave it to the Barisan Nasional top leadership to decide on the candidate contesting the Bukit Selambau state by-election in April, MIC vice-president Datuk S.Veerasingam said yesterday. He said Mukhriz should cease making state- ments (on which BN component party should be represented in the by-election) and instead, adhere to the power-sharing concept practised by the coalition. This, he said, was to ensure a balanced racial composition at state and parliamentary level. “I am sure Mukhriz, and Umno Youth itself, would not want to see MIC candidates devoid of seats at the state assembly and parliamentary levels. I appeal to all Umno Youth exco members to refrain from speculating which party could be represented in the Bukit Selambau by-election.” He said this in response to a statement by Mukhriz in a Malay daily yesterday, which quoted him as saying the time was ripe for Umno repre- sentatives to be given a chance to contest in the Bukit Selambau by-election by looking into the current situation, including the needs of voters in the constituency. Veerasingam said Mukhriz’s statement re- flected “as though Indians will not have seats from BN” to contest in the Bukit Selambau by-election.
