The Smalls Film Festival originally launched in September 2005, with “Small Films for Small Screens”, a two-day showcase and competition in Covent Garden, London. Held in association with London Design Festival and Creative Review, the event was one of the first of its kind to showcase short films on video iPods.

Having seen and liked the way attendees were interacting with the iPods, a senior marketing exec from Apple commissioned The Smalls to do the same in Apple’s flagship store for a week… We loaded iPods with short films and featured The Smalls branding in the Apple store. Apple have continued to support ever since.

After the success of Small Films for Small Screens, our website was conceived, and we started annual competitions such as The Comedy Smalls and The Smalls Showcase and Awards.

Over the years, we’ve seen the most random-yet-successful collaborations come to fruition, witnessed young comedic geniuses being snapped up by broadcasters, observed audiences of hundreds go dead silent when faced with exceptional documentary material, we’ve watched people cry with joy when awarded their first production grants, and we have loved every minute of it!
