ABSTRACT

characterization of the main characters in the ‘Sherlock Holmes’ movie.

Thesis English education program Institute Islamic college (IAIN) of

Tulungagung. Advisor Dr. Susanto, S,S M.Pd.

Keywords: characterization, main characters, movie.

As art creation, drama, novel, poetry, and movie are kinds of literature

forms. It is an element that has a high artwork and imaginative. Some expert have

different opinions about literature, it depends on the time, situation and social

condition, so many differences of definition of literature do not changed the

meaning of literature itself. Literature is said as medium of expressing ideas.

The formulation of the research problems are: 1). How the main characters’

physical appearance are in the ‘’Sherlock Holmes’’ movie? 2). How the main

characters’ personality are in the ‘’Sherlock Holmes’’ movie? 3). How the main

characters’ social status are in the ‘’Sherlock Holmes’’ movie? 4). How the main

characters’ social relationship are in the ‘’Sherlock Holmes’’ movie.

The purpose of this study is to grasp the content of the movie, specifically

it is to description and know: 1). The main characters’ physical appearance in the

‘’Sherlock Holmes’’ movie are. 2). The main characters’ personality in the

‘’Sherlock Holmes’’ movie are. 3). The main characters’ social status in the

‘’Sherlock Holmes’’ movie are. 4). The main characters’ social relationship in the

‘’Sherlock Holmes’’ movie

Research method: 1) The design used in this method is library research by using

structural analytical approach. 2) The data for the research compris all sentences

and dialogues among the character in the movie which are related to the characters’

characterization. 3) The steps to collect the data are: a) watching the movie. b)

Reading script and understanding the ‘’ Sherlock Holmes’’ movie. c) Conducting

identification towards all sentences and dialogues in the movie. d). Choosing the

data dealing with the research problems to get the trustworthiness of data analysis

uses extension observation. 5) The data analysis and interpretation uses structural

analytical approach.

The result is that Sherlock Holmes and John Watson are the main character in

the story, because they are given much contribution of the story. The

characterization is about the main characters’ physical appearance, personality,

social status, and social relationship. 1) the main characters’ physical appearance

The first is Sherlock Holmes, he is a man whose a body is a tall, thin man appearing

no more than in his late thirties, with pale skin and dark, curly hair. His look is

designed to stand out in contrast to John, who is shorter, with straight blonde hair.

Sherlock's outfit consists of a long trench coat, the collar spiked up and a dark blue

scarf. When in casual wear, he looked to prefer dark colored dress shirts and pants.

2) The main characters’ personality, Finding in the Sherlock is someone who does

not have a personality as being a romantic, then behaved to his brother, like to

respect a brother, a brother to obey the command, etc. he was not at all interested

in women, and do not know why, maybe because life is too busy with various jobs.

He was too busy with his work, almost every time he used only to work alone.

Behind the figure of Sherlock that looks hard, But besides that Sherlock has a soft

heart and also lover, especially his friend, John. The second main character is Dr.

John Watson. Watson figure depicted as a doctor who had worked in the British

armed forces. Watson has a little character in contrast to Holmes.3) The main

characters’ social status, Sherlock Holmes have highly educated. He is a consulting

detective. And John Watson is a medical doctor, formerly in the British Army. And

John is a Doctor who is a genius, and related to education Sherlock can no doubt.

4) The last is about social relationship, they have a closed relationship, it is because

they are a hard worker so that the time spent by job only. Even though to his family

they never or sometimes to meet them.

Sebagai karya seni, drama, novel puisi, dan film adalah bentuk-bentuk dari

karya sastra. Ini adalah elemen yang memiliki seni tinggi dan imajinatif.

Sebagimana yang didefinisikan oleh beberapa ahli, bahwa sastra memiliki

pengertian yang sangat luas itu tergantung pada waktu, situasi dan kondisi sosial.

Dari banyaknya perbedaan definisi sastra itu sendiri tidak merubah arti sastra yang

sesungguhnya. Sastra dikatakan sebagai media untuk mengekspresikan ide-ide.

Rumusan masalah dari penelitian ini adalah adalah: 1). Bagaimana

penampilan fisik karakter utama dalam film 'Sherlock Holmes ? 2). Bagaimana

kepribadian karakter utama dalam film 'Sherlock Holmes' ? 3). Bagaimana status

sosial karakter utama dalam film' Sherlock Holmes ? 4). Bagaimana hubungan

sosial karakter utama dalam 'Sherlock Holmes' 'film.

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk memahami isi dari film, mencari

tahu tentang: 1). Bagaimana penampilan fisik karakter utama dalam film ''Sherlock

Holmes'’. 2). Bagaimana kepribadian karakter utama dalam film ‘'Sherlock

Holmes’'. 3). Bagaimana status sosial karakter utama dalam film ‘’Sherlock Holmes

''. 4). Bagaimana hubungan sosial ' karakter utama dalam film ‘’Sherlock Holmes'’.

Metode penelitian: 1) Teknik yang digunakan dalam metode ini adalah studi

pustaka dengan menggunakan pendekatan analitis struktural. 2) Data penelitian

terdiri dari semua kalimat dan dialog antara karakter dalam film yang berkaitan

dengan karakterisasi peran utama. 3) Langkah-langkah untuk mengumpulkan data

adalah: a) menonton film. b) Membaca dan memahami naskah dari '' Sherlock

Holmes ''. c) Melakukan identifikasi terhadap semua kalimat dan dialog dalam film.

d). Memilih data yang berhubungan dengan masalah penelitian untuk mendapatkan

keabsahan dari analisis, peneliti menggunakan perpanjang pengamatan. 5) Analisis

data menggunakan pendekatan analitis struktural.

Hasil dari studi ini adalah bahwa Sherlock Holmes dan John Watson adalah

tokoh utama dalam cerita, karena mereka diberi banyak kontribusi dari cerita.

Karakterisasi adalah tentang penampilan karakter utama tentang fisik, kepribadian,

status sosial, dan hubungan sosial.1) Sherlock Holmes adalah seorang pria yang

memiliki tubuh tinggi kurus, dengan kulit pucat dan gelap, rambut keriting.

Penampilannya berbeda dengan John Watson, yang bentuk tubuh lebih pendek,

dengan rambut pirang lurus. Matanya kadang-kadang terlihat perak dan biru atau

bahkan hijau tergantung pada pencahayaan lampu. Pakaian ikonik Sherlock terdiri

dari jas yang panjang, kerah berduri dan syal biru tua. Karakter utama kedua adalah

Dr John Watson. Watson digambarkan sebagai seorang dokter yang bekerja di

angkatan bersenjata Inggris.. 2) Personalitas kedua karakter. Sherlock adalah

seseorang yang tidak memiliki kepribadian sebagai seorang yang romantis, dan dia

sama sekali tidak tertarik pada wanita, karena hidup nya lebih mementingkan

pekerjaannya. Hampir setiap waktunya hanya ia gunakan untuk bekerja sendiri.

Meskipun dia terlihat seperti orang yang arogan, tapi di balik sosok Sherlock dia

adalah laki-laki yang memiliki hati lembut dan kasih sayang, terutama pada

temannya John. Watson memiliki karakter sedikit berbeda dengan Holmes. Dia

adalah orang yang sedikit pemarah, berpikir sederhana, dan memiliki tujuan hidup

sebagai laki-laki umum yang menikah dan tinggal bersama keluarganya, tidak

seperti Sherlock. 3) Dari segi pandang social statusnya. Sherlock Holmes jelas dia

adalah orang yang memiliki pendidikan tinggi. Dia adalah seorang detektif

konsultan. Dan John Watson adalah seorang dokter medis, Dan John adalah Dokter

yang jenius. Tidak bisa diragukan lagi tentang prestasi yang diraih oleh Sherlock

dan John. 4) Yang terakhir adalah tentang hubungan sosial, karakter utama sangat

memiliki hubungan tertutup mungkin karena sibuk dengan pekerjaan mereka,

sehingga membuat mereka jarang berhubungan dengan orang lain. Seperti halnya

Sherlock, dia memiliki seorang kakak, namun tidak lah baik hubungan mereka

berdua., meskipun mereka punya keluarga tapi mereka jarang bertemu.
