    CHAPTER I

    INTRODUCTION

1.1 The Problem of the Study

Language plays an important life. As long as people live. Language is

always used by all people, although everyone should understand what the use of

language is. Language is a means of communication. Through language we can

communicate with other people and even with other nation. English is one of

international languages. In order to communicate in English well, we should have

English proficiency both in written and spoken. In which express ideas, feelings,

and desires, either in spoken or writer form are espressed. Also language have

close relationship with literature. ecause, without language there is no literature.

Literature has created the great literary works with beautiful language.

Literature also give the entertainment for the readers with literary works about

human life, life lessons and the problems of life. A study on literature is concerned

with literary works such as poetry, drama, prose and others. In literary works,

there are instrinsic elements and ekstrinsic elements. !ne of instrinsic elements istheme.

As a literary device, theme is the central topic or idea explored in a text.

"sually the theme of a work of literature can be stated in one word, such as love

or solitude. A work of literature can, and often does, have more than one theme.

    1

    2/15

The theme is generally not stated explicitly in the text, but instead is expressed

through the characters# actions, words, and thoughts.Theme of any literary work is the base that acts as a foundation for the

entire literary. Theme is an element of a story that binds together various other

essentil elements of a narrative. It is a truth that exhibits universality and stands

true for people all cultures. Theme gives readers better understanding of an insight

into how the world works or how he or she views human life.

$e can identify theme from many sources. !ne of them is from song

lyrics. %ong lyric is the set of words that make up a song, usually consisting of

verses and choruses. The meaning of lyrics can either explicit or implicit. Through

song, the addresser entertaints the listener with the melody and the meaningful

lyric. I use songs lyric as a media for analy&ing about theme because song lyrics

can attract people to study. 'early everyone en(oys music, whether by listening to

it, singing, or playing an instrument. %ong is the daily need for many people in

modern life. Through song, we can add our vocabularies and practice our

pronunciation. It can also improve our mastery of memori&ation.

2.1 ThemeAfter reading a work carefully, with mind and spirit full open to actions,

events, people, places, times, sounds, images, words and patterns, a reader mat

well fell overwhelmed. $hat does it all mean+ $hat is the point+ $hat am I

supposed to get from this+ $hat is the lesson here+ $hat is the author trying tosay+. These 9uestions often come insistently to us, giving us the sense that even

though the work evoked a definite response, something has been left

undiscovered. The theme becomes an answer for all the 9uestions.According to the !xford English :ictionary#s definition, theme is ;the

sub(ect of a piece of writing

  • 8/19/2019 Thesis Mid

    5/15

work#s thematic concept is what readers think the work is about< and it is thematic

statement being what the work says about the sub(ect.According to $ikipedia, theme is a broad idea, message or moral of a

story. The message may be about life, society or human nature. Theme often

explores timeless and universal ideas and are almost implied rather than stated

explicitly. There are many definitions about theme. Theme is the central unifying

element of the story which ties together all of the other elements of fiction such as

plot, character, setting, point of view, etc used by the author was writing. la&e !.

ona&&a, Emil =oy and %andra =oy in their book entitledStudies in Fiction say

that)The theme of a story is the generali&ation about human life that can bedrawn from the outcome of the conflict and from the support provided bytone, attitude, atmosphere, setting and symbolism or allegory */> ) *23

It means that the theme of the story is an idea that can be broadly applied both to

the story itself and to read life situations outside the story. In literary study the consideration of themes relates to meaning,

interpretation, explanation, and significance. Though themes are usually extensive

and complex, separate ideas may be named by a single word.Theme, according to %tanton */?@) 23 and enney */??) >>3 is the

meaning contained by a story. ut there are many meanings conceived and offered by the story the novel3, then the problem is a special meaning which can be

expressed as the theme. The theme is the ideas of common bases that sustains a

work of literature and are contained in the text semantic structure and as regarding

commonality or differences -artoko and =ahmanto, */>?) *0 3. Themes distilled

events, conflicts and situations. Theme of a work is the key to its total meaning or

message. The theme of a story is its underlying idea that the author is presenting.4artin 8ray in his book A Dictionary of Literary Term says that)

Theme is the abstract sub(ect of a workB its central idea or ideas, whichmay or not be explicit or obvious */>0) 2>3.

Theme is the main idea that the writer expresses. Theme can also be

defined as the underlying meaning of the story. Theme is another prime element

of literature, which contains the central idea of all literary forms such as a novel, drama and short story. It reflects innocence, experience, live, death, reality, fate,

madness, sanity, love, society, individual, etc. In literary works, there are usually

many separate ideas. $hen one of the ideas seems to be the ma(or one, it is call

the theme. Cudith A. %tanford says in her book Responding to literature: Stories,

Poems, Plays and Essays Fourth Edition that)Theme is the central idea that you seek as you read a work and think aboutit 221) @13.

%tanton and enney 'urgiyantoro, */?@) D23 have stated that theme is a

meaning of story which especially explains a big part of its elements in the simple

way. It is more or less synonymous the central idea and central purpose.$e can say that a single word as an idea after we build into a sentence.

'eed a sub(ect, predicate and the other supporting parts like in an ordinarysentence. ut we need to know deeper that even though both build on sub(ect and

predicate, an idea is not the same as an ordinary sentence. $e need to recogni&e

the both parts by analy&ing the meaning of the sentence or the idea. $ithout any

consideration to analy&e the sentences, it could be difficult to recogni&e which one

$e can say that a single word as an idea after we build into a sentence. 'eed a

to analy&e the sentences, it could be difficult to recogni&e which one of both.

Ideas are presented along with the expression or implication that certain

conditions and standards should be highly valued. The theme is also a general basic idea that supports a literature, and

implies in the text as semantic structure and connects with the similarities and

differences.=eally challenge to find the theme. ut be careful it is en(oy able in the

other hand, also dangerous. ecause a little mistake will bring the song lyrics

error and the reader can be confuse. %o we can imagine as the real writer of the

song lyrics to make easier us to find the meaning or theme in the songs. To find the theme we must be like a writer of the songs. It is not easy to

find the themeB we must read the whole of the songs. -amalian and arl

*/?D)1 03 said, ;=emember that theme hunting is possibly the most en(oyable,

and rewarding part of novels, but it is also the most dangerous, the most open to

wild error. If you want to find meaning, you must to put yourself in the writer#s

hands and efface part of your self.<

2.1.1 The Ty$e Of Theme*. 4ain theme the theme of ma(or3

The meaning of the basic story idea into a public drama literary

works are not only found in certain parts of the course. It could be said

there is in the whole section. The ma(or theme of a book is the storyline of

    7

the book. The plot, the protagonists and the supporting characters all

together comprise the ma(or theme of any book.. Additional theme the theme of minor3An additional theme that is only found on certain sections. "nlike the

ma(or themes that can cover the whole story. Indeed, there is a whole

range of themes, but in practice very difficult to present a work that

contains only one theme only. 6or example, the theme of the 8odhead. In

it certainly contained another theme, because usually the proses have

multiple themes. The pluralities of themes are usually specified by

separating it into basic and additional theme. ey themes being the overall

idea in the story and using additional themes in order to slip the small

ideas, another is also considered beneficial to the reader.

2.1.2 Theme ,u' t!o'-The functions of a theme is to give input for other structural

elements, such as plot, character, and settingB the most important

functionality in prose that is terminating the last element to be the whole

story. This means that authors create and shape the plot, bringing the

characters to life, whether consciously or not, express or implied, is

essentially a behavior that is guided by the chosen theme and has been

directing it. In addition, the theme also serves the vision. $hat is meant

here is the vision of the total response of the author of the life experience

and linked with the visible. !n the other hand readers get the chance to see

the life experiences of others through thought provoking author of in other

words, the author creates a fictional world that leads us to our own culture

is experiencing the event. All of this can be obtained through the theme, as

long as we can unite the whole element of prose into a unified whole.2.2 So'& )yr!
