The Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+

Samsung’s latest flagship phablets, the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+, went on sale earlier this month. Both handsets sport massive displays and have received strong reviews. The Note 5 offers Samsung’s traditional S-Pen smart stylus, while the S6 Edge+ is the only phablet on the market with a curved display. With their giant screens, these phones could be particularly appealing to potential iPhone 6S Plus buyers.

The Moto X Pure EditionMotorola’s next flagship handset, the Moto X Pure Edition, will make its debut on September 3rd. With a 5.7-inch display, this is another smartphone that’s likely to appeal more to fans of large phones. Notably, the Moto X Pure Edition will not be sold through any major carrier – instead, Motorola plans to sell the device unlocked, directly to consumers. It will retail for $399 – likely several hundred dollars less than the new iPhone.

ZTE Axon Pro and OnePlus Two

The ZTE Axon Pro and OnePlus Two are similar handsets. Like the Moto X Pure Edition, they are being offered to consumers directly. They’re also quite cheap. The OnePlus Two retails for just $329, while the ZTE Axon Pro goes for $449. The OnePlus Two has received widespread praise, but remains relatively difficult to acquire – currently, it’s only being sold through an invite system.

Motorola Droid Turbo 2 and Droid Maxx 2Released last October, the Verizon-exclusive Droid Turbo was a more powerful version of the 2014 Moto X, sporting a higher resolution display, faster processor, and better camera. The Droid Turbo 2 could carry on the tradition, offering Verizon customers a premium Android handset. According to Phandroid, the Droid Turbo 2 will include support for wireless charging and display that may be virtually unbreakable. Verizon could also release a second Droid phone, the Droid Maxx 2, based on the international version of the new Moto X. This handset would carry a lower price tag but offer an enormous battery.

LG G4 Pro

LG released its current flagship, the G4, in June. It’s likely to remain one of the strongest alternatives to Apple’s new iPhone this year. But reports suggest that LG could have another phone planned – a larger, more premium version of the G4. This rumored handset could offer a faster processor, more RAM, and a better camera.

A new Nexus 5 and Nexus 6Google’s next version of Android, Android Marshmallow, will arrive this fall. Since 2010, the release of each major version of Android has coincided with the launch of a new Nexus handset. This year, Google is rumored to be working with both LG and Huawei on two new Nexus phones – a new Nexus 5 and Nexus 6. Nexus handsets have never been big sellers, but Huawei’s debut could prove intriguing. To date, the Chinese handset giant has not significantly participated in the U.S. smartphone market.

A new smartphone from HTC

In June, HTC’s CEO confirmed that the Taiwanese smartphone maker planned to release a new phone in October. Compared to its current flagship, the HTC One M9, the new handset could pack a larger display, different processor, and more RAM.

A different kind of BlackBerry

BlackBerry could be about to do something radical. Since its inception, the Canadian handset maker has relied on its own smartphone operating systems, but that could be about to change. Later this year, BlackBerry is expected to unveil two new handsets – both running Google’s Android operating system. BlackBerry could distinguish its Android handsets with its trademark physical keyboard.

New Mi from Xiaomi

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi could refresh its flagship Mi lineup in the near future. Its current flagship, the Mi 4, was released last August. It’s unlikely that American consumers will have the opportunity to purchase the Mi 5, as Xiaomi does not compete in the U.S., but it should be a major factor in China, an increasingly important market for Apple’s iPhone.
