Introduction to the Teacher Candidates of 2016/17 We have another great group of Teacher Candidates at UBC this year. The future Home Economics Teachers and Chef Instructors introduce themselves below. The group photo was taken at the rooftop garden at the NEST (the new student union building)

Michael Bondy: Hello, my name is Michael Bondy and I am new to Vancouver and UBC. I moved here from Calgary where I lived for 9 years, working in the restaurant industry and travelling whenever I had the chance. I went to SAIT for the professional cooking program and had the opportunity to work as a teacher's assistant part time for one of my chefs. I was able to travel to Cuba with the SAIT gardening club to learn more about organic farming. In Calgary I was also involved with Farm to Fork, Slow Food Calgary and worked with local purveyors. I have

always had a passion for food and look forward to continue learning and starting a new chapter in my career. Angela Chen: My name is Angela Chen, and I’m one of the candidates in this year’s BEd program at UBC. My passion for home economics stemmed from when I took the class myself back in high school. I had always loved to cook and sew little projects but being in a formal setting around such knowledgeable teachers helped to further spark my interest. For a while I thought I wanted

Page 13: THESA newsletter fall 2016 (3) · October, 2016 Article 6 – Organizational Structure 5. The executive officers shall appoint a nominations committee. The duty of this committee

13

to become a dietitian, so much so that I pursued a Bachelor of Science in Food, Nutrition and Health at UBC. However, during my undergrad my interest slowly went in another direction. I had started working at summer camps and volunteering with the Learning Buddies Network, tutoring elementary school children with reading difficulties. Teaching had always been something I was curious about but seeing how I could positively affect these children’s lives was such an incredible experience. I realized that this was something that I wanted to do as a career, so when I finished my degree I decided to follow my passion of food, cooking and teaching and applied for the home economics program. I am so excited for what’s to come and cannot wait to be a part of this group of inspiring professionals. Matthew Cooke: Hello THESA colleagues! My name is Matt Cooke. I am very excited to enter the teaching profession. I recently graduated from UBC with a BSc. in Food, Nutrition & Health, and am a current teacher candidate in Home Economics - I have a passion for food and a desire to work in a high school teaching kitchen to transform how youth connect to their food and the world. Before my studies at UBC I spent years working as a chef, attending culinary school and obtaining my Red Seal Certification. I have always loved teaching kids and teens. I started coaching in my senior year of high school, where I was the head coach of the girls’ soccer team. I hold a Provincial 'B' coaching certification from the BC Soccer Association. I was the head coach for the girls, and assistant coach for the boys, soccer teams for the following 4 years. Coaching was the spark that started my love of teaching. In the following years I spent time volunteering and working with an amazing program called Project CHEF. It is an experiential, curriculum-based school program aimed at children in kindergarten to grade seven that teaches students about healthy food: where it comes from, what it tastes like, how to prepare it and how to enjoy sharing it

around a table. Barb Finley, the founder of Project Chef, inspired me to dive back into university studies to become a teacher. Since then, I have been trying to combine and practice my passions. I help run two collaborative community gardens in the Vancouver - The Collaborative Garden at Creekside and the James Garden and Social Community. Both of these projects have taught me so much. Community gardens have the potential to foster a sense of belonging and community, as well as the benefits of teaching the importance of food security, food literacy, food systems, and the environment. I look forward to meeting and collaborating with you all! Megan Jolicoeur: My name is Megan Jolicoeur and I graduated from UBC with a degree in Sociology and Family Studies. Some interests I love are camping, hiking, scuba diving, cooking and travelling. Recently I back packed in the Philippines for a month and enjoyed a cultural experience I will never forget! Throughout my high school education, I was very fortunate to have incredible and encouraging Home Economic teachers. They inspired me and I quickly realized I too desired to be an educator as well. I have a passion and eagerness to work with and teach children and I am determined to be the best I can be in my chosen career. I am extremely excited and thankful to be in the Home Ec BEd program. I look forward to learning, exploring, and the many experiences that I will endure in this course over the next year. This will be an unforgettable journey to help me reach my goal of becoming a motivating and inspiring teacher. Anna Kuang: Hello! My name is Anna Kuang. I’m very excited to be a part of this year’s Home Economics cohort at UBC. I would like to share a bit about myself, and why I want to teach Home Economics. All through secondary school I gravitated towards the Foods and Textiles courses. It was the practical skills and knowledge that I learned from these classes I valued the

Page 14: THESA newsletter fall 2016 (3) · October, 2016 Article 6 – Organizational Structure 5. The executive officers shall appoint a nominations committee. The duty of this committee

14

most, and they ultimately influenced my decision to pursue a major in Food, Nutrition and Health at UBC. During my undergraduate studies I developed a passion for empowering youth through a leadership program I volunteered with and still continue volunteering for to this day. The time I spent with these youth helped me realize how much I enjoyed seeing them grow as individuals and it gave purpose to life to be able to provide direction and impart knowledge on the next generation. As a result of this, I wanted to become a teacher and continue my engagement with youth. I strongly believe Home Economics has an important role in our educational system. Students are able to learn content that is relevant to their present lives that will remain valuable throughout their life. I hope to be able to encourage interest in this subject as a future teacher. In addition, I am a cat lover, a food enthusiast and have a love for crafting, especially shadow boxes. I look forward to meeting many of you at the THESA Conference! Tina Li: My name is Tina and I am currently a teacher candidate in Home Economics. I was born and raised in Vancouver. After graduating high school I went on to study Food, Nutrition and Health at UBC. During the second year of my degree, the opportunity to obtain a dual degree in Food, Nutrition and Health and Education arose and I immediately applied. I saw the Education degree, specifically the Home Ec faction a chance to combine my enthusiasm for nutrition with my hope to empower students. Currently I am completing the last year of my degree and am overwhelmingly excited about my short and long practicum. In my spare time when I’m not reading articles or completing assignments, I enjoy being outdoors. I recently completed my first triathlon and am hoping to start training for a full marathon soon. Additionally, I find pleasure in hiking and being amongst the wilderness. When the skies are clear you can often find me staring up in space where I am counting stars and

my blessings. Furthermore, I am a fan of the horror genre. Although I often find myself awake at night due to fear, I still take pleasure in experiencing horror through movies, stories and even houses. I wish to share my interests and develop new lasting relationships based on appreciation of others. Gelaina Mah: My name is Gelaina Mah. I graduated from UBC with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Sociology and minoring in Family Studies. I hope to pursue a teaching career in the Vancouver school district. I have a passion for both cooking and sewing, and through my undergrad at UBC I developed a growing interest for family studies. I have wanted to become a teacher since I was in kindergarten and have wanted to become a Home Economics teacher since my first Foods class when I was in Grade 9. I am excited to start my career as a teacher and thrilled to enter the Home Economics community. Simina Mattoo: My name is Simina Mattoo and I am thrilled that I have the opportunity to attend this year’s THESA conference. I am a recent graduate of the University of the Fraser Valley, and I completed a Bachelor of General Studies with a minor in Sociology. Unfortunately, what doesn’t appear on my degree is my completion of the very intense two-year Fashion Design program which essentially is the reason that I became interested in the option of becoming a Home Economics teacher. The program opened my eyes to the many various aspects and careers in the Fashion Industry and I was absolutely thrilled when I found out that Home Economics teaching was a possibility. I had always known that I wanted to teach, however I was very conflicted about which subject area I would teach until I discovered my love for sewing. I love to turn a piece of fabric into a wearable garment or an accessory, and I feel as though my passion for creating an array of garments and objects will translate very well in any Home Economics class.

Page 15: THESA newsletter fall 2016 (3) · October, 2016 Article 6 – Organizational Structure 5. The executive officers shall appoint a nominations committee. The duty of this committee

Although many people cite Home Economics as a ‘dying’ subject, I believe that the upsurge of interest in fashion as well as accessories in this generation will spark a new interest amongst students, especially once they see and become aware that they can be the creators of a product rather than the consumers. I hope to inspire awareness amongst a student body of their creative abilities, and I am certain that teaching Home Economics is the perfect place to start. Emily McIntyre: Hi! My name is Emily, I am a graduate of UBC with a Bachelor of Science in Food Nutrition and Health, and I am currently pursuing my Bachelor of Science specializing in Home Economics. I have always had a passion for working with youth and children. Coming to UBC I discovered my love of food and nutrition education. After leading cooking programs with the Vancouver School Boards CST and working at the Healthy Eaters and Leaders summer camp, I realized I wanted to go into teaching. I am so excited and honoured to be in this program and to begin my journey as a teacher. Aside from school, I love being outdoors, hiking, running, baking, playing my guitar, and drinking lots of coffee!

Victoria Mejia : My name is Victoria Mejia and I am extremely excited to be in the Home Economics Education Program! I graduated from UBC with a BSc in Food Nutrition and Health and jumped right into the health food product industry. After spending some time working with health food products, I attended the Institute of Holistic Nutrition and became a Certified Holistic Nutrition Practitioner. When I started my own nutrition practice, I quickly realized that there was a disconnect between knowledge and application of nutrition. Many of my clients were missing the basic skills of cooking and preparing food. After discovering this, I started a meal planning and preparation service for families. Though this was a successful program, I couldn’t help but think that there

must be a better way to make a difference earlier on in the education system. That is when I looked into becoming a Home Economics teacher. After making a few phone calls and emails, I was very fortunate in connecting with some amazing Home Economics teachers who allowed me to shadow and volunteer in their classrooms. It was during this experience that I saw the extreme value that this program has to offer its students and was driven to become a part of it. I hope to bring my passion and knowledge in food and nutrition to the Home Economics program and to create a class atmosphere that both motivates and inspires each individual.

Hailey Shand: My name is Hailey Shand and I am from Chilliwack, British Columbia. I graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Food, Nutrition, and Health from UBC in May 2016. I am passionate about food and nutrition, but outside of that I love photography and hiking! I want to teach home economics so that I can educate students on how crucial proper nutrition and the ability to feed oneself is, and how these skills can better their lives in so many ways. Kathy Wong: My name is Kathy and I graduated from UBC nutrition. I'm from Calgary but I'm planning to work and settle down in Vancouver after graduating from Education. There are numerous reason in why I want to be a home economics teacher but the primarily reason is doing what I love for my career. I always have a passion for cooking and baking ever since I was in high school. As I transitioned into UBC, I would always bake and cook with my roommates when I finish class. As I near the end of my undergraduate years, I realize that what I want to do is not the chemistry and other science courses I studied in school, but rather my hobby. So I ended up choosing education in my last year as an undergraduate, so I can become a home economics teacher!
