One of the greatest
challenges facing education
institutions today is the
need to develop highly
educated and versatile
students who will thrive in
the 21st century digitaleconomy.
Globalisation, changing demographics
and technological advancements are
some of the key driving forces
creating tectonic and disruptive
paradigm shifts. Today’s students will
have to be prepared to face a fast-
pace and ever-changing environmentand seize the opportunities brought
about by these forces. The knowledge
and competencies that have become
increasingly important in the 21st
century underpin a reconsideration of
the holistic education philosophy.
The holistic approach to
education is one that putsemphasis on preparing
students for lifelong
learning in which the
educational focus moves
towards the life skills,
attitudes and personal
awareness that the studentwill need in an increasingly
complex world.
The commitment to the subject
knowledge is maintained but is
complemented by learning how to
learn, the critical evaluation of
knowledge and the use of this
knowledge in a broad range of
contexts; it is these that represent the
education currency of the future.
Holistic education is on top
of many nations’ education
agenda, including Malaysia.
In reference to the recently
published Malaysia
Education Blueprint 2015 –
2025, the MalaysianMinistry of Education have
prioritized the development
of “Holistic, Entrepreneuria
and Balanced Graduates”
as one of nine key
initiatives.
They envision developing well-
rounded graduates with both
character and knowledge by elevatin
values-driven, entrepreneurial
learning. This will be done through a
enhanced curriculum, expanded
industry collaboration and
experiential learning programmes, as
well as a new integrated assessment
that looks at the holistic developmenof graduates.
