Reference Projects

EnergyThe time has come againto remember its importanceMost of us up until very recently would never think of the energy we are using. However, we all can see that our “carelessness” has a heavy cost on our planet, our environment, the life of the future generations and our money!

Of course it is not the fi rst time humanity undergoes an “energy crisis”. In ancient Greece they also had a problem. Until 500 BC the population growth meant that most forests had disap-peared as a result of their use as fuel for heating. The solution was to turn to the sun and wind... Excavations have shown that houses and complete cities were built with Southern orientation. Suitable openings on the buildings permitted the entrance of the solar heat in the winter and the cool breezes in the summer. (The bioclimatic architecture that is so in fashion these days)

During the 1st century AD, Heron the Alexandrian (Greek mathematician and engineer living in Alexandria) describes one of his inventions, a musical organ which uses the wind to rotate a wheel with wings to produce music. It is the fi rst time in world history that a wind mill is men-tioned.

After the decline of the Roman & Greek civilizations the knowledge and use of the sun, glass, and other advanced techniques stopped for many centuries. Windmills would appear in Greece again after many centuries and have been used up until recently for grinding grains.

In the end of the 19th century an American inventor, Clarence M. Kemp, in 1891 receives the patent for the fi rst solar water heater, a black box with glass on one side. Until the 1920s the use of solar heaters on Southern states became very popular. There were many manufacturers and in Florida and other states up to 80% of new homes came equipped with a solar water heater. However, the discovery of huge natural gas reserves on 1920 in California leads to their gradual replacement with gas heaters. The Gas Company provided them for free… The government policies, guided by the oil & gas industry, drove the solar market in the USA to a complete ex-tinction. Even now the use of solar heaters in the country that invented them is practically zero.

We are currently living a new type of energy crisis. It has to do not only with “high demand, short supply” of fuel… but also the realization that we have already caused extensive damage to our planet and the results are not longer theories of weird “green” scientists. We can see them all around us.

The use and development of technologies that are not so damaging to the environment can be the only way forward. We must stop polluting “our house” because we are too many and there is no exit door!

Even those who are indifferent to environmental issues can be sure that the cost of energy will continue to grow since fossil fuels are decreasing and consumption is increasing due to the developing countries. So, indifference and use of “cheap” solutions already costs dearly!

Additionally, for us in Theros, it is very moving to see a technological system (solar thermal, photovoltaic panels, etc.) “harvest” the free energy that nature provides all around us. The way these systems interact with the sun, wind, etc. is a continuous reminder of their importance.
