July / August 2013 Creating Community Through People, Parks and Programs So Many Things To Do It sure is hot outside, but we will not stop planning sizzling hot activities for you! In July, I'm looking forward to the Hot Diggity Dog Luncheon with grilled hot dogs and lots of topping choices! Springdale's Gone Wild is a nice family event planned for the end of July and the Neighborhood Yard Sale is planned for August. Don't forget, on the day of the yard sale there will be a shredding station in our parking lot that will shred your personal documents for free! So don't let the temperatures outside keep you from enjoying our sizzling hot activities at the Community Center. Come on in and enjoy the fun! There's a New Guy in Town! I’d like to introduce the newest member of the Parks and Recreation staff, Charlie Wilson. Charlie started in the newly created full-time position of Recreation Programmer on June 3. His primary responsibility will be youth and adult sports along with programs for pre-school through high school and special events. Charlie graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation Studies and a minor in Business. He has enjoyed success while serving with the Athens Arts, Parks and Recreation Department, and most recently as the Program Director for the Marietta YMCA. I’m confident his enthusiasm and commitment will be obvious in the programming he oversees. The next time you visit the Community Center, ask Donna to introduce you to Charlie and welcome him to the Department! Sharon Thursday, July 25 7:00 p.m. What’s in that garden out back besides flowers and vegetables? There might be a little toad hopping around or a turtle resting in the sun chewing on a green leaf. How about a red tail hawk circling above, or a cockroach crawling around the roses. See and hear all about these and other visitors in your garden Presented by a Hamilton County Parks Naturalist.

Health & WellnessWords from a Fitness GuruWhether it’s a walk in the park or a dip in the pool, the great outdoors can be a breath of fresh air for your exercise routine. But the summer’s heat could turn your workout into a burnout. Here are some precautions everyone should take when the thermostat is on the rise.Acclimate yourself to the temperature. The average person can take 1-2 weeks to adapt to warmer, more humid weather. Avoid exercising during the sun’s peak hours. Move your workouts to the coolest times of the day and look for shaded places to exercise to help keep your temperature down.Stay inside when the humidity, smog or UV index are up. High humidity will make it difficult for sweat to evaporate. Smog can lead to breathing difficulties and the higher the UV index, the more intense the sun will be.Your clothing choice can greatly affect your comfort level while exercising outside. Wear loose-fitting clothing that is light-colored and made from moisture-wicking fabric. Protect yourself from the sun. Apply an SPF 30 sunscreen at least 30 minutes before exercise and reapply every 2 hours. Protect your eyes with sunglasses that block UV rays. Before, during, and after your workout, be sure you are properly hydrated. You can lose up to a quart of water an hour during exercise. Take frequent breaks to rest and rehydrate to replace those liquids. Remember to warm-up and cool-down, even during the hot summer months. Some medications such as diuretics and stimulants can increase your risk of heat injury. Always check with your doctor before starting or changing any exercise program. If it’s too hot, move your workout to the cool waters of the pool or air-conditioned indoors. Swimming is a great exercise and even doggy paddling can be a good aerobic exercise. Use these tips to beat the heat and if you ever have any questions come see your Fitness Center Team.
