Brass Quintet Ensemble The “Roma Brass Quintet” was founded in 1999 by a group of pres5gious musicians from
various orchestras and ins5tu5ons (Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, RAI Symphony Orchestra, Conservatory, Banda Nazionale dell’Arma dei Carabinieri). The intense ac5vity of the RBQ includes the opening concert of the Venice Architecture Biennale, the collabora5on with M. Luciano Berio for the performance of “Call”, the concert tour in Iran at the State Theater in Tehran (2002), the inaugura5on of the concert seasons of Pauline Chapel at the Quirinale broadcasted in Europe by RADIOTRE and the inaugura5on of the Paul Klee exhibi5on in Rome – at Complesso del ViZoriano.
The RBQ has consistently aZracted the interest of the interna5onal press for the choice of programs that transcend the ordinary “concert program” to become, through spoken introduc5ons and gags, a show where the music, always protagonist, is made even more enjoyable. Music that is concise, an5-‐rhetorical, fun, “great and small” at the same 5me ... just like the RBQ. In fact, this ensemble is small, prac5cal and func5onal, but with a great repertoire: special transcrip5ons lead the audience from Opera to Musical, from soundtracks to Cartoons, without forge_ng the tradi5onal “classics”: from Monteverdi (with original instruments) to Gabrieli, Palestrina and Bach. Original pieces of the Nineteenth century (Maurer, Ewald), music of the soloists of John Philip Sousa band, Gershwin, jazz and contemporary music complement the many possibili5es of this ensemble.
The brass quintet ensemble course is free to all students enrolled in a course of trumpet, trombone, horn and tuba.

Program
With the Narnia Fes2val and Interna2onal Summer Training Program, the Narnia Arts Academy presents an innova5ve vision of the concept of “summer course” by offering an academic program which allows students to improve their musicianship and learn about many other fundamental aspects of music making which are not usually taught in school, such as:
•How to organize a career without a manager •The importance of communica5on •Performing in front of audiences •The advantage of a healthy posture •How to develop a persuasive and powerful stage presence •Techniques to overcome performance anxiety and more.
Ample 5me will be dedicated to chamber music in various ensemble formats.
For singers, par5cular focus will center on the fundamentals of dic5on and phone5cs of the Italian language, as well as on ac5ng and movement techniques.
Dancers will have a dedicated space with the requisite equipment.
Considering how difficult it is for young ar5sts to find opportuni5es to perform in public, the Narnia Arts Academy offers all students the chance to par5cipate in the Narnia Fes2val (July 8th – 21st) with concerts and shows held in pres5gious venues in Narni. Those preparing interna5onal compe55ons are given priority and will be offered a special solo recital.
During the three-‐week program, students will have many chances to try out their improved skills while being fully immersed in the magic atmosphere of one of the most beau5ful medieval Italian ci5es.
Weekly excursions will connect the students to the vast culture and history of Italy, offering them the same inspira5on and inner enrichment that for centuries have influenced the greatest ar5sts.
Each student of the INTERNATIONAL SUMMER TRAINING PROGRAM will receive:
• private lessons • chamber music classes • orchestra classes (symphonic and opera repertoire) • master classes* • lectures* • workshops* • concerts • guided tours.
Upon request: • Italian language classes • English language classes
*The master classes, lectures and workshops program will cover the following topics:
Crea2ve and effec2ve musical performance How to improve your skills in presenta5on, prepara5on and communica5on, how to acquire a strong stage presence and overcome performance anxiety.
Music business How to start your career on your own, manage a well-‐organized business and be a successful ar5st. How to prepare for fes5vals and compe55ons, and plan crea5ve recitals.
Pedagogy Method and prac5ce of teaching.
Developing composi2on skills From finding a theme, to final comple5on of the composi5on, it will be a fun “building” adventure, easy to understand. This approach also helps students analyze music they are studying.
Developing lyrical and virtuosic playing The complete musician is one who can balance the nuance needed to perform lyrical pieces with the virtuosity required to play “showstoppers.” Learn techniques—coupled with appropriate repertoire—to effec5vely develop both of these aspects in performances.
Improving your improvisa2on skills From the inside out, students can easily become proficient in transposi5on, harmoniza5on, improvisa5on and vocaliza5on. Where does one start? How can the student develop playing by ear? This workshop leads you through simple and thorough approaches to developing improvisa5on skills.
Ac2ng for singers Unique ‘theatre-‐centric’ training program for musical performers. Learn to break down the barriers of interpreta5on through the use of drama. The workshop will focus on facial and spoken interpreta5on of the text, with the addi5on of physical movement.
Collabora2ve skills: Playing well with others A discussion of the significant pedagogical benefits to young musicians from exposure to and explora5on of the vast repertoire of chamber music. Ensemble playing, working with singers and instrumentalists: we focus on cul5va5ng musicianship.
Using the whole body when playing an instrument Go beyond concentra5ng on the fingers to explore how to make use of the en5re body when playing an instrument, resul5ng in a healthy technique suitable to the en5re range of music repertoire. Pianos: from touch to tone, discover secrets about your piano Learn why some pianos “feel” so natural to play, why tone changes, how dampers and pedals interact. This is an opportunity to ask ques5ons and get answers – a hands on class that will help you understand more about the rela5onship between touch, tone and piano technique -‐ about caring for and improving your own instrument.
Understanding repe22ve strain disorders in the music industry Repe55ve strain disorders have increased by 200% since 1996. Join a famous chiropractor as he explains these injuries and why they affect musicians. He will discuss preventa5ve measures as well as treatment op5ons.

It’s a typical Umbrian town, built on a hill 790 feet above sea level with 20.570 inhabitants and strong medieval traces. The town has outstanding views over the river Nera valley and the wide plane of Terni. Narni offers ar5s5c, archaeological and religious i5neraries, plus an abundance of natural history for the tourist. The town’s theater dates back to 1800.
It is surrounded by cultural gems, including the renowned ci5es of Perugia, Assisi, Todi, Spoleto.
Narni
Historical Informa5on Although Neolithic people lived in this region, the first historical document men5oning the town is dated 600 B.C.
Narni was a Roman colony under the name of Narnia, a name that comes from the Nar River, which today is called the Nera.
In 233 B.C., with the construc5on of the via Flaminia from Rome to Rimini on the Adria5c coast, Narni became of major importance and it was heavily for5fied because the road passed through the town.
In 90 B.C., Narnia became a municipally (semi independent) town within the Roman Empire. The first Chris5an Bishop of Narni, Giovenale from Cartage, was chosen in 368 A.D. and later was consecrated as Patron Saint of the town.
Narni’s strategic posi5on, standing as it does above the deep gorge of the river Nera, has made it a target of many invading and barbarian forces.
In the 11th Century it established its power as a free “Comune” (autonomous town). Between the 12th and the 14th century it reached its greatest splendor. In 1371, the Pope Reformed the Statutes of the city and Narni became part of the Papal State. Narni developed a school of pain5ng and goldsmithing. Many ar5sts of the renaissance period produced work for clients and patrons in Narni: Rosellino, Ghirlandaio, Gozzoli, VecchieZa, Antoniazzo, Romano and Spagna.
On the 17th of July 1527 the Lanzichenecchi (northern mercenaries) stopped on their way back from the sacking of Rome and destroyed Narni.
Slowly the walls, buildings and churches were rebuilt and by the end of the century, Narni had been re-‐established. Aqer the rebuilding, many important ar5sts returned to Narni, including Vignola and Zuccari. Also Sangallo and Scalza, who took part in the reconstruc5on of the town. In 1664 the town library was founded. Many famous people were born in Narni, including: the emperor M.C. Nerva, GaZamelata, the Beata Lucia, Bernardo, Eroli, GaleoZo Marzio and S. Cassio.
