Dear Parishioners, Greetings of Grace and Peace! As you know, the Holy Father Pope Francis has recently published an encyclical letter dated

October 4, 2020 entitled ‘Fratelli Tutti’ on brotherhood/sisterhood and social friendships inspired by the words of his namesake, St. Francis of Assisi. He stressed the value of social relationships, not only in our own little circles but more importantly, humanity, as a whole. We are all related and connected to each other. He reflected extensively on the parable of the Good Samaritan and explained in great detail on the question, who is my neighbor? We are not simply neighbors. We are brothers and sisters in Christ. If we treat each person with kindness and benevolence, we will create a better world, a decent society. For some who may struggle with reading a document from the Holy Father, I tell you, it is readable and entertaining. I highly encourage you to read it.

In anticipation of the Feast of St. Luke, the Evangelist and patron saint of one of our parishes,

we’ve had a novena which coincided with the daily recitation of the rosary. Since the feast falls this Sunday, October 18, we will celebrate in spirit and in truth as our patron saint is our icon.

RCIA. Please help us spread the word about the RCIA (RITE for the CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF

ADULTS) program for those who are seeking and eager to learn about Catholicism, baptized Christians wishing to join the Catholic Church and adults who have yet to complete the Sacraments of Initiation (First Communion and/or adult Confirmation) or even for those seeking a deeper level of Catholic faith.

I want to thank Fr. Ramonito ‘Mon’ Celestial, associate pastor of St. Andrew Parish, our very

own retired priest, Fr. Arnold Noriega, and Fr. Armando Espinosa (visiting) for helping us cover Sunday Masses at a time when Fr. Marco Basulto is on vacation and celebrated his 20th Priesthood Ordination Anniversary on October 14, Wednesday.

Queridos feligreses, ¡Saludos de gracia y paz! Como saben, el Santo Padre Francisco ha publicado recientemente una carta encíclica de fecha 4

de octubre de 2020 titulada 'Fratelli Tutti' sobre hermandad y amistades sociales inspiradas en las palabras de su homónimo San Francisco de Asís. Destacó el valor de las relaciones sociales no sólo en nuestros pequeños círculos, sino más importante aún, la humanidad, en su conjunto. Todos estamos relacionados y conectados entre nosotros. Reflexionó extensamente sobre la parábola del Buen Samaritano y explicó con gran detalle la pregunta, ¿quién es mi prójimo? No somos simplemente vecinos. Somos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo. Si tratamos a cada persona con bondad y benevolencia, crearemos un mundo mejor, una sociedad decente. Para algunos que pueden tener problemas con la lectura de un documento del Santo Padre, les digo, es legible y entretenido. Te aconsejo encarecidamente a que lo leas.

En anticipación a la fiesta de San Lucas, evangelista y patrono de una de nuestras parroquias,

hemos tenido una novena que coincidió con el rezo diario del Rosario. Dado que la fiesta cae este domingo, 18 de octubre, celebraremos en espíritu y en la verdad como nuestro Santo Patrón es nuestro icono.

Respect Life ~ Respetar la Vida

In his encyclical on the Gospel of life, Pope St. John Paul II recognizes the full range of threats against human life, from poverty and malnutrition to murder and war. He places particular emphasis, however, on threats to life at its beginning and end—precisely when it is most in need of protection. In modern times, children in their mothers’ wombs and those approaching the end of their lives are certainly among the “least of these” in our world’s estimation. Practices such as abortion and assisted suicide tragically reject the truth that human life is always to be cherished and defended with loving concern. As the Church celebrates the 25th anniversary of Pope St. John Paul II’s prophetic encyclical, let us reflect on how we personally live out the Gospel: Do I talk about and act towards others as I would talk about and treat Jesus himself? Do I inform myself of the Church’s teachings and engage in the civic arena as first a follower of Christ? Do I support and advocate for laws and policies that protect and defend human life? Do I help pregnant and parenting mothers in need? Am I ready to support a loved one nearing death? Through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, may Our Lord grant us the grace to truly and courageously live his Gospel of life.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is most grateful for the support we are receiving during these difficult days of COVID-19. Our mission is to serve those most vulnerable in our community and we

know at this time that more of our brothers and sisters are struggling. It has been a joy to see members of our faith community reach out to assist those in need. We would like to recognize Jessica Mikhail and her husband Emmanuel for their support. Jessica reached out to us at the beginning of the month and volunteered to make lunches on Wed. Due to their generosity 35

more people are receiving a meal every Wed. For some, this is the only meal they will eat that day. Because Jessica is preparing lunches on Wed we are now able to feed the hungry

on Mon, Wed and Fri. If you would like to support The Society of St. Vincent de Paul please call or stop by at 543 G.

Avenue, Mon– Fri from 10 am to 3pm. We are looking for volunteers in our thrift store so we can continue to remain open Mon – Sat from 10 am to 3pm.

If you know of someone who is having difficulties please encourage them to stop by our office on Tues or Thurs from 1pm to 2:30pm for assistance.

We thank everyone who has assisted us, or is currently providing their time, talent and treasure to ensure we continue to support the most vulnerable in the Douglas-Pirtleville Community.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

• As we ease into Phase 2, the daily, public Masses continue. St. Luke, Monday-Wednesday-Friday, 7 am; Immaculate Conception, Tuesday-Thursday, 9 am. Private Masses will prevail on the alternating days. Sunday Mass schedules remain the same.

• RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) began last Monday. If you or someone you know is interested in learning about our faith, coming back to the Church, or has yet to complete the Sacraments of Initiation, attend the session Monday, 6:30 pm, St. Luke parish hall, and register. Bring copies of any sacraments you have already received. An 8-10 week format has been designed for the adult Confirmation program. Sacraments will be administered at the Easter Vigil Mass.

• Our Catholic Community will offer Mass on All Souls Day, November 2, to honor our loved ones who have died in our Douglas community. Please bring a picture and / or obituary of your family member to pin on the board in the Church. Mass will be offered at St. Luke, 6 pm, English, and Immaculate Conception, 7 pm, Spanish. Call the parish office to reserve your seat for whichever Mass you wish to attend.

• Confessions continue Friday evenings, 6—7 pm, Immaculate Conception, and Saturday mornings, 7:30—8:30 am, St. Luke.

• We congratulate the students from St. Bernard who received the Body of Christ for the first time during their First Communion Mass this past week. This concludes all Sacramental Masses from this past CCD year. We again thank you for your understanding and patience.

• October is both Respect Life Month and the Month dedicated to the Holy Rosary. The Rosary is recited at St. Bernard, 5 pm, Spanish, daily; Immaculate Conception, 10 am, Spanish, daily, live-streamed; and St. Luke, 6 pm, English, Monday-Wednesday-Friday, live-streamed. Please pray with us.
