• GEONS teachers used magnetometer data and THEMIS lessons in their classrooms.

• We updated the THEMIS E/PO news and events web page with the THEMIS maneuvers.

• We sent weekly emails to the GEONS teachers to keep in touch.

• Together with the Solar Center at Stanford and the IHY E/PO coordinators, we created a website for World Space Week in October for teachers and students to participate in Sudden Ionospheric Disturbance data from Solar Flares and THEMIS magnetometer data disturbances from Coronal Mass Ejections. Unfortunately there were none of these solar events and little participation since we developed and advertised it late. We will repeat the event next year.

• We updated the THEMIS teacher guides with many of the comments from a NASA science-education panel review (Mark Moldwin was on this panel).

• Together with several other NASA missions (FAST, RHESSI, and STEREO-IMPACT) we printed 16,000 CD-ROMs with our updated THEMIS teacher guides and distributed 15,000 via NASA’s Sun-Earth Day packets to teachers around the country.

• We presented a THEMIS workshop at the California Science Teachers Association conference.

• We participated in an AGU GIFT workshop in Ethiopia.

• Two GEONS teachers (Laura Orr, OR and Cris DeWolf, MI presented their THEMIS classroom data work at the Fall AGU

• We presented a poster and a talk at professional meetings: Astronomical Society of the Pacific E/PO and AGU conferences

• THEMIS teachers use magnetometer data in 9-12 astronomy and physics classes.

• New high school teacher in Maine with a Ph.D. in space physics, Manju Prakash, becomes part of the GEONS network.

• Thursday, Jan. 24th at the University of California, Berkeley, THEMIS participated in the Polar Gateways Conference remotely via teleconference call, including a section on the E/PO.

• Maine teacher, Dr. Prakash, submitted a THEMIS Education abstract for Spring AGU on her work with THEMIS in the classroom.

Spring 2008

“There has never been a good reason for me to teach how to write an abstract until now. And it is due to your interest in the students’ work. This project has helped our science in so many ways directly due to your understanding of what real education is. Thanks again.” – Victor Trautman, Petersburg, AK THEMIS High School teacher, Feb, 2008

THEMIS E/PO THEMIS SWG, April 9-11, 2008

• A student of Jim Bean’s, GEONS high school teacher in Carson City, NV, detected issue with total magnetic field in McGrath.

• THEMIS E/PO updated its website with evaluation reports on its programs. Cornerstone Evaluation Associates analyzed data and wrote a report on the E/PO website and a year of short-term professional development workshops. Visit http://ds9.ssl.berkeley.edu/themis -> About Us -> E/PO evaluations

• We also updated the web page with information on the main phase of the THEMIS mission.

• Dr. Peticolas and Cris DeWolf, GEONS high school teacher from MI, presented a THEMIS workshop at the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) conference.

• Dr. Angelopoulos presented a talk to amateur astronomers involved with the astronomical society of the pacific.

• Dr. Moldwin submitted an Research Experience for Teachers (RET) proposal from an NSF grant that partners with THEMIS. As part of this project, we will bring the Maine GEONS teacher to UCLA to work with THEMIS data.

Spring 2008 cont.

The NSTA took place in Boston, MA in March at the new convention

center.
