India's economic growth to surpass China's in 2015-16

India's economic growth is projected to surpass that of China's, with the GDP expected to zoom by 7.7 per

cent in 2016, according to a UN report which said India will help accelerate economic growth in South Asia.

The mid-year update of the UN World Economic Situation and Prospects ( WESP), released today, said

India's economy is projected to grow by 7.6 per cent this year and 7.7 per cent in 2016, overtaking China.

China is projected to grow by 7 per cent in 2015 and 6.8 per cent next year.

The report termed South Asia's economic outlook as "largely favourable" since most economies are

expected to experience a strengthening of growth in 2015-16 on the back of stronger domestic

consumption and investment, and a pick-up in exports.

The region's GDP is projected to grow by 6.7 per cent in 2015 and 6.9 per cent in 2016, up from an

estimated 6.3 per cent in 2014--a significant revision of the previous forecast.

"This revision mostly reflects a higher growth trajectory in India," it said.

It said the growth prospects for Iran and Pakistan have also improved moderately, although for both

Page 7: Theme of the year - “LEAN &GREEN” · 2016. 5. 11. · Issue – 130: Dated – 04 June, 2015 Theme of the year - “LEAN &GREEN” EXTENSION OF IIF MOU WITH JAPAN FOUNDRY SOCIETY

countries significant uncertainties remain.Across South Asia, the expansion is expected to be driven by

buoyant household consumption and a gradual recovery in investment.

Private sector demand will be underpinned by a more benign macroeconomic environment, including

considerably lower inflation.

In 2015, global consumer price inflation is expected to average 2.5 per cent, the lowest level since

2009.With oil prices expected to recover slowly and global activity projected to pick up, average inflation is

forecast to accelerate to 3 per cent in 2016.

Average inflation in the region is also projected to fall to its lowest level in almost a decade, following the

recent decline in oil and food prices. As a result, monetary policy has become more expansionary in several

countries, notably in India and Pakistan, it said.

However, despite the improved outlook, South Asia's economies face, to varying degrees, long-standing

development challenges including energy shortages, infrastructure deficits and political and social unrest.

The global economy will continue to grow at a modest pace.

Brazil's pig iron exports tumbled in April

According to statistics provided by SECEX- Foreign Trade Secretariat, the pig iron exports by Brazil during

the month of April this year fell sharply when compared on month-on-month and year-on-year basis.

Brazil’s pig iron exports totaled 49,936 tons during April ’15. The total exports plunged heavily by 79.8%

from the previous month. The country’s pig iron exports had totaled 247,061 tons during the month of

March this year. When compared with the exports during the same month a year before, the Apr ’15 pig

iron exports were down by 80.5%.

The primary destination of Brazilian merchant pig iron was Canada. The country imported 29,100 tons of

pig iron from Brazil during the month. In second place was Taiwan with 14,256 tons. The imports by the US

plunged to 4 tons. The average export price to Canada stood at $270 per ton FOB, whereas exports to

Taiwan averaged at $300 per ton FOB.

The pig iron exports by the country during the initial four months of the year totaled 776,000 tons. The

exports fell marginally by 0.2% during January to April this year when matched with the corresponding

four-month period in 2014.

The largest importer during the initial four-month period in 2015 was the US with 531,000 tons. The

second largest importer was the Netherlands. The imports by the Netherlands totaled 61,000 tons.

Indian containerized Shredded Scrap import prices remain unchanged

The containerized shredded index for Indian imports was unchanged at $298 a ton CFR Nhava Sheva port in

the week ended May 22, as per the latest figures from the Steel Index.

According to TSI, trade was relatively quiet, with many market participants attending the BIR event in

Dubai.

Participants reported that cheap domestic scrap and DRI prices made imports less attractive at this

moment in time, whilst many are also expecting a fall in prices to coincide with Ramadan and the onset of

Page 8: Theme of the year - “LEAN &GREEN” · 2016. 5. 11. · Issue – 130: Dated – 04 June, 2015 Theme of the year - “LEAN &GREEN” EXTENSION OF IIF MOU WITH JAPAN FOUNDRY SOCIETY

the monsoon season.

The DGFT has announced changes to the newly- formed PSIC regulations, although participants are still

seeking further concessions on the directive.

European stainless scrap prices set to slip in early June

Italy, France and Spain may see weaker stainless steel scrap prices in the first week of June, scrap

merchants tell Kallanish. Material availability is very limited in all three countries and the price decrease

may happen on the back of the current slide in base metals and nickel prices. Nickel however is seen

gaining ground again into June according to the bullish LME forward curve. This should rebalance stainless

scrap quotations in the second half of June, Kallanish is told.

The qualities most in demand are standard grades 304 and 316. At the moment, in Italy, France and Spain

grade 304 scrap is sold at a delivered price of €1,300-1,350/t ($1,425-1,480/t) while 316 scrap is at €1,700-

1,750/t delivered.

Meanwhile this will be a slow week for ferrous scrap in Italy due to the June 2 bank holiday and bridge.

Some local mills are taking advantage of the holidays to make an early summer week long stop and will

resume production on June 8, market sources confirm.

Service tax hike becomes effective from 1st June 2015

The cost of services has increasedw.e.f. 1st June, 2015 as the Service Tax hike from the previous 12.36

percent to 14 percent becomes effective, in accordance to Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley's Budget

proposal.

According to reports, some of the services that have become costlier include airlines, banking, insurance,

mobile, advertising, architecture, construction, credit cards, event management and tour operators.

Meanwhile, fares for First Class and AC coaches in passenger trains, as well as freight charges have

increased by 0.5 percent.
