“A Time to Save a Life”
Newspaper article from The News & Record, November 21, 2010.
Summary:
Steve Hatcher, a Greensboro dentist, registered to be a bone marrow donor while he was a college student in Chapel Hill fourteen years ago. He was finally called to donate November 8, 2010. Doctors say that donating marrow is like running two marathons.
ATimetoSaveaLife
Howthesourcerelatestothetheme:Steve Hatcher said, “I’m glad I did it. I’d do it again. Whenever you
do something like that for someone else, it feels so good inside. That feeling…is kind of addictive.”
It isn’t easy to donate blood marrow. Hatcher had to undergo many medical tests, four shots that cause many, many stem cells to be produced, and pain and soreness in his chest and back. His marrow would go to a cancer patient who had leukemia, but that’s the extent of the information he will know about her. Hatcher volunteered his time and healthy blood marrow to help someone who he will never meet. Many people avoid donating blood or marrow because of the pain and difficulties involved. Hatcher did not shy away from what he signed up to do.

SongLyrics
“Hero”byMariahCarey
There'saheroIfyoulookinsideyourheartYoudon'thavetobeafraidOfwhatyouare
There'sananswerIfyoureachintoyoursoulAndthesorrowthatyouknowWillmeltaway
Chorus:AndthenaherocomesalongWiththestrengthtocarryonAndyoucastyourfearsasideAndyouknowyoucansurvive
So when you feel like hope is gone Look inside you and be strong And you'll finally see the truth That a hero lies in you
It's a long road And you face the world alone No one reaches out a hand For you to hold
You can find love If you search within yourself And the emptiness you felt Will disappear
Chorus
Oh ho, Lord knows Dreams are hard to follow But don't let anyone Tear them away, hey yea
Hold on There will be tomorrow In time, you find the way, hey
Then a hero comes along With the strength to carry on

How the source relates to theme:
Whistleblowers exhibit extraordinary strength by putting their jobs and reputations at risk in order to set things right. Famous whistleblowers include Jeffrey Wigand who appeared on 60 Minutes in 1996 to reveal that his company Brown & Williamson increased nicotine amounts in their cigarettes on purpose to further hook their smokers.
