Thematic Starting PossessionsPreparation:Print the following sheets double-sided (or paste them together) such that you end up with eight double-sided sheets with eight Starting Possession cards each, and cut the cards out. Each card corresponds to an investigator. The pages are grouped by expansion, so that you can print out only the cards corresponding to investigators you own.
Setup:Perform the normal setup of the game as instructed in the Arkham Horror rulebook, with the following additions and changes listed below:
4. Determine InvestigatorsAfter the investigators are chosen, search for the Starting Possession cards with each investigator’s name on them and give them to the appropriate player.
7. Receive Fixed PossessionsEach investigator checks both sides of his Starting Possession card. Underneath the investigator’s name on one side, the card may indicate a slight change to that investigator’s starting money or clues. In some cases, an investigator may begin with a special card from Curse of the Dark Pharaoh or Miskatonic Horror.
9. Receive Random PossessionsCommon Items:First, Common Items are dealt to all investigators. But this is not done in the normal player order. Instead, the investigator with the lowest Rank Number on his Starting Possession card receives his Common Items first. (Investigators who do not receive random Common Items will not have a green side to their Starting Possession card and will therefore have no Rank Number.)
When dealing each random Common Item to the investigator, you must check to see if the item is listed on the investigator’s Starting Possession card. If it isn’t, you must discard it and continue drawing until you find an item that is listed. Exception: If “Ashcan” Pete chooses the Common Item on the bottom of the deck (as per his ability), it does not need to be listed on his Starting Possession card. When the investigator receives all of his Common Items, the investigator with the next lowest Rank Number receives his Common Items (ties in Rank Number are broken by the normal clockwise player order).
Skills:After all investigators have received their Common Items, the investigators then receive their random Skills (if any). However, this is done in the normal player order. When dealing each random Skill to an investigator, you must check to see if the Skill is listed on the investigator’s Starting Possession card. If it isn’t, you must discard it and continue drawing until you find a Skill that is listed.
Relationship cards:If you are using Relationship cards (Lurker at the Threshold expansion), you now deal those to each investigator. This is also done in the normal player order.
Before dealing each random Relationship to an investigator, you must compare that investigator’s Starting Posession card with the investigator to his left’s card to see which Relationships they have in common. If all such shared Relationship cards are already in play, continue drawing until you find a Relationship that is listed on the current investigator’s card (but not his resultant partner’s). Otherwise, continue drawing until you find a Relationship that is listed on both investigators’ Starting Possesion cards.
By design, each investigator’s Starting Possession card shares at least four relationships with every other investigator’s. Therefore, when dealing relationships to investigators, there is guaranteed to be at least one relationship in the deck that both investigators share for the first four investigator pairs you deal to.
Other random possessions:After all of the above possessions have been received, then, starting with the First Player and continuing clockwise, the investigators receive the remainder of their random possessions. However, note that each investigator who did not receive random Common Items will instead have a special rule when receiving their random Unique Items or Spells.
Starting ally clarification:If an investigator starts with an ally who grants the investigator a random item or skill, that item or skill is not restricted by the investigator’s Starting Possession card.
