L’attenzione al mercato americano vuol mettere a frutto la grande expertise capitalizzata in quasi 80 anni di storia nell’arredo residenziale di alta gamma, nelle forniture per prestigiosi uffici internazionali, e nel ricco e complesso mercato Contract. Nell’ ottobre di quest’anno abbiamo presentato a Colonia la nostra nuova identità: sintesi di una nuova visione l’Office Living. La combinazione dei Know-how Office ed Home permetterà di affrontare l’interior design di un edificio dalle aree comuni, agli uffici operativi, direzionali, relax, meeting bar, caffetteria, lounge conciliando con calore e design i luoghi di relazione con quelli più intimi. Confort, funzionalità, illuminazione e acustica trovano risposte nelle collezioni che stiamo iniziando a presentare. Dare risposte a progetti complessi è la mission che Estel si pone per offrire soluzioni concrete e affascinanti alle mutate esigenze del lavoro e dell’Habitat. Per celebrare questo nuovo incontro, abbiamo scelto un simbolo: Miami. Realizzeremo proprio qui nella prossima primavera un evento speciale nel nostro nuovo spazio contiguo al Design District. Promuoveremo qui a Miami incontri tra l’arte e il design ove saremo lieti di incontrarvi e intrattenervi”.

Iconic Design Iconic Design

C’è un nuovo mercato nel mondo del design, ed è quello che punta sul pezzo unico in cui artigianalità e cultura del progetto si trasformano in elemento di pregio e carattere. Elementi destinati agli interni esclusivi in proprietà private di tutto il mondo. Guardare al futuro, rivisitando il passato: il design investe sul fascino dei suoi pezzi iconici, una scelta giustificata dalla risposta sicura di un investimento sul lungo periodo. Capolavori classici del design, un tocco contemporaneo di forme classiche come nelle panche cartesiane di pelle firmate da Enzo Mari o il tavolo scultoreo di Niemeyer per Estel, azienda che ha scelto di investire su uno stile durevole. Quel ‘long lasting design’ che non interpreta le tendenze passeggere del momento, quanto piuttosto un design di investimento, che acquisisce valore nel tempo. Il progetto va oltre la funzione, si esprime nella ricerca pura, libera del suo autore. Le forme evocano, alludono, citano mondi e linguaggi altri. Come i tavoli Terra o Brancusi, che conquistano con il fascino forte della materia prima, guadagnando gli avamposti del modernariato, e appartenendo appieno al linguaggio espressivo contemporaneo. Entrambi questi due tavoli, monumentali nelle forme, sono veri e propri pezzi unici: sono realizzati infatti impiegando unicamente legni masselli ottenuti da tavole di rovere antico di oltre 200 anni, proveniente da cascine toscane della più autentica tradizione italiana.

There is a new market in the world of design, one that focuses on the unique piece in which the craftsmanship and culture of the project transforms them into items of quality and character. Items intended for the exclusive interiors in private properties around the world. Looking towards the future, revisiting the past: the design invests is charm its iconic pieces, a choice justified by the sure response of a long-term investment.Classical masterpieces of design, a contemporary twist to classical shapes like Cartesian leather benches signed by Enzo Mari or sculptural tables by Niemeyer for Estel, the company that chose to invest in a lasting style. That ‘long-lasting design’ does not interpret the passing trends of the moment but rather a design investment that acquires value over time. The project goes beyond its function, expressing itself in pure research, free from its author. The forms evoke and allude, citing other worlds and other languages. Like the Terra or Brancusi tables that win you over with the strong charm of the raw materials, they trace the direction that modern furniture is moving towards and fully belong to contemporary expressive language. Both of these tables, monumental in form, are truly unique pieces: in fact, they have been realised using only solid wood obtained from antique oak tables that are over 200 years old and come from Tuscan farmhouses in the most authentic Italian tradition.

Con la sua base in metallo a rilievo, proietta una forma inconfondibilmente plastica, una cifra stilistica puramente di Niemeyer. Questo tavolo per Estel, è uno dei pochi pezzi che l’architetto brasiliano ha dedicato al design d’interni.

A Niemeyer’s unmistakable signature, with its metal base in relief projecting a plastic form: this table designed for Estel in 1985, is one of the few pieces the Brazilian architect dedicated to interior design.

Nel 1985 Estel ha commissionato ad Oscar Niemeyer un tavolo da conferenza. Ciò che egli ha immaginato interpretava pienamente la duplice vocazione del brand di design italiano, ovvero di saper vivere la casa e l’ufficio in maniera fluida. Il tavolo, rivolto sia agli spazi domestici che a quelli direzionali, è caratterizzato da una base importante: una gamba scultorea realizzata in legno rivestito di acciaio spazzolato, con piastre di contrappeso interno.

I piani possono essere realizzati in vetro trasparente e in un’ampia scelta di legni masselli. Il tavolo Niemeyer 1985 di Estel trova la sua destinazione ideale tanto nelle aree living domestiche che nelle sale dirigenziali da ufficio. Declinato anche in versione doppia, può raggiungere anche la lunghezza di 4,8 metri.

In 1985 Estel commissioned Oscar Niemeyer to create a conference table. What he imagined fully interpreted the dual vocation of the Italian design company, knowing how to smoothly move between home and office. The table, with both high-profile home interiors and office executive spaces in mind, is characterized by an important base: one single sculptural leg made in wood covered with brushed steel, with internal counter- weight plates. Drawing strength from this pedestal’s utopian shape, modelled on Hispanic baroque curves, the Niemeyer 1985 Table is transfigured into a timeless sculpture, “a cathedral in the desert destined for the conscience of the human race”.

The top can be either in floating tempered glass or in a vast selection of solid wood finish. The collection has been expanded with rectangular double versions with clear glass top finishes paired with leather. The Estel Niemeyer 1985 table fits both in domestic and public living areas, such as executive offices. Presented in the double version, can reach a length of 188 inches.

A Design District

The Miami Design District is a creative neighborhood and a cult destination for those interested in innovative fashion, design, art, architecture and dining.Historically part of the Buena Vista, is a neighborhood of greater Midtown Miami, south of Little Haiti. The Design District is made up primarily of old low-rise warehouses and gallery spaces, that have been reconverted into retail spaces, art galleries, restaurants and cafés. After decades of falling to urban decay, the Design District has risen to fame as a destination for the arts, design and fashion. It is home to over 130 art galleries, showrooms, creative services, architecture studios, stores, antiques dealers, eateries and bars. Every 2nd Saturday of each month a community wide Art & Design Night is held from 7-10 pm. A popular event, Art Galleries and Design Showrooms open their doors to the public for music and refreshments.

Coral Morphologic

Coral Morphologic is a Miami-based art-science endeavor founded by marine biologist Colin Foord and composer Jared McKay in 2007. Together they present coral reef organisms as both archetypal and alien life-forms via photography, site-specific installations, and multi-media artwork. For Design Miami, Coral Morphologic has specifically created ‘Coral Therapy’, a 360-degree view of the natural reef experienced through the Oculus Rift. Participants can don the virtual reality headset and be immersed beneath turquoise waters, surrounded by gently swaying corals and schools of tropical fish. The user can fully explore the waterscape simply by rotating the chair or turning his head.

Institute of Contemporary Art

The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA Miami) opens to the public on December 3 (on view until March 2015) two major exhibitions dedicated to the work of contemporary artists Pedro Reyes and Andra Ursuta. Located in the Miami Design District’s landmark Moore Building, the museum will be free to the public, supporting its goal of expanding educational resources and providing the widest possible access to contemporary art. In honor of the exhibitions and the inauguration of its new museum galleries, ICA Miami will host an opening celebration on Tuesday, December 2, from 7 to 9pm.

Coral Morphologic è una mostra di arte-scienza fondata dal biologo marino Colin Foord e dal compositore Jared McKay nel 2007 a Miami. Insieme presentano organismi della barriera corallina come forme di vita aliene e archetipiche attraverso la fotografia e installazioni site-specific. Opere multi-media per Design Miami saranno create appositamente con l’istallazione ‘Coral Therapy’, una visione a 360 gradi della barriera corallina vissuta attraverso l’Oculus Rift. I visitatori potranno indossare dispositivi di realtà aumentata ed essere immersi sotto le acque turchesi, circondati da creature oscillanti dolcemente, coralli e branchi di pesci tropicali. E’ possibile esplorare a fondo il paesaggio acquatico semplicemente ruotando la sedia o girardi la testa.

“La tendenza di stile negli Stati Uniti e soprattutto sulla costa di Miami si orienta sempre più a un gusto caldo e concreto, così le nostre case vengono sentite meno come musei e più come ...case. Nei progetti residenziali a Miami, gran parte dell’enfasi è destinata alla cucina. Abbiamo visto un cambiamento nel corso degli anni, e dalle cucine chiuse si è passati ad un’area ben collegata alla zona giorno. Durante questa transizione, la maggior parte dei layout tradizionali delle cucine sono stati rivisti e ora abbiamo grandi isole multiuso per mangiare e preparare il cibo. Apparecchi vengono nascosti il più delle volte creando più elementi ‘mobili’ che dirigono naturalmente i gesti negli spazi di vita della casa”.

Negli USA, il più grosso mercato internazionale per i mobili da ufficio, i prodotti made in Italy riscontrano un ottimo apprezzamento, ed è grazie a queste premesse che Estel si propone al mercato delle vendite day by day e dei progetti di arredo integrato. Nel giro di tre anni, il Nord America sarà il primo mercato per Estel, e questo grazie anche all’acquisizione di una importantissima commessa di pareti nella West-Coast per il 2015 e 2016. Come conferma Massimo Stella, direttore commerciale estero di Estel, “la specificità del mercato USA è costituita dalla richiesta di servizio tecnico-commerciale ai più alti livelli con una presenza diretta e un servizio di progettazione pre-vendita e post-vendita tempestivo ed efficace. Per questo, visti i successi recenti Estel sul territorio americano, abbiamo aperto una unità locale Estel America Inc. con sede in New Jersey e la showroom Estel a Miami. Questa città è stata scelta come punto di partenza per le nostre attività, per lo sguardo anche al centro e Sud America che questa location consente, e per le opportunità locali che offre nell’ambito residenziale. In 2014 Estel opened its first “outpost” in North America: a showroom in Miami on Biscayne Blvd, right inside the Design District. Here we are placing the value on our extremely wide range of products and Estel’s ability to operate at 360° within interior design for the Contract Office, Contract Residential, Retail and Home Accessories. In the US, the biggest international market for office furniture, made-in-Italy products have received great acclaim and it is thanks to these premises that Estel offers the market day-by-day sales and integrated furnishings projects. Within three years, North America will become Estel’s main market. This is thanks to the acquisition of a very important walling job on the West Coast for 2015 and 2016. As Massimo Stella, Estel’s Director of Foreign Trade confirms “the US market specifically requests the highest level of technical and commercial services with a direct presence, a pre-sale design service, and timely and effective post-sales service. For this reason, given the recent Estel successes on American soil, we have opened local offices, Estel America Inc., with headquarters in New Jersey and the Estel showroom in Miami. This city was chosen as the starting point for our activities because of the connections to Central and South America that this location allows, as well as for the opportunities it offers in the local residential area. We also expect to be opening of a service center in New York for the local assembly of our product lines. “Which Estel products work better for the American market?” “With conviction,” says Massimo Stella, “Estel will be offering the system of glass walls, executive office lines with desks and conference tables and the entire padded system for the reception, lounge and relax areas which are already enjoying success.”

“The style trend in the United States and especially on Miami’s coast is oriented more and more towards a warmer and more solid taste, so that our homes feel less like museums and more like... homes. In residential projects in Miami, much of the emphasis goes into the kitchen. We have seen a shift over the years from closed-off kitchens to kitchens that are very connected to the living areas. During this transition, many of the traditional layouts for kitchens have been revamped and we now have large multi-purpose islands for dining and preparing food. More and more often appliances are being hidden behind more ‘furniture-like’ elements in the kitchen which help to integrate the kitchen more naturally into the living spaces of the home”.

“Design is part of our world, and most of our artists and designers can be seen as complementary. Embrace is a family of chairs designed by Jorge Pensi for Estel, characterized by a peculiar modern and universally appealing style, a fluid, elegant design for executive chairs, visitor chairs, waiting area sofas with compact dimensions, multi-seat bench, lounge armchair and coffee table.

Alla famiglia Embrace si aggiungono nuovi elementi presentati a Orgatec: la versione Conversation, poltroncine e divanetti per le aree lounge e spazi di riunioni informali, e la versione Meeting, poltroncina che per misure e altezze la rende adatta all’utilizzo attorno a tavoli da riunione.Questa evoluzione della collezione Embrace presenta uno schienale in poliuretano avvolgente unito a una seduta imbottita a strati differenziati di gomma.

New elements presented by Orgatec have been added to the Embrace Family. These additions are the Conversation version with armchairs and sofas for lounge areas and informal meeting spaces, and the Meeting version with an armchair whose measurements and height make it suitable for use around conference tables. This evolution of the Embrace collection has a wrap-around backrest in polyurethane combined with a seat padded with differentiated layers of rubber.

Le sedute, realizzate con una struttura a telaio in multistrato, hanno un design ergonomico e avvolgente, per un alto livello di comfort. L’imbottitura è in poliuretano espanso a densità differenziata per garantire l’ottimale funzionalità ergonomica della seduta. Grande attenzione è stata dedicata alle impunture manuale, dettagli che trasmettono il valore delle alte competenze artigianali presenti nel processo di produzione di Estel.

The work chairs, made with a multilayer frame structure, are in an round ergonomic design, broken by taut lines for a high level of comfort. The padding is in differentiated density polyurethane foam to guarantee the correct ergonomic function of the chair. Great attention has been devoted to the manual stitching, a details that conveys to the high craft skills envolved in Estel’s production process.

The seating family Embrace, Jorge Pensi design for Estel, evolves today in a wide range of upholstered seats from ottomans to benches, to the sofa or daybed.

Gli ambienti contemporanei, soprattutto quelli progettati per grandi superfici, lasciano spesso ampio spazio ai problemi d’acustica. E’ finita l’epoca delle casse acustiche e dei ripetitori audio, per quanto sofisticati e avveniristici potessero essere. In questo viaggio nella musica 3.0, c’è spazio per chi ripensa l’innovazione al ritmo dei new media: è il tempo del suono che si propaga dalle superfici, direttamente dalla ‘materia’ delle cose.

The sounds emitted by the records are amplified by the body in marble, a structure which is both decorative and functional, and that hides its internal electronic components while at the same time naturally amplifying the sounds being reproduced.

Una struttura quindi decorativa e funzionale, che cela al suo interno le componenti elettroniche ed allo stesso tempo amplifica naturalmente il suono riprodotto.

Nessun collegamento elettrico per questo diffusore acustico da smart phone, ultimo nato nella ricca generazione di amplificatori musicali ideati per iPhone et similia: l’iTòch Infinity, creato dai designer dello studio Realizzatori di Idee, nasce dalla lavorazione di un unico blocco di legno d’abete, unito alla conoscenza tecnica di un liutaio. Il legno così modellato amplifica del 30% il suono da emettitori digitali, come gli smartphone appunto, con un timbro piacevolmente armonioso, annullando le frequenze metalliche.

Il focus oggi si rivolge sempre più alla creazione di ambienti di lavoro che promuovano la comunicazione e la relazione, ispirando la creatività e aiutando le persone a rimanere in ottimo equilibrio. Parlare di lavoro e dello spazio che lo accoglie significa affrontare un tema che ci coinvolge tutti. Come lavoriamo oggi e in quali spazi? Quali sono le nuove regole e a quali esigenze funzionali non possiamo rinunciare? Come sono cambiati i comportamenti, i meeting, i ritmi di lavoro nell’ultimo decennio? Infine, quale definizione considerare ancora attuale e univoca per un ufficio quale ‘luogo di lavoro’?

Talking about work and the work area means dealing with an issue that affects us all. How do we work today and in what areas? What are the new rules and what are the functional requirements that we cannot do without? How have behaviours, meetings, and work rhythms changed over the last decade? And finally, what definition should we consider still relevant and unambiguous for an office as a ‘workplace’?

One single table is transformed into a system that adapts to transversal use, interfacing with any environment, from the dining room to the living room, from the kitchen to the bedroom, from the home desk to the office desk, from meeting rooms to the executive offices. Its structure allows you to create extremely customised and flexible accessories.

The distinctive element is represented by the support structure, consisting of metal legs that are inserted into the horizontal profiles with a fluid and measured arch.The surfaces, framed by a wire support frame, are available in different finishes, laminated, painted, varnished, back-lacquered glass, wood or leather; the same availability applies to the supporting structure as well.

Like in a contemporary lab, Estel manufacturing department is the place where shapes and solutions are found to increasingly refine designs and to research the most advanced materials. Past and present dialogue, driven by the passion and attention to detail of each professional involved, from the direction of Alberto Stella, CEO of Estel (in the picture with the architect Arione Camporese, marketing and R&D manager of Home department in Estel) to the engineering, to woodworking, to painting and upholstery unit …The attention goes to where different materials meet, on the stitchings, in the edges and in the corners that are softened. Wood has the core focus in many new dialogues and textures: the natural grain is enhanced, the outer edge of tables naturally follows the cortex, as well as panel’s surfaces are chosen manually among the ones that fits best Estel’s timeless elegance.

Come in un moderno laboratorio, nei reparti di produzione Estel si sperimentano le forme, si trovano le soluzioni sempre più perfezionate, si ricerca tra i materiali più evoluti o più antichi. Passato e presente dialogano senza sosta, tra le passioni e la cura del dettaglio di ciascuna figura coinvolta, dalla direzione seguita da Alberto Stella, Presidente di Estel (nella foto con l’architetto Arione Camporese, direttore marketing e R&D della divisione casa di Estel) alla progettazione, alla falegnameria, alla verniciatura e tapezzeria… La cura si sofferma laddove si incontrano diversi materiali, nelle cuciture, negli angoli, negli spigoli smussati e addolciti. Il legno diviene il protagonista di molti nuovi dialoghi e texture, viene esaltata la naturale venatura delle essenze nel bordo esterno dei tavoli, così come sulle superfici dei pannelli vengono scelti manualmente i tagli e i fogli migliori per andare a comporre l’eleganza senza tempo tipica della produzione Estel.

Con le nuove proposte per il 2014, Estel ha rivolto particolare attenzione ai dettagli, alle piccole finezze che dimostrano una cura rigorosissima nello sviluppo di ogni singolo prodotto, della singola linea di produzione. Per questo, in molti dei suoi prodotti iconici c’è stata un’evoluzione meticolosa ed esatta, valorizzando particolari e finiture che di volta in volta rendono il complemento d’arredo un elemento ‘sensibile’ e vibrante.

Tutto diviene più naturale, i materiali parlano un linguaggio intenso e le linee si fanno morbide. Come nei piani dei tavoli, tutti completamente rivisti nei legni e nelle forme, che hanno accolto una maggiore dolcezza nelle linee, così come quell’irregolarità del piano che racconta la naturalità originaria del tronco d’albero.Le forniture sviluppate da Estel nel corso dei suoi 80 anni di storia, sia per l’arredo casa che per i grandi progetti contract, restituiscono la convinzione che vi sia un’area di unione tra casa e ufficio, di una perfetta ambivalenza alla radice di tanti progetti, la cui identità ‘ampia’ può far confluire due universi. Il tavolo, la libreria e i sistemi a parete, le sedute, gli imbottiti lounge, gli accessori pregiati in cuoio… Ci sono progetti il cui design senza tempo e la piacevolezza quotidiana ci spingono a pensare che esistano esempi di stile contemporaneo, classico, di larga accezione. Su questi progetti simbolo si è concentrata l’attenzione dei progettisti e degli artigiani Estel.

With the 2014 novelties, Estel has paid particular attention to the details, to the small subtleties that demonstrate a rigorous attention to the development of each single product, to the single production line. For this reason, in many of its iconic products there has been a meticulous and accurate evolution, enhancing particulars and finishes that from time to time make the piece of furniture a ‘sensitive’ and vibrant element.

Everything becomes more natural, the materials speak an intense language and the lines soften. Like the surfaces of the tables, all the woods and forms have been completely revised, adopting softer lines that along with some slight irregularities in the surface, tell of the natural origin of the tree trunk. Supplies developed by Estel during the its 80 years of history, both for home furnishing and major contract projects, restore the conviction that there is an area of confluence between home and office, of a perfect ambivalence at the root of many projects whose ‘large’ identity can bring the two worlds together. The table, the bookcase and the wall systems, the chairs, the upholstered lounges, the fine leather accessories… There are projects whose timeless design and daily appeal cause us to think that there are examples of widely accepted contemporary and classic styles. Estel’s designers and craftsmen have concentrated their attention on these symbolic projects.

L’approccio Estel nasce oltre che dall’origine casa anche dall’esperienza maturata per decenni nel mobile per l’ufficio, nella profonda conoscenza dei suoi vincoli specifici, funzionali, ergonomici e di normativa. Nel sapere quali sono le esigenze dei luoghi collettivi e di chi li abita. Estel negli anni e nell’arco di decine di grandi commesse ha appreso come, proprio all’interno di quelle regole e tecnicità rigorose, si possa andare oltre e trovare una via ‘umanizzata’ nell’arredo professionale e una possibilità più calda. Uno spazio che parli di luoghi sensibili, di piaceri sensoriali. E’ in quello spazio che le texture, le finiture, i dettagli ammorbiditi degli angoli e superfici prendono un sapore domestico, accogliente, senza tempo. Materiali naturali e un approccio umano sono importanti oggi come lo erano all’inizio della storia dell’azienda, nel 1937. Una combinazione di pensiero razionale ed emozionale in Estel porta alla continua ricerca di materiali: materiali nuovamente autentici, come le essenze, il legno massello, l’acciaio, il laminato, i pellami italiani, i tessuti, l’alluminio, la plastica, … Un buon design, che non è fatto solo di estetica ma anche di buon servizio. Competenza nelle forniture più complesse, grandi volumi di produzione, controllo del processi, dei tempi di consegna e montaggio, attenzione ai costi sono i caratteri che consentono ad Estel di essere il più vicino possibile alle esigenze della vita quotidiana, dal lavoro, ai progetti collettivi, ai nuovi schemi abitativi domestici.
