Around AntiguaEven the briefest of visits to Antigua soonreveals how rich the island is in both cultureand history and there are many splendidsightseeing opportunities.

Devils Bridge. If you continue beyond Betty’sHope, you will come upon Devil’s Bridge, anatural limestone arch created by the action ofthe surf over countless years. When the tide isrunning high, the waves, surf and spray are atruly spectacular sight.

Harmony Hall. It is well worth making the 10-minute detour off the road to Half Moon Bay,to pay a visit to Harmony Hall. Built around anold sugar mill, the complex houses an artgallery exhibiting paintings, photographs andcrafts by local artists.

The Old Court House in St John’s, located atthe corner of Long and Market Street, will offeryou a memorable glimpse into the history ofAntigua and Barbuda. Built in 1747 from stonequarried from Long Island, it is the oldestbuilding still in use in St John’s. Today it housesthe Museum of Antigua and Barbuda.

Ancient FortsFort James was built on the promontory atthe northern entrance to St John’s Harbour todefend both the harbour and the capital. Theoriginal fortifications were erected in about1675, but most of the structures that can beseen today were built in 1749. During theAmerican Revolution the fort boasted 36 gunsand accommodation for 70 men, but the gunswere never fired in anger.

Fort Barrington. At the northern side of DeepBay is Goat Hill, which boasts the ruins of thefort that saw the most action in Antigua’shistory. The present fortifications were built in1779 and named in honour of the Britishadmiral who had captured St Lucia from theFrench the year before. A climb to the top willreward you with a bird’s-eye view of theentrance to St John’s Harbour.

Fort Berkeley. Fort Berkeley guards theentrance to Nelson's Dockyard in EnglishHarbour. The Fort was started in 1704, over 20years before construction began of thedockyard and it was used up to the midnineteenth Century.

Fort George. South from the village ofLiberta, on Monk’s Hill, lie the ruins of FortGeorge which was built in the 17th century todefend Falmouth. Inside you will discover thefascinating ruins of numerous old buildings, including water cisterns and the threemagazines that were constructed to supply 32large cannons. The view of Falmouth Harbourand the surrounding countryside is quitespectacular.

Falmouth Harbour has been a safeanchorage for ships since Antigua’s earliestdays, and the town on its northern shore wasone of the first settlements. The harbourremains very much in use today, providinganchorage for craft ranging from modernracing sloops and motor yachts, to woodenschooners and classic Trumpys.

Fort Charles, on Blake Island in FalmouthHarbour, is one of the oldest forts in Antigua.Construction began in 1672 and, by 1714, itboasted 14 guns with which to defend Falmouth.

Classic ChurchesOn visiting St John’s for the first time, you willbe struck by the sight of the twin spires of theAnglican Cathedral, which dominate the town. The original wooden structure was built in1681 but was replaced in 1722. In 1843 agreat earthquake struck and destroyed thechurch and in the same year construction ofthe present stone building began.

Parham Church. With its unique octagonalshape, it is undoubtedly one of the mostdistinctive and beautiful churches in the WestIndies. This beautiful building, which wasdesigned by Thomas Weekes, was constructedin the 1840s and has since been painstakinglyrestored to its present glory.

The town of Parham was one of the earliestsettlements in Antigua, although it was neverthe capital as is sometimes claimed.

St George’s. Close to the northern shore ofParham Sound, in an area known as FitchesCreek, there you will discover another churchworth visiting. St George’s enjoys an especiallybeautiful setting, with views overlookingFitches Creek on one side and Parham on theother.

Nelson’s DockyardYour holiday to Antigua would be incompletewithout a visit to English Harbour; Antigua’smost prized historic possession. This is home tothe famous Nelson’s Dockyard, named afterBritain’s Hero of the Battle of Trafalgar, AdmiralHoratio Nelson. It is a great monument to thepast and the only working Georgian dockyardin the world, a lively focus of activity today. The dockyard is a continual buzz of excitement

as a result of being the year round home foryachts and for the floating palaces of thefamous. It is also an attractive option for aleisurely lunch or an afternoon shopping, as itsstately Georgian buildings have beenpainstakingly restored and many now houserestaurants and shops.

The Copper and Lumber Store, whichprovided copper sheathing for the hulls ofwooden ships, now houses a hotel andrestaurant.

The Admiral’s Inn has also been restored toserve as a hotel, and in this charming settingyou can dine on its terraces surrounded byshady trees and stone columns, whilstoverlooking an array of magnificent yachtsmoored in the harbour.

Clarence House was built on the hillsideopposite the dockyard in 1787. It was longbelieved that it was constructed for the use ofPrince William Henry, Duke of Clarence. Todayit is the official residence of the Governor-General.

A perfect way in which to get a good overviewof the island’s history before exploringNelson’s Dockyard is to visit the Dow’s HillInterpretation Centre.

If you are interested in learning a little aboutsome of Antigua’s folklore and legend, atDow’s Hill, there is an informative lecture andan optional tour of the Batcave. A shortpassage leads into the depths of the cave, andit is said that another goes under the sea toGuadeloupe..

On taking the right-hand forkthe road leads to Fort Shirley. Here, on thebluff overlooking English Harbour, the gunemplacements and ordnance building havebeen converted into a restaurant.

Plantation’s pastBetty’s Hope Sugar Plantation is a pivotallocation in Antigua’s past. Having arrived inAntigua from Barbados to introduce large-scale sugar production, ChristopherCodrington established the estate in 1674,naming it after his daughter. Today, twowindmill towers remain, as do the arches ofthe boiling house. Following restoration,Betty’s Hope has the only working sugar millon Antigua. There is also a small museum onsite, which provides interesting backgroundinformation.

Scenic and SereneHalf Moon Bay is thought by many Antiguansto be the most beautiful beach on the island. The crescent shape of the bay, and its entrancefacing the Atlantic, combine to create a varietyof surf conditions, from tiny ripples to crashingrollers.

Fig Tree Drive is one of Antigua’s most scenicroutes, which winds through the south-western part of Antigua, from just outside thevillage of Liberta to Old Road at the head ofCarlisle Bay. The road is lined with lushvegetation and an abundance of exotic fruittrees including mango and banana. A numberof old sugar mills can be seen along the way,as can several beautiful churches.

Shipwrecks and Seashells For those with afascination for the sea, the Museum of Marineand Living Art in St John’s provides hours ofenjoyment. It has on display an extensivecollection of seashells, samples of thenumerous and distinctly different sands to befound on the island’s beaches, relics from oldshipwrecks and copies of items from Antigua’sprehistory that are only now being “re-discovered” and studied.

Infact, Antigua is very popular for weddings, andceremonies can either be held in true island-style on the beach, or more traditionally inchurch. The honeymoon packages offered bymany of the leading hotels are designed toensure that each and every couple feels specialfrom the moment they arrive. A complimentarybottle of chilled Champagne, a bowl of freshfruit, or exotic flowers may well await them intheir room, setting the scene for days ofromantic escapism.

FormalitiesArrangements can begin as soon as a couplearrives (unless they want a church wedding, inwhich case they must contact thecorresponding church official well in advance). The requirements are: presentation of validpassports or birth certificates, ID Card orImmigration form and proof of status (if singlea declaration signed in Antigua; if divorced aDecree Absolute; if a widow or widower,Marriage and Death Certificates). In the caseof a name change, the Deed Poll under which

the change has been made must be presented.A Special License costs EC$405 or US$150 andthe registration fee is EC$100 or US$40. Themarriage offices fee is EC$270 or US$100. Anofficial marriage certificate costs EC$25 orUS$10.

All legal details can be quickly sorted out in asingle visit to the Ministry of Legal Affairs onQueen Elizabeth Highway (Tel: +1268 562 0381).or call the Tourism Authority for information. And when the wedding celebrations are over,newly-weds don’t have tomake tearful farewells orrush for a plane, they cansimply wander down thebeach and let thehoneymoon begin.

Most of the UK’s leadingtour operators will behappy to make yourwedding arrangements foryou, indeed many havespecialist departments totake care of every detail. And after the ceremoniesare over, where better tounwind and enjoy yourfirst days of wedded blissthan on the idyllic twin-island state of Barbuda -the perfect honeymoondestination.
