Installation And Authorisation

Mac OSX 10.8 or above

Open the downloaded disk image and double click on “Install The Glue.pkg” and you will be guided through

the installation process.

Windows XP or later

Unzip the downloaded zip file and double click on the file “Install The Glue.ee” and you will be guided

through the installation process. If you are running a !"#bit $ersion of %indows then only install the !"#bit

$ersion of The Glue.

After installing

Try loading The Glue in your host of choice& if The Glue isn't found please try and “re#scan” your plugins if you

host has this feature. If not then please contact support www.cytomic.com(contact .

Authorisation

%hen first loaded the plugin will display the about bo as shown below. If not authorised the software will run

in permanent Trial mode& the limitations are indicated by a dialogue bo displayed after you click the “Trial...”

button. If you ha$e purchased The Glue you need to authorise it to run the full $ersion. To do so click on the

“)uthorise...”.

*lease replace “The +rop” with “The Glue” in the these screenshots. ,or computers connected to the internet

fill in the “)utomatic )uthorisation” section of The Glue )uthorisation dialogue. To do this enter your -ytomic

username ( email and your password& click on on the “ogin and )uthorise” button. If you are running a

firewall make sure to allow The Glue to connect to the internet to authorise you machine.,or computers not connected to the internet write down the “-hallenge -ode” from the “/anual )uthorisation

0offline1” section at the bottom& then $isit a computer that is connected to the internet& open the “/anual

)uthorisation 0for computer with no internet access1 section below your serial number and follow the

instructions listed.

Software Udates

Updates are periodically released& so please check back from time to time at -ytomic& or set your email

notification settings of your -ytomic user account to be notified of updates. 2ou can do this in the “/y )ccount

8hows the $ersion number and registration information& as well as credits.

$ower -utton

%ith the power off you hard bypass The Glue and can sa$e on cpu because all processing is suspended. If

latency producing o$ersampling is currently enabled a constant delay is still applied to your signal by bypassed

to a$oid host clips and pops as much as possible.

IO Mode

8hows if 8tereo or /ono processing is occurring and if the also adds an “8-” to show the host supports the

eternal side#chain feature of The Glue.

$re#ious /et $reset

-ycles through all presets stored in your preset folder sorted in alphabetical order.

Preset Menu

This menu allows you to manage your presets and can be opened by clicking anywhere on the preset name.

Operations work on the currently selected preset& which is either ) or A. The arrows on the left hand side can be

used to @ump to the net and pre$ious preset.

2ou can copy and paste presets between

different open copies of The Glue& or e$en

email a friend your preset as plain tet by

pasting it into you email program. 2ou can

also copy the current preset to the other one&which is handy when you are about to make

an edit to a preset you like and want to be

able to compare your changes.

%hen you load or sa$e preset the dialog

can open this folder in ,inder(4plorer by

picking “8how *resets ,older”. )ny presets

into this folder.

%hen you select “oad...” from the preset

menu a file dialog bo is opened.

The presets that come with The Glue are put

in a folder called “,actory Aank 9”& but you

can copy your fa$ourite presets into the

default preset folder for Buicker access.

Sa#in& $resets

%hen you select “8a$e...” from the preset menu a file dialog bo is opened and you can update the name of

your preset before sa$ing& which also updates the preset name in the plugin.

Sa#e Settin&s As e%ault

8elect this menu item to make your current settings for all the knob and button positions and o$ersampling

settings and make the the default ones that are loaded when you create another copy of The Glue. If you ha$e

already sa$ed default settings for preset slot ) and or A then you may need to delete those files for since the

8a$e 8ettings )s +efault @ust sa$es the “+efault” file in your preset folder and discussed in the )uto oading

*resets section.

4iew Sies*reset $iew sizes can be recalled $ia the different $iew size menu items& but the entire interface can be

smoothly scaled in size using the resizer control on the bottom right.

Auto oadin& $resets

2ou can auto load presets by sa$ing a preset in the root of your preset folder with the following names6

● “+efault )” will auto load into the ) preset slot

● “+efault A” will auto load into the A preset slot

● “+efault” will autoload into both ) and or A if they don't ha$e their own autoload preset already

Oversa$ling Menu

To impro$e the Buality of audio processing can use o$ersampling. This takes etra -*U and introduces latency

but can help the clarity of high freBuencies. O$ersampling is the process of up#sampling the input signal it to a

higher sample rate& then processes at this higher rate& then down#samples it back to the original rate. This helps

reduce aliasing caused by both compression and the *eak -lip function.

2ou can select between Off& "& C& >& and

9<& which uses approimately 9& !& ;& D&

and 9< respecti$ely the -*U of what The

Glue normally uses. 8hown in brackets is theresultant sample rate& and at the top of the

menu is the number of samples latency that

will be introduced by the o$ersampling. The

later is important if your host doesn't support

automatic latency compensation& or if you

want to manually delay the audio yourself for

any reason.

To make life easier if you switch the sample

rate in your pro@ect& the multiplier is defined in

terms of a base rate of CC.9 k=z or C> k=z. 8oa setting of " will mean you get a minimum

Buality of >>." k=z or D< k=z processing. 8o

if your pro@ect is already at D< k=z& as shown

in the picture below& you can see that setting a

multiplier of " means no o$ersampling will

be done since your pro@ect is already at the

desired rate.

There are two different o$ersample amounts you can set6 Eealtime is what you hear with regular playback and

monitoring in your +)%& and Eender is used when you do an offline bounce or track freeze. The Glue will

automatically switch between the two o$ersampling settings for you& and inform the host of any latency

changes so the o$ersampled track remains locked in phase accurate position with the rest of your audio.




6opy )o Others

Use this command to copy the current o$ersampling settings to all other copies of The Glue that are open. This

is a Buick and easy way to update old settings or to try out different le$els of o$ersampling and see how it

impro$es audio Buality in your song.

Controls

%diting &alues

2ou can edit the $alues of knobs in the following ways6

9. +rag up and down on controls to increase or decrease their $alue

". /ouse wheel on controls to increase or decrease their $alue

!. +ouble click in the center of a knob to enter the eact tet $alue of a knob

C. +ouble click on the outer ring of a knob to snap one of the notched $alues.

'o$ression Meter

8hows the amount of compression occurring to your signal in a roughly E/8 sense. -lick on the meter to

toggle displaying of a yellow peak needle& which shows the true peak of compression applied.

Pea( )%*

This shows is the output signal le$el is near full scale. The 4+ will glow yellow when the *eak -lip In button

is disabled& which indicates a clean but loud signal. %hen the *eak -lip In button is on then the 4+ turns Eed&

and indicates clipping is occurring to your signal.

This control ad@usts when compression starts. ,or more compression turn the knob clockwise to a more

negati$e $alue.

9an&e ;d-<= 0 to +ull ;>"2 d-<

The Eange Fnob is a $ery useful addition to the original design& it allows you to limit the depth of compression

and maintain a more natural sound. 8ince transients typically ha$e the highest peaks in audio the Eange Fnob

has a large effect on their sound& but also limits the total compression depth possible.

)fter analysing the 88 C::: circuit it was found that $arious control $oltages were limited at a fied amount.

The Eange Fnob pro$ides a way to $ary this limiting action which is such a key aspect in why the analog

compression circuit sounds so good.

)ny setting can be made more subtle with the Eange Fnob. It allows you to still grab the sound early but then

off to not o$er#compress. This makes a great alternati$e to parallel compression with the /i Fnob.

)s a guide use $alues from #<: dA to #>: dA to emulate the original characteristics of the compressor& and

$alues of around #9; dA to #C: dA as an alternati$e to using the /i knob.

Ma7eup ;d-<= 0 to (0

This gain is applied to the main compression amplifier& but pre mi control and *eak -lip. The action of the

compressor will turn the $olume down when the signal is abo$e the Threshold& so use this knob to increase the

signal le$el again that has been lost.

)s a rough guide you can look at the needle and match the /akeup Fnob to the peak amount of gain reduction

being applied.

Attac(+ ,atio+ and ,elease -nobs

This controls the speed at which compression is applied. )t fast settings transients will be decreased more

Buickly& and at slower settings the compression will take longer to act so the more of the peak pass through the

compressor unaltered.red

)n etra time of :.:9 has been added to the )ttack times so The Glue can be used for limiting applications.

9atio= 28 (8 10

The Eatio controls how much compression to apply once the signal has passed the Threshold le$el and the

)ttack has allowed the compression to start acting. The Eatio numbers are sometimes confusing since they are

a measure of slope rather than a percentage. This is outlined in the table below6

8o as you can see a ratio of 9: is $ery steep& in fact a ratio of ": would only gi$e you an etra #:.; dA of gainreduction per 9: dA o$er the threshold& and an infinite ratio would only gi$e you an etra #9 dA o$er a ratio of

9:.

Aecause of the structure of The Glue the knee shape is linked to Eatio& a ratio of " has a soft knee& C has a

medium knee and 9: a sharper knee.

9elease ;S<= 0.18 0.28 0.(8 0.*8 0."8 1.28 Auto

The Eelease time is how Buickly the compressor returns the compressed signal back to its original $olume.

8ome etra times ha$e been added to that of the original. If you are looking for the :.! 8econd release time of

the original unit this is eBui$alent to the :." 8econd time on The Glue K the actual time is in between the two.The )uto setting actually uses two times& a slow one as a base compression $alue& and a fast one to react to

transients in the signal. 2ou will see this from the needle& the minimum $alue of compression rises to match the

o$erall $olume of your source material and is slow to release& but the needle mo$es Buickly up and back to this

baseline amount. The )uto Eelease can be too slow to react to $ery large $ariations in source material& but

generally is a useful way to tame a wide range of material in a gentle way.

'o$ression n+ Mi/+ and Pea( 'li n

6ompression In ;Switch<= On8 OB

This switch sets the compression applied and /akeup to : dA which in effect bypasses the compression action.

There are still some +- blocking high pass filters and optionally the *eak -lip still in the signal chain& and the

rest of the compressor is still in action& so you can Buickly compare the effect the compressor is ha$ing on your




dry signal.

Mi ;C<= ry 0 to Wet 100

This control mies the dry signal phase accurately with the compressed signal pre *eak -lip so you can achie$e

parallel compression amounts.

The knob shows you a linear percentage of operation& which fine ad@ustment on either end and more coarse

ad@ustment near ;:H which more closely matches a dA gain knob.

$ea7 6lip In ;Switch<= On8 OB

%arning6 The *eak -lip distorts your signal so if you are unsure as to its use we recommend lea$ing it

disabledL 2ou may also want to consider using the o$erampling feature of The Glue for impro$ed audio Buality

if you want to use the *eak -lip.

The *eak -lip is not a limiter& it is a fied wa$eshaper. It is in effect a zero attack time& zero release time peak

le$el compressor which fied infinite ratio and medium knee. It is linear up #".: dA then has a smooth cur$e to

#:.; dA and then is horizontal. The maimum le$el of #:.; dA is useful so signals aren't pushed too hard which

can possibly cause inter sample o$ershoot on playback.

-are must be taken when using the *eak -lip not to distort the signal too much. It is useful for applications withha$e large transients that need taming and is ideal in combination with the Eange Fnob& which will stop the

compressor from o$er reacting to these transients. %hen in use make sure to toggle the *eak -lip Autton on and

off and to make sure there is minimal audible difference between it being used or not.

,or critical applications where distortion needs to be minimised it is recommended that you use two copies of

The Glue& the first one with a limiting setting to tame the peaks& and the second one with the regular

compression you want to apply.

Sidechain Section

Side>chain D$ ;D<= OB8 20 to 2000

This filter allows for ad@usting how the detector reacts to low freBuencies. It is a gentle #< dA per octa$e high

pass filter that only acts on the sidechain signal& either internal or eternal. ) $alue of around ":: =z is

recommended to reduce pumping caused by low freBuencies.

,or more surgical filtering please use the eternal sidechain facility& which is described net.

Eternal Side>chain In ;Switch<= On8 OB

This button allows you to use any signal you want as the input to the detector. 2ou can use the same signal as

the main signal but apply any filtering or 4M you desire& which is useful for more surgical and correcti$e use of

The Glue K for eample in de#essing.

)nother use for it is to apply a musical rhythm from one signal to another& for eample a drum pattern can

impart $olume changes on a synthesizer part.

The Glue declares an etra set of inputs to the host& for the mono $ersion this will be input "& and for the stereo

$ersion this will be input !NC. *lease consult your host documentation for how to route audio to these etra

inputs of The Glue.
