THEGLORYOFGOD THROUGH PRAYER & SERVICE

LISTENING TO THE VOICES THAT ECHO

As this newsletter is being prepared for publication our world has been thrown into a place of grief, heartache and pain with the missile attack on Malaysian flight MH17 over the Ukraine.

There is anger, disbelief, frustration at this time as the truth has not been allowed to be discovered. May we not allow ourselves to become poisoned by this evil act. May we respond with compassion, love, hope and life in the midst of this devastating event in our world.

We need to unite with the voices of peace for our world in the belief that all the fighting is only causing more heartache and pain. May we all work to be of one heart and hold to God’s dream of creation a peaceful world.

To date we know that 298 people have died, 83 children / babies, 36 Australians, one Catholic nun from Sydney. A family from Keysborough have lost their brother and sister in-law. I’m sure over these coming days, there will be many more tragic and painful stories to be told.

May we as people of faith respond in prayer for all who have died and May They Rest in Peace. For those who are grieving, may the spirit of their loved ones inspire them.

May our world respond with dignity, respect, and justice.

May we hold to God’s kingdom for a better and peaceful world for all.

DEANERY FORUMS

Continuing the Deanery focus on Vatican 2, a group from the Deanery gathered at Resurrection Parish in Keysborough on the 22nd April to hear Denis Fitzgerald trace briefly the theme of Social Justice in the Scriptures and in Church documents. Denis gave brief references from the Scriptures highlighting justice themes as central to the understanding of the Covenant and he also gave highlights of statements made by the Church from Basil the Great to the present. The main focus of his talk was the theme of Social Justice in Vatican 2 and particular in the two documents on the Church, namely Lumen Gentium and Gaudium et Spes. Both of these documents call for the Church (the people of God) to build the reign of God and they call for the Church to renew itself and its engagement with the world so that it can be of service for all. It was good for us as a group to be reminded of the vast number of statements that are there to encourage us in our work for justice, peace and integrity of creation. Denis left us in no doubt about the fact that this work is central to the teaching of Jesus and therefore central to the living of the Gospel in every generation. We pray that we will continue to respond with courage to the pressing issues of justice in our time and that we will never tire of seeking to build the reign of God by the example of our lives and the witness of our faith communities.Brigid Murphy CP St. Paul Apostle Endeavour Hills

On Saturday 21 June we gathered together as a Deanery at Resurrection Parish to share a retreat from Deacon Sang on the Eucharist. The day was made up of talks by Deacon Sang and then small group and larger group discussions.Deacon Sang was a lovely presenter and talked with both humour and honesty. He told us of his journey to Priesthood and the influences of his life. He shared his experience of poverty, of hardship and how those around him, especially his parents, had a strong faith and a love for the Eucharist. He felt privileged to be a witness to their faith. When discussing the Eucharist, Deacon Sang gave some lovely images. He was influenced by Philippians 2:6-11, that Jesus is a real presence in the Eucharist. He heard an advertisement for a bank that he thought was very relevant to Jesus (more so than the bank) – “Always Understand / Always Listen.” and that Jesus can give Peace like no one else.We worked on the theme that Eucharist is Communion and this means relationship. We are together as one when sharing the Eucharist, whether that be at Mass, when taking Communion to the sick or sharing in small gatherings. We spent the first half of the day discussing our personal experiences of the Eucharist and then the second half learning from Scripture. It was a gift to be able share each other’s stories as in the small group discussions people spoke with such faith and honesty. We thank Deacon Sang for his guidance and leadership on this retreat and wish him well on this last stage before his Ordination in September.Cathy Dowling Resurrection Keysborough

Forum One: Social Justice and Vatican II Facilitated by Dennis Fitzgerald

Forum Two: Family Focus Facilitated by Denise Lacey

Denise Lacey, who is the Manager of Marriage and Relationship Education of Catholic Care was the Presenter at our second forum. It was entitled “Building Positive Family Relationships”Denise was a bright, happy and engaging presenter. She suggested many ways to ensure a well-balanced and healthy relationship, primarily by recognising and managing our differences, interests and expectations. Denise told us the importance of making time for each other, respecting the other’s culture, sharing what is going on in each other’s lives and most importantly to have lots of fun together. She taught us how to build on friendships, by maintaining a positive perspective, by acknowledging the significant achievements of the other and to always find any excuse to celebrate your life together.Moira Ryan St. Anthony’s Noble Park

Obituary- Father Leo Saleeba 4 August 1931 - 2 July 2011

Family, friends and colleagues gathered at Resurrection Church on Tuesday 19 July to celebrate a Memorial Mass offered by Father Brian Collins for Father Leo Saleeba who passed away on 2 July 2011. Father Leo was buried in a private service shortly following his death. Father Leo served the Resurrection Catholic Parish Community at Keysborough as Parish Priest for 15 years from 1984 to 1999. Father Leo also faithfully served the Melbourne Catholic Church in the parishes of Geelong, Dandenong, Collingwood, Wattle Park, Moorabbin, Bulleen, Bennettswood, Elwood, Kensington and East Geelong. Throughout his ministry at Resurrection, Father Leo was actively involved in many community groups and activities. He was a great supporter of the Interfaith Network, Rotary and other local

sporting clubs and organisations. He had a great love of the North Melbourne (Kangaroos) football Club as well as The Melbourne Storm and was a member of the Moonee Valley Racing Club. At his Memorial Mass, Vicki Russell, Pastoral Associate of Resurrection Parish, invited various family members and colleagues to place symbols of Father Leo’s faith life and community involvements on a memorial table. Several tributes were expressed by regional Bishop Peter Elliot, Monsignor Peter Jeffrey and by Father Leo’s niece, Justine, who represented Father Leo’s family. Father Leo was remembered as particularly serving those who were struggling with life. He had a strong commitment to social justice issues. Father Leo was a man with strong convictions and many recalled having long debates with him as they shared differing points of view. Mayor of the City of Greater Dandenong, Roz Blades, who attended the service, remembered Father Leo fondly as someone who was very committed to the wider community and who was very encouraging of her as she entered into local government. Father Leo was honoured as a man dedicated to his priesthood and for his love and service of God. May he Rest in Peace. Vicki Russell
