2016 INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY BREAKFAST: ‘PLEDGE FOR PARITY’

Six female members of our Stage 2 Society and Culture Class had a wonderful experience attending a special breakfast recognising International Women’s Day at St Patrick’s College on Tuesday.

The girls, who were invited guests of the Stage 2 Hair and Beauty/Food & Hospitality Class, enjoyed a lovely breakfast provided by the College’s trainee chefs and had the opportunity to listen to a series of female guest speakers across industry and business speak of their experiences in their respective fields. It was a truly inspirational morning; the guest speakers sharing with us their journeys - the importance of setting and chasing goals, evaluating and adapting one’s chosen path, actively seeking mentors and, the importance of believing in oneself. This was a truly memorable experience.

The theme this year was ‘Pledge for Parity’.All guests were asked to donate an item to the charity, Essentials for Women. This worthwhile charity provides basic but costly personal care items for women in need. We would like to thank the following guest speakers for their inspirational stories – role models that all people, regardless of gender, can be inspired by:

Leah Harrison: “I choose to surround myself with people that I know are better…it rubs off.”Tiffany Browne: “You can never dream too big. But you need to have a plan to get there. Chunk your plan into increments. Surround yourself with people you admire.”Sarah Voigt: “You’ve got to make relationships with people you work with.”Rogina McDonald: “People around you might doubt you. Don’t ever think that things are impossible. Follow a career that you absolutely love. Find what it is that you enjoy. Look at the steps that take you there.”Amy Rust (co-founder: Essentials for Women): “We can do a small bit… it’s a collaborative effort.”

Emily Adcock: (Representative for Domestic Violence Shelter): “It’s important to support those in need.”

Our Gleeson students had the following to say of their experience:

“It was an inspirational event to educate women of all ages to aspire and never give

up. The guest speakers assured us that whilst things may not always go to plan, being persistent in overcoming the issues you face will help you achieve success and

happiness.” Brittany Borg (12 DSHUT)

“Going to the breakfast was a great experience. We heard from some successful business women who gave advice on doing

what you love and being determined. It was quite motivating to listen to their stories and advice. The food was good

too!” Hannah Welch (12 DSVAU)

“It was inspiring to see all sorts of women achieve success in the world. The yummy

food was a great bonus too.”Tiana Magin (12 HSPLL)

THE ‘FOUR CORNERSTONES OF EXCELLENCE’ FOR STUDENTS

A fortnight ago I introduced the ‘Four Cornerstones of Excellence’ for students as a work in progress which connected to our Annual Improvement Plan for 2016. The student and staff response to the cornerstones has been excellent and I would like to share with you some of their thinking on each of the ‘four Ps’.

PresenceFor students and staff this term reaches beyond the physical presence at school each day which is recognised as critical to success at school. It also involves a commitment to responsibilities, engagement in learning, being present to all members of the community, making the most of the opportunities presented at Gleeson College and making a positive contribution to all aspects of being a student.

PersistencePersistence speaks of resilience in students. Never giving up on learning, dedicating oneself to the task at hand, learning from mistakes and continually striving for your goals, were all aspects noted by students and staff.

PridePride can sometimes have negative connotations but students and staff spoke of pride as respect for self and others, giving of your best, being proud of your work and the success of others, holding your head high and caring about the Gleeson community.

PrayerfulnessPrayerfulness had the greatest response amongst our student population. They recognised prayerfulness as a state of being, communicating with God, connecting with others and the environment, stilling yourself through meditation, having faith and giving of ourselves in the service of others. I never cease to be amazed at the astuteness of our students and staff and the sincerity of their commitment to the Gleeson College community.

‘Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, in whom the whole building, being

fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are

being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.’ - Ephesians 2:20-22

Open NightOn Tuesday this week we also held our annual Open Night. The evening gave our staff and students an ideal opportunity to showcase some of the many wonderful learning experiences that are offered here at Gleeson. The students who contributed to the evening are to be congratulated on the manner in which they so selflessly gave of their time. 136 student volunteers worked tirelessly to provide the most valuable insight into our fabulous community here at Gleeson College. Special mention must go to our Student Tour Guides who so ably shared their knowledge of Gleeson with guests; so many of our visitors commented on their excellence!

Members of our Parents & Friends Committee (see photo below) deserve a special mention and a huge thank you for giving of their time to provide sustenance for our visitors (and student helpers) by way of a BBQ which, as always, was very popular. Their valuable contribution to this community event was greatly appreciated.

To conduct such an event demands considerable planning in advertising, developing promotional material, assembling information packs, liaising with Cross Campus personnel and coordinating the involvement of staff and students. Mrs Amanda Price and Mrs Rebecca Sinclair have played a key role in this aspect of Open Night and I would like to acknowledge their outstanding contribution to the success of the evening.

It was an evening where the sense of community spirit was very evident and I would like to thank staff, students and parents for their generosity in helping to welcome potential new families to the College. It was another of those many occasions at Gleeson which fills one with an immense sense of pride.

Thank you.

2016 Gleeson Diary Dates

At Gleeson College we encourage students to follow their passion and support them in their many varied learning pathways. 2016 sees Gleeson Old Scholar Jarred Kelly (Class of 2015) take up a position at the James Morrison Academy of Music!

Faced with two offers, one with the Academy and one from the Adelaide Conservatorium (Bachelor of Music - Jazz Performance), Jarred sought lots of opinions in discerning which path he should take.

With the Academy situated in Mount Gambier, it isn't a matter of Jarred just hopping on the bus to work each day! The adventure of a tertiary education for Jarred will include renting and sharing a house with two other students in the Academy (another from SA and one from NSW) and of course packing up his belongings in Adelaide and moving to Mt Gambier to start his learning journey after school.

Jarred is looking forward to playing music with a different group of people every day, as well as the chance to play with international artists. And with Bass Teacher Phil Stack (of Thirsty Merc fame), who wouldn't be excited!!

Challenges Jarred has realised he will need to work through include being responsible for himself 24/7, living without the immediate support he was used to at home such as cooked meals, laundry and the likes. Playing music every day, Jarred is also aware that he will need to push through both mental and physical barriers.

There are around 65 students in the Academy across the three-year qualification and with all this talent in the South East, there is a Jazz Club being established to showcase international artists on weekends and to provide

students the opportunity to play gigs during the week.

So after three years playing in the back marquees of 'Generations in Jazz,' Jarred will now get the chance to play on the main stage...and has been told to get a passport as there is a possibility he will travel overseas to play with the Academy, even as back up for James Morrison himself!

We wish Jarred all the very best as he embarks on his studies at the James Morrison Academy of Music!

STUDENT WELLBEING & SCHOOL BAGS

On travelling to and from school, it is important that all students are aware of some strategies when packing and then carrying their bags so they can lower the risk or prevent injury to their backs.

Some helpful tips are listed below:• Students should avoid carrying a

backpack greater that 10% of their body weight.

• Minimise the weight of a bag by only carrying that day's work. This includes taking only key workbooks, worksheets and minimising text books. There is no need to carry folders, these can be left in locked lockers at the college. If a student is unsure of what may be required, they can check with their subject teacher.

• Consider carrying the device/laptop in a separate bag.

• Distribute weight evenly across both shoulders rather than put the strain on one.

• Place heavy objects as close to the

body as possible to avoid ‘bag sag'. This will help with comfort and balancing the load.

• When the shoulder straps are adjusted the bottom of the backpack should be just above the child’s waist – the backpack should not be hanging low over the buttocks.

• Use the backpack’s compartments to pack items securely and minimise the load moving around during transit. This keeps the load balanced.

• When loading a backpack onto the shoulders and unloading a backpack from the shoulders this should be done at bench height whenever possible to avoid twisting the spine.

• Your child should lift the backpack with a straight back, using their thigh muscles. The backpack should be lifted with both arms close to the body, an arm can then be slipped through one shoulder strap and then the other.

• If possible, only lift a heavy bag from waist height.

• If your child has to lean over, their backpack is too heavy, incorrectly fitted or wrongly packed.

• Remind (or help) children to clean out their bag regularly so they are not carrying around unnecessary items.

An email was sent home to families containing the above information and I hope these hints will benefit your son/daughter in their travels to and from Gleeson College.

Fyfe House came together to meet for our annual House Mass in the DRMC on Wednesday 9 March. We had the privilege of Monsignor John Swann celebrating this special Mass, which explored and emphasised our House theme for 2016 - ‘Focus Yourself For Excellence’.

In reflecting on what this theme means, we also considered the world in which we live and the many ways we are challenged to always tread lightly and act kindly. It was a great coming together of our Fyfe community and an excellent opportunity to spend time in prayer and reflection.
