2017 ANNUAL REPORT

Page 2: TheFamilyPartnership › wp-content › ...in our sex-trafficking prevention and intervention services. A 2Gen approach creates opportunities for ... In 2017, the Minneapolis-St. Paul

This past year was transformative for The Family Partnership! We aligned our programs to focus on implementing a two-generation (2Gen) approach, including trauma-informed counseling services, therapeutic childcare and early learning programming with parental supports, as well as, in our sex-trafficking prevention and intervention services.

A 2Gen approach creates opportunities for children and their parents or caregivers together. It focuses programming on improving outcomes of children, and addressing barriers in the lives of adults to change their trajectory and break the systemic poverty that is passed from generation to generation for too many families.

In 2017, the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area once again made headlines for its high quality of life, yet far too many of our neighbors are being left behind. The Family Partnership is an integral part of the health and social service safety net in the metro area. We continuously push ourselves to innovate to meet the growing demand for solutions and to meet the challenge of providing measurable results.

The Family Partnership has, indeed, innovated and met the challenge: as the drawing on the back cover represents, we expanded access to our behavioral health and Counseling services to meet families where they are – in the spectrum of services as well as geographically – a “we’ll come to you” approach. To further strengthen our Education programs, we added new efforts using research on brain science to our therapeutic preschools, along with enhanced music therapy, math/reading literacy, and language immersion. We continue to focus our Advocacy on sex trafficking through awareness training, street outreach, and programs that support individual victim/survivors to heal and reclaim their lives.

Trusted relationships are at the center of all of our practices and programs. At The Family Partnership, we forge bonds to help people overcome trauma, learn new behaviors, and change life trajectories. In this annual report, you will read stories of the relationships that have helped our clients to succeed.

We thank you for your investment in our mission to clear the path for family success. With your support, we remain steadfast in our commitment to close opportunity gaps and to ensure that every family has the tools they need to build a foundation for prosperity and well-being.

1,939 low-income children, youth and adults benefited from our evidence-based therapies.

2,257partners in the field, such as teachers, case managers and youth workers, were provided with professional development.

89% of criminal justice systems-involved youth we served through our intensive, in-home counseling program avoided out-of-home institutional placement.

94% of these youth had no new criminal offenses six months after completing the program!

IMAGINE AN EIGHTH-GRADE BOY

who was disruptive in class, being sent out of classes weekly and sometimes daily. The ‘intervention room’ at school became the teachers’ default discipline strategy. The young man began meeting with a therapist with The Family Partnership twice a week. Together, they worked on how to respond to authority and understanding boundaries and expectations. After only a few weeks his ability to change his behavior and respond to verbal warnings helped him to remain in class throughout the day, being sent out of class only once between November and January.

The important role of therapy for adolescents is helping them to reduce stress, reduce trauma and increase successful academics, and support their relationships with family and friends.

Counseling improves well-being for children and families who have faced adverse experiences that impede success at school, home or work.

IMAGINE A CHILD just shy of her third birthday. She displayed leadership qualities, but she also had delays in fine motor skills and cognitive development. Her limited vocabulary caused her to resort to temper tantrums or crying as a way to get her needs met.

This child attended The Family Partnership’s Four Directions therapeutic all-day preschool for over 28 months. Teachers worked with her on describing her emotions and feelings and she participated in a social emotional group at the center. Gradually, her tantrums decreased and she began to use words to describe how she was feeling. She had more, and better, social interactions with other children in the classroom. Her teachers and occupational

therapists created play activities that incorporated her love of animals, especially horses. After building skills and setting a daily structure, her scores rose dramatically: from 38% in math skills and 58% in language and literacy when she joined the preschool, to 100% just 18 months later. Her self-confidence improved and she made many friends.

That same child who began at Four Directions preschool, with delays in everything from motor skills to language and cognitive development, graduated in August of 2017, 100% ready for Kindergarten, with the confidence and skills she would need to be successful in school.

20,629 children served through drop-in childcare programs at government centers.

92% of children who graduated from The Family Partnership’s preschools tested ready for kindergarten.

482 babies, children, and families are healthy, more resilient, and developing executive functioning thanks to our work with high risk, pregnant and postpartum moms, our multicultural therapeutic preschools, and our educational programs and counseling for their parents. 94% of 116 families

of preschoolers used parenting techniques that promote school readiness; 83% promoted language development at home.

EDUCATION

Our Preschools are: • Therapeutic, using cutting edge brain-science

to inform programming

• Multicultural and multilingual, and

• 4-Star Parent-Aware and NAEYC accredited

The Family Partnership is one of only a few organizations in the state to employ onsite occupational, physical, speech, music, and behavioral play therapy staff to support preschool and education programs. You might ask: what is the occupation of a child? Their job is to play.

Children’s play is their work, and at our preschool and education programs, children’s days are full of play. Physical and cognitive skills, including fine motor skills and language acquisition are all derived from play-based learning; it is the foundation for children’s social and emotional development.

ADVOCACY

20,629 children served through drop-in childcare programs at government centers.

94% of 116 families of preschoolers used parenting techniques that promote school readiness; 83% promoted language development at home.

IMAGINE A YOUNG WOMAN who has experienced domestic violence, sexual assault, or violence due to sex trafficking. She is using drugs and alcohol to manage her experience of victimization, and, as a result, is being pushed further into the criminal justice system. She will need a strong support system to help her to stop the drug use and to help her get off the streets. And, even more support when she finds out she is pregnant. She is referred to the PRIDE program by the county’s Drug and Alcohol Court. Her PRIDE advocate will help her find resources for housing and drug counseling. Working closely with her PRIDE advocate she will make a plan for permanent housing and finding a job – to survive and make a life for herself and her child without participating in solicitation. This young woman now works a full-time job that she loves, and she is a good mother to her child. She has built up savings and is doing all the things she thought she couldn’t do. That’s because she tried to make things better, instead of giving up on herself!

The Family Partnership operates one of the first and longest-running programs in the United States for women and teens who have been sexually exploited. We have developed the high level of expertise required to help victims begin the process of healing and putting their life back together. PRIDE (Promoting Recovery, Independence, Dignity, and Equality) Program services include safety planning, counseling and support, and legal assistance.

PRIDE also aids survivors in reaching their educational and employment goals. The program gives victims the best chance to permanently escape sex-trafficking and works to ensure their children do not fall prey to the same devastating poverty.

7

3,470 adults and youth engaged in advocacy initiatives.

95% of clients developed a stronger social support network to avoid future victimization.

273 victim/survivors served through the PRIDE program.76% fully escaped from sex trafficking.

The PRIDE director trained 235 property managers, hotel staff, law enforcement, community members, youth and concerned parents about the signs of commercial sexual exploitation and ways to help individuals being trafficked.

Applying a 2Gen approach to ending intergenerational poverty

Today, we are leveraging a two-generation approach in each of our programs, including trauma-informed counseling services, therapeutic childcare and early learning programming and parental supports, and sex-trafficking prevention and intervention services.

The core components of 2Gen are: early childhood education, health and well-being, postsecondary employment pathways, economic assets, building social capital.
