PRINCIPALrsquoS ADDRESS

P and F Pavers

Now that Term 1 is drawing to a close I hope you have noticed the area in front of our flagpole This is where all the P and F lsquoBuy a Brickrsquo pavers have been laid and it looks quite exceptional There was a lot of behind the scenes work to

make this happen so I want to thank everyone for their patience and a special thanks to Patti McNulty who was the point person for this project and the P and F for their support

Patti and I were both able to find our family pavers and I invite you to come and take a photo with your bricks next time you are on campus The pavers have formed a monument that has taken on a special significance on our campus I have a vision of students a hundred years from now who will gaze upon these pavers and be reminded of the families who supported the College when it was only 16 years old

There are some exciting plans for the money that has been raised by the paver and other initiatives conducted by the P and F in recent times including the purchase of extra oval seating and some really fun playground equipment Watch this space for more details over the coming months

Primary Leadersrsquo Induction

The Primary Leadersrsquo Induction was held on Friday 24 February and you can read more about it in Cherylrsquos article but I just wanted to mention how proud I am of our Primary students and especially their leaders There is nothing tokenism about this event the Primary leaders work very hard and make a huge commitment to their duties as leaders Over the course of a year thousands of hours are donated helping younger students and contributing hugely to the family feel of our school Well done Primary Leaders Photo gallery here

School Photos

Many of you will remember the email I sent out about the unfortunate hacking of our newly appointed official school photographer ndash Queensland School Photography Unfortunately we have since learned that several of our parents were negatively impacted by this fraud If you paid for school photos with your credit card check your statements and contact your bank if there are any unauthorised transactions We will be discussing QSPrsquos security protocols in more detail as soon as possible

Legacy Cup Clean Up

Each year we evaluate the activities for Legacy Cup and this was no different I found myself asking lsquoHow meaningful is the Legacy Cup Clean Uprsquo and I was given a firm lsquoVERYrsquo as an answer Our Primary students take great pride in cleaning the campus and some of them were finding small pieces of litter that I couldnrsquot even see Primary Clean Up photos here

Unfortunately (or fortunately) they did such a good job that the some of our Middle School students had a hard time finding much to clean when it was their turn so we will be looking into making some changes for this next year Middle School photos here

Our Senior students went into the community and did a wonderful job Our the students take it seriously and do some very yucky jobs out of the limelight There was a lot of rubbish and even some bikes and trolleys that needed rescuing from various ditches and puddles

I would like to congratulate our wonderful students for their civic mindedness their servant heartedness and for making this event a success once again

Shaving and Waxing for a Cure

The Student Voice did a brilliant job organising this yearrsquos Leukaemia Foundationrsquos Shave for a Cure Five brave students raised money to have their head shaved and lined up with various degrees of anticipation Anna Rivett was the only girl and she gave

up her long golden locks for her grandmother who is a leukaemia survivor

Ewan McPherson delighted in having his hair cut and you couldnrsquot wipe the smile of his face Jesse and Casey Woods werenrsquot too sure what they were in for but stuck it out until the end and Jonathan Eddie was stoic throughout

Seven less than brave male staff members were dobbed in to have their legs waxed and I was one of the men with the short straw We rolled up our trousers in aid of a good cause and some (Bert Kasselman) seemed to relish in the pain while others (David Heyworth Jarred Pienaar and Brad Hampson) had agony written all over their faces Well done also to John Vreeling Gary Havenga Brad Hampson and Steven Libby who put their best leg forward for a good cause

My only concern was the glee and the excitement on some of the female staff as they prepared to wax the volunteers Not to name names (Colleen Crase Michelle Boroughs and Valerie Beattie) but are you sure it is healthy to want to inflict pain on someone

ANZAC Day March

We have a proud tradition of supporting the local ANZAC March as a whole College This tradition is born out of a deep respect and gratitude for our Australian soldiers and what they have done to protect our freedom I would like to strongly encourage you all to keep this tradition alive by participating in the Beerwah ANZAC Day March

The organisers have worked hard to have everything ready in time for Monday 25 April and are worried that numbers will be down Letrsquos not disappoint them

The details are the same as last year in that the march will

begin in the Coochin Creek Co-op carpark and everyone needs to be assembled by 915am at the latest

The march will exit the Co-op heading down Peachester Road turn left into Turner Street and then right into Turner Park The service will begin promptly at 10am It is often hot so please ensure your children wear sunscreen on the day and have their hats and water with them

This is the last newsletter before ANZAC Day so please put these details in a handy place or type in ANZAC Day in the search bar of our website to call them up when you want to refer to them again

Open Day

Saturday 20 May seems a long way off but it is only a few weeks after the school holidays Please put this date in your calendar now as it is vitally important we have as many student leaders and helpers as possible on the day

Our students are the stars of the day and the best advertisement for the College there is They do a great job as tour guides participate in Dance Drama and Music performances demonstrate Science experiments help raise funds for the Fiji mission trip and produce delicious food in Hospitality

All of our current families are most welcome to attend It is a great family fun day with lots of free activities Primary families have the opportunity to explore Secondary facilities and classrooms and even participate in experiments and curriculum examples Secondary students can show their family and friends around the campus and their participation in activities is greatly valued

Easter

Last year Easter was right at the beginning of the school holidays and this year it is right at the end We will be holding our whole of College Easter Service on Friday 31 March from 840 to 940am You are all welcome to attend but please be aware that seating is extremely limited so you may have to stand for the whole service

Even though there is another full week of school to go this is the last newsletter for the term and I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a safe holiday Whether

you are travelling or having a lsquostaycationrsquo I encourage you to take some time out over Easter to celebrate its true meaning with your family Consider going to your local church or one near where you are holidaying to learn more about why this event is such an important one in the Christian calendar

The weeks leading up to Easter often cause us to reflect on the events surrounding Jesusrsquo death and resurrection Jesusrsquo followers likely felt very lost and alone when their teacher and Lord died on the cross After the miracle of His resurrection He spent some time with them before going back to be with the Father in heaven

As they were saying their goodbyes to Him they were probably wondering ldquowhat happens nextrdquo After being witness to an incredible miracle were they just to go about their lives like nothing happened Of course not

Jesus left them with both an encouragement and a mission ldquoYou will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem Judea Samaria and to the ends of the Earthrdquo (Acts 18) His mission was for them to continue the work that Jesus had started firstly in their city of Jerusalem then further to the

PRIMARY NEWSregion of Judea neighbouring Samaria and to eventually bring the good news to the ends of the earth

And indeed the same words are an encouragement and a mission to believers today The encouragement that we are never without Godrsquos presence The mission to be a witness to the love and grace of Jesus Christ that through the work of the Holy Spirit we are empowered to reach out to our own ldquoJerusalem Judea Samaria and the ends of the earthrdquo

That is the inspiration for this yearsrsquo fundraising efforts The funds raised from the pancake breakfast this term was to meet a need in the local community namely the chaplaincy work at Beerwah State High School Continuing from Term 2 onwards we will be looking to expand beyond to a need further and further afield until we are impacting the world for Christ

With all of your donations we managed to raise an impressive $780 Thank-you to everybody who supported us at the Pancake Breakfast this term and to all of the wonderful volunteers who helped out for a very worthy cause More photos here

Primary Leadersrsquo Induction

Our recent Primary Leadersrsquo Induction assembly was a wonderful celebration of the personal successes of the students collectively and the challenge to rise up and continue to develop their God given skills and lead in a

way that brings honour to themselves their family and their school

The highlight of this special assembly is always the moment when parents grandparents or a significant adult pins the leadership badge on each student It is a very special time when the sense of pride from both students and visitors is almost tangible Photo shoots hugs and kisses and broad smiles create such a joyous atmosphere

Our Performing Arts Captains blessed us with musical items and Mr Renat Yusupov held the student body and visitors captivated as he played a number of musical pieces on the cello

We are very proud of our group of leaders for 2017 and we are confident that they will lead the student body admirable throughout the year Photos from the day can be found here

Legacy Cup Results

After all the excitement of war cries sorting out the cleaning equipment gloves brooms dustpans brushes sponges etc the school was a hive of industry as students bustled around in small groups cleaning gardens verandahs sinks aluminium tables and chairs and any other items they could find

Harmony Day 21 March 2017

During this week classes have been doing activities to encourage an appreciation and tolerance of people from other cultures Our own GCC demographic is becoming more and more culturally diverse every year and this creates a wonderful environment for our children to learn about people from other parts of the world and realise that we can learn a great deal from them

Bullying Survey

To coincide with National Week Against Bullying we conducted our annual bullying survey in Years 3 ndash 6 on Monday 20 March All children completed an anonymous online survey at the same time

The results of this survey were pleasing and there were no significant surprises The value of student voice is most beneficial as we endeavour to keep our school a safe and happy place for all students

Shoes on after School

Students playing after school (except for dance students) should continue to wear their school uniform which includes SHOES Please remember that parents should be supervising all children including little ones under school age so they can play safely ndash particularly on the playground equipment

Sharp Reading Professional Development

Recently we had another visit from Mr Hilton Ayres from New Zealand who has been working with our primary staff and students over the past three years teaching the skill of comprehension Mr Ayres will return in Term 3 to continue and monitor the work from his recent visit We are delighted with the progress in our reading data each year as a result of Sharp Reading and other reading

programmes like Literacy Pro

A text will be sent next Monday to remind parents to check their appointment time as these two days at the end of Term 1 are the opportunity to find out how your children are progressing this year

Remember that there will be child minding on both days to allow parents and Year 3 ndash 6 students to be able to discuss each childrsquos learning without interruption

Sensational Day a Sensational Time

Prep once again celebrated a sensational day of sensory activities rotating around the classes on 17 March We participated in a recording to create sound effects for a funny story made lsquocoloured sandrsquo (salt) bottles stepped through tubs to feel different things including sticky spaghetti and dry rice threaded fruit loops cooked and tasted pancakes created a cool collage and made a shaker to move and groove to the music with God gave us our senses to enjoy the world learn about the world and to stay safe I know the enjoyment factor was high that Friday

Our grateful thanks to the wonderful parents we have who support us when we undertake such a lot in one morning Your help is fabulous

KITCHEN GARDEN NEWS

Our garden has been very appreciative of the rain that fell during the last few weeks Everything has greened up and is growing at a rapid rate We have been harvesting some enormous cucumbers and golden zucchini that the master chefs used in this fortnightrsquos recipe zucchini slice with cucumber salad (p22 Cooking Creations)

We have also been enjoying lots of lovely sweet pineapples from the garden It takes two years for a pineapple to grow and many of the pines were planted when our current Year 2 students just started Prep - thatrsquos a very long time to wait when one is so young

Many punnets have been potted up with seeds of cauliflower broccoli spinach cabbage beetroot and snow peas We have planted seedlings red onions sugar snap peas beans capsicum and eggplant into the garden beds Our corn is also flourishing after the rain

Classes learnt how to distinguish a male from a female flower in the cucurbit family Cucurbits include cucumbers zucchini squash pumpkin and melons The female flower is the one with the fruit at the base the males have a longer stem The flowers need to cross pollinate with one another in order to fertilize and grow the fruit We learnt how to hand pollinate our flowers with small paint brushes and the results have been impressive lots of enormous cucumbers

Many of the children will be disappointed that our term of bug catching has come to an end as this has been a favourite activity in the garden Students have gained an understanding of the diversity of wonderful creatures that are necessary for a healthy garden to flourish

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS

This past week we have focused on issues around bullying as well as celebrating cultural diversity and concentrating on recognising social justice issues in other places around the world These topics go hand in hand They may be local one on one problems of individual harassment or on a

larger scale political giants can oppress or turn a blind eye to the plight of people Ensuring our students are compassionate and wise is important

Cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead observed ldquoNever doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world indeed itrsquos the only thing that ever hasrdquo

Students have had thought provoking lessons on being positive bystanders and addressing bullying appropriately They were also privileged to have a presentation from Levi McGrath who shared on the issues of children growing up in war-torn countries in Africa the plight of refugees around the world and awareness of a program to supply music and sound equipment for remote Indigenous young people living in the Northern Territory

Looking Back on Term 1 in Year 7

The Year 7s have been on quite a journey this term settling into new routines timetables rooms and getting used to many new teachers and expectations Irsquom sure itrsquos been a bit of a roller coaster ride of excitement and nerves In the first week lockers were decorated by Year 11s with lollipops and ribbons to help welcome the students and make them feel more at home The class settled in and overall they have made an excellent start as we have shared some fabulous experiences

Our early days of getting to know each other kicked off on our lsquoLaunchpadrsquo day with team building activities swimming and volleyball games We explored our new way of learning in FUSE ndash a combination of subjects Foundations History Geography (combined as lsquoUnderstanding Societyrsquo) English and also Pastoral Care ndash in our new open shared classroom space Flexibility and choice have characterised the way we do things in FUSE with students encouraged to take on more responsibility for their own learning

By the time the swimming carnival came around in February new friendships were developing as we spent time together We have had guest speakers present on strategies for studying taking notes and generally on how to handle being in secondary school We recognised Clean Up Australia Day by rolling up our sleeves and cleaning our little patch of Australia at GCC in our Legacy Cup challenge we had our formal class photos taken and we endured immunisations with not too many tears

Now as the term draws quickly to a close the students will be very busy with assessment tasks demonstrating what they have learned over the weeks of class activities I encourage them to continue to dig deep to focus on the task at hand to be persistent and persevere As wersquove found out in reading our autobiographies this term in the words of Bethany Hamilton ldquoI donrsquot need easy I just need possiblerdquo

Great possibilities are ahead starting with our Student-Led Parent Conferences early in Term 2 on Thursday 27 April These will be run in the style of a museum exhibit with students displaying lsquoWho Am Irsquo in various creative ways Make sure you save the date now as this will be a showcase of the studentsrsquo work in FUSE in Term 1 You will be able to book a specific time on the day from 130pm to 650pm I look forward to seeing you all then

Looking Back on Term 1 in Year 8

Itrsquos incredible that Term 1 has come to an endhellipnot that I am complaining Term 1 has been huge for the Year 8 students teachers and parents We saw the introduction of the Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) program went on camp participated in the swimming carnival and prepared to run in a cross country I am tired just thinking about it Through all this students have had to complete class work juggle outside activities and hand assignments in by the due date It has been a big Term I would like to congratulate all students on how they have handled these events

I would like to highlight the STEM program that has been an enormous undertaking and has involved a change in mindset by students parents and staff At the beginning of the term a lot of students (and teachers) struggled with the whole concept of 90 students in an open style classroom Many parents students (and teachers) wondered how it would work I can honestly say that the teachers have been amazed how the students have adapted Many students have commented how they like the fact they can work at their own pace sit where they want and can actually discuss and ask questions to more than one teacher Having access to our Connect site where students are able to download lessons and watch help videos on any topic being taught has given the students a feeling of ownership of their own education I cannot praise the students enough for their perseverance with this exciting new endeavour I would like to thank the parents for their support and trust with their childrsquos education

On behalf of the Year 8 teachers I would like to wish everybody a safe and enjoyable holiday and we look forward to seeing you all next term

Please remember that Term 2 will be the winter uniform That means belts and ties for male students

It has certainly been a busy term with lots of things happening in the Senior School

There have been some great community activities over the last couple of weeks On 6 March the Senior School ran its annual Clean Up Beerwah Legacy Cup Competition as part of the

CleanUp Australia program It was fantastic to see our Seniors going around the streets of our community helping to clean them of rubbish Amongst the piles of rubbish they collected they also found and returned three shopping trolleys and a bicycle The three houses were judged by staff and the scores were tallied In third place was Zion and in a tie for first place came Ararat and Sinai

Last week our Senior students in Years 11 and 12 witnessed one of the most powerful docudramas designed to help students understand the importance of safe driving Our students were briefed as a group and then they made their way to the oval There they were confronted with a staged motor vehicle accident carefully set up by RACQ to bring home a powerful message to our young people As the drama unfolded the actors who were students of our College played out their parts and we suddenly realised how sad this situation was All of a sudden there were sirens as an ambulance and police car rushed onto the scene Paramedics worked on one of the actors as police breathalysed the others The driver was arrested and then a hearse arrived to take away the young person who died at the accident site At this stage our students went back to class where RACQ presenters explored what they had witnessed and the students developed strategies to ensure they are not one of the horrifying statistics that we see almost daily I wish to thank RACQ our Ambulance and Police services as well as the undertakers who just happen to be Mrs Bullockrsquos parents Mrs Bullock our Year 11 Coordinator did all the organisation for the program and so I especially want to thank her Finally Irsquod like to thank our actors Mitchell Baker-Spence Jordan Bull and Tenaia Owens who really helped bring true meaning to the drama

On 14 March our QUT young Ambassadors participated in a workshop held at the QUT Caboolture campus For the first part of the workshop

the students participated in a marketing focus group where they answered a series of multiple choice questions relating to university TAFE and school In the second part they heard from Deborah Fisher Deborah is a Creative Industries lecturer at QUTrsquos Caboolture and Kelvin Grove campuses Entitled lsquoshe never wears beigersquo the presentation is based on Deborahrsquos own experience as a local Caboolture girl travelling to New York in search of adventure

The National Day of Action against bullying was on 17 March Our College is fortunate to have minimal bullying however it is always important to help empower students as a group to join together to stand against bullying All our students were given armbands which they have been allowed to wear all this week to demonstrate visually that we do not accept bullying in our community

As we finish this term and focus on Easter and the amazing message it holds for us of love sacrifice and forgiveness I wish you a wonderful Easter break and I look forward to Term 2 I trust our students will use the holiday break to recharge and refocus on their goals for this semester

Our Hospitality cafe has been running every Friday selling milkshakes and slices

This term it was Year 12rsquos job to manage the running of the cafe Some of the profits went to a charity in which the students selected

This term we gave $400 to Destiny Rescue which was a great effort More photos here

Agricultural Science News

After many requests and some serious promises of commitment the Agricultural Science students have taken a leap into the world of cattle and poultry showing They are learning how to handle Brangus cattle from the Ag Farm and preparing them for the Lead Steer and Heifer competition and for the Handlers competition at the Maleny show This will definitely be a first for most of the students and we are all very grateful for the experience and guidance provided by the Ferris family who are showing us the ropes quite literally

Many of the students are becoming involved in poultry showing with plans to show our new Dark Barred Plymouth Rocks along with some Silverlaced Wyandottes Students were treated to direct knowledge about showing poultry from Mr and Mrs Gossow who are very successful poultry breeders in the Toowoomba region

Students who are more interested in plants and produce are busily planting out seeds and seedlings and maintaining the vegetable and fruit areas on the plot Finally there will be our famous camembert cheese to be made by the Year 10s and a few other new cheese varieties created thanks to the Mrs Peters amazing ability and knowledge The show committee has also once again requested the Ag Science and Hospitality crew to put on a presentation in the Small Farmers Tent which students will be preparing for along with providing some community service time on the day to help run some of the show events There really is something for everyone to be involved in for our local Maleny show and the students are looking forward to an amazing time next term

Romeo and Juliet at Glasshouse Christian College

ldquoDid my heart love till now Forswear it sight For I nersquoer saw true beauty till this nightrdquo Romeo in lsquoRomeo and Julietrsquo by William Shakespeare

Love love lovehellip that seems to be the key focus of our Year 10 English students for this term But it is not without cause

Set in the term in which Valentinersquos Day rears its head our students have been exploring the classic lsquoteenrsquo text lsquoRomeo and Julietrsquo From performing THE balcony scene to viewing a modern cinematic version of the play and on to a professional theatre experience our students have been immersed in the romance the conflict and the tragedy of this story of lsquoloversquo

But at the heart of it all (yes a pun) and the core of any authentic discussion of love is Godrsquos love for us and His image of human romantic love ndash a view that is often starkly different to that of our own

To this end Robert Maguire (Senior English Teacher) took the Year 10s aside and shared his thoughts on godly relationships Declaring boldly that Romeo in ldquoclimbing over the back fencerdquo to woo Juliet routed the ldquofront doorrdquo experience in which a man should approach the lady upon which he has set his heart through her protectors and carers her parents

But just like Shakespearersquos message is too powerful for only one performance this message of authentic godly and loving relationships could not be contained to just one hearing Upon discovering this fresh take on an old tale of love Salt FM radio station met with our very own Glasshouse Bard and shared his message with their Sunshine Coast listeners

So as we leave behind the most lsquoromanticrsquo month on the calendar remember that Godrsquos love is not contained in a bunch of flowers or a box of chocolates and unlike Shakespearersquos Romeo and Juliet death was not the end of the story ndash but an offer of eternal life with a call for men and women to love each other just as Christ loved them

PERFORMING ARTSSecondary Drama Drama

The Secondary Drama Club has grown in size for 2017 but what is so great this year is that there is a spread of drama kings and queens across Years 7-12 The students have been busy this term making new friends extending their knowledge and skills and rehearsing for their first performance for the College Easter Celebration next Friday

Last Wednesday (Week 9) was the final week of Drama Club for Term 1 Parents and students can look out for an email early Term 2 to know when rehearsals begin for the upcoming competitions

On Monday 27 February our Year 12s attended the annual University and Tertiary Studies Expo at Beerwah State High School

Representatives from Sunshine Coast University Queensland University of Technology Australian Catholic University University of Queensland Bond University Griffith University University of Southern Queensland Central Queensland University TAFE QLD East Coast and Defence Force Recruiting made presentations on life at university financial support and living away from home

The Showcase was a great opportunity for students to explore course options scholarships and possible pathways

The Defence Force was also on hand to provide the latest information regarding recruitment processes the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) and job opportunities

We will continue to have guest speakers from various tertiary institutions to assembly and have our own Careers and University Expo on 3 August 2017 along with the various University Open Days and Expos available throughout the year

Small but Loud Voices

Each year to celebrate the Voices on the Coast Literature Festival a book called Small But Loud Voices is published to showcase young writersrsquo work from across the Sunshine Coast The anthology is a compilation of poetry narrative and illustrative works Entries for the anthology are collected from school students of all ages from across the Sunshine Coast and schools can submit five entries for Primary or High Schools In 2016 the following studentsrsquo work was chosen to be included in the publication Congratulations to our talented authors whose work has now been published Copies of Small but Loud Voices are available to borrow from the library Copies can also still be purchased via this link

Andrew King Year 4-6 Author Visit

We were thrilled to have author Andrew King (httpengibearcom) join us for the Year 4-6 Primary Author Visit on Tuesday 21 February Andrew is a Brisbane based consulting engineer with qualifications in Chemical and Environmental Engineering and Education With few engineers in childrenrsquos literature Andrew created Engibear and his friends Engilina and the Bearbot to introduce engineering to children Andrew works with Sydney based Architect Benjamin Johnston who illustrates his work

Engibearrsquos Dream was awarded the Presidentrsquos Prize at the 2012 Australian Engineering Excellence Awards Andrew and Ben have now completed their third book Engibearrsquos Trains which is due to be released in 2017

During Andrewrsquos visit students participated in robot design tower and bridge building and paper plane creations (including landing them on an airport runway) Staff and students were captivated by Andrewrsquos skills as an engineer and author They were stretched to think outside the box and to build their teamwork skills in a range of exciting challenges Throughout the day Andrew recorded the studentsrsquo data to showcase their progress and perseverance Students experimented with ideas and used the design process to create them with varying success and lots of trial and error There were certainly some ldquoahardquo moments and shouts of joy as designs became a reality and students celebrated success Photos of Andrewrsquos visit can be found on the GCCHub Gallery

Sunny Kids Camps (For students aged 7-15)

In 2017 the Sunny Kids Camp program is offering two days of awesome creative writing experiences at the Gondor Writersrsquo Centre in Landsborough on Tuesday 4 April (sold out) and Wednesday 12 April The cost is $55 per day

Students will enjoy a full day writing camp with Australian childrenrsquos author Aleesha Darlinson working in a tutorialclass environment with one-on-one time throughout the day plus instructions and advice on writing

Each dayrsquos program offers variety in material to keep young minds switched on and learning There are both elements of writing and drawing involved in each program with plenty of stimulating discussion group and individual exercises plus take home materials

Announcing the Year 6 Regional Readersrsquo Cup Team

We are excited to announce that our first team of Primary students are competing in the Sunshine Coast Year 6 Regional Readersrsquo Cup Students have commenced reading five novels and one picture book during an eight-week reading period They will then compete with other schools at the Regional Competition on Wednesday 17 May at Immanuel Lutheran College At the competition teams will be asked five heat questions per book The top four to five scoring teams will proceed to the finals In the finals teams will be asked 5 more questions per book and 2 tie-breaker questions if required The winning team then has the honour of competing at the State Competition later in the year We look forward to seeing our team prepare and compete in May They are already off to a fantastic start and we wish them all the best Go GCC

Boys Shine at Sunshine Coast Swimming Championships

We have two absolute superstars in the pool Jaymes Roser and Josh Moore absolutely excelled in the Sunshine Coast Regional Swimming Carnival qualifying for the QLD State Championships in every event they swum in

Jaymes swam in six events and qualified for the State Championships in every event and will also swim in two relays He swam personal best times in every event so is really swimming well at the moment Jaymes won the 50m Butterfly 50m and 100m Freestyle he placed 2nd in 50m Backstroke 3rd in 50m Breaststroke 100m Breaststroke and 4th in 100m Backstroke event

Josh swam in four events and also qualified for the State Champs in all his events and will also swim in two relays with Jaymes Josh placed 3rd in 50m Butterfly Backstroke Freestyle and placed 2nd in 100m Freestyle

Jaymes and Josh finished first and second in the 100m Freestyle which was a first for GCC and a very proud moment for our College showing that they certainly are two of the best 11 year old boy swimmers on the Sunshine Coast

Caitlin Moore also swam well winning and qualifying for the State Champs in the 400m Freestyle and 200m Backstroke She swam state qualifying times in other events

B Boys Winners at Softball

The GCC Boysrsquo B team Softball team are Glasshouse Champions Four teams played against other Glasshouse District Schools over the past two Fridays Our teams showed their skill in both fielding and batting hitting many huge balls and making impressive catches

The Boysrsquo B team played nine round games and won every game some comfortably and some after a tight battle where they had to dig deep This performance put them into the finals where they played Glasshouse State School (GSS) in the final Our boys batted first getting six home and then got GSS out with only two runs scored to win 6 ndash 2 This was a fantastic result for a team who were great at batting pitching and fielding

The A boys teams also played really well with accurate fielding and quick balls to base one getting many batters out They also qualified for the finals only having one loss to St Michaelrsquos in round play They were beaten 17 ndash 7 by St Michaelrsquos College but the score was 7 ndash 7 at the end of the first innings which was very tight GCC finished runners up after some great softball and a close game

The A Girlsrsquo team had a great second day of competition finding a way to conquer a Queensland State pitcher and win against her Elimbah team They just missed out on making the final by one run and played Maleny in the 3 vs 4 playoff They lost this game and finished 4th overall in a very high quality competition

but numbers of qualifiers prevented her from representing the Coast in more events

We are very proud of these swimmers as they have trained hard to gain these results We wish them all the best for the State Championships and look forward to hearing their results

Amy Trevan Arno Mens Carl Burgess Chloe Turnbull and Jarod Keeble also competed and gained valuable experience at the carnival with some swimming personal best times

The Girlsrsquo B team were mostly very new to softball and improved with every game they played They had a mixture of wins and losses and played off for 5th and 6th They had lots of fun in this last game against Delaneyrsquos Creek and finished 5th overall which was a great result

These students were all great representatives of GCC and played their very best in every game They encouraged each other and worked really well together as teams It was great to have lots of parents supporting the teams too and your encouragement was fantastic Special thanks go to Mrs Selena Robertson and Mrs Kerry Knapp for their help with the A and B boys teams each week

Students are now looking forward to next terms interschool sport which is soccer and netball Trials will be held in the first few weeks of Term 2

Sophie wins Bronze at Little Athletics State Championships

Many GCC students represented their clubs at the Little Athletics State Championships last weekend

Sophie Trevan was the only medal winner when she won bronze in the under 15 girlsrsquo High Jump event Sophie jumped particularly well in this competition and jumped a new personal best height of 151m beating her old mark by 4cm

Amy Trevan also jumped well and placed 4th jumping 140m in the under 12s High Jump Jacob McGilvray also placed 4th in his under 10s hurdles after competing in 4 other events Molly McCaughey Macauly King Aiden McKellar Lainey Grieve Cassidy Ferris Stephanie Ferris and Lachlan McGilvray also competed and placed mid field in their events and were proud to be competing at state Championships

Nicole Chelsea and Lilli-Jean ndash Sunshine Coast Champions in Softball

Five girls qualified for the Glasshouse District Softball teams which competed in Redcliffe at the Sunshine Coast Regional Championships Nicole Morris Chelsea Lewis and Lilli-Jean Cruise all played in the senior team and won the regional title They won every game comfortably and were undefeated in the entire competition with only two runs batted in against them They faced Caboolture in the final and won 11-1 What a record Chelsea was named the Most Improved Player in the Senior Team after the coaches noticed big improvements to her throwing and catching technique during training and in the competition

Olivia McKenzie and Lara Korczynski were in the Junior team which was quite young and less experienced but played great softball also They finished first after the round robin portion of the carnival with two draws and four wins from six games They faced Nambour in the final and were defeated 8-3 Olivia McKenzie was given the Coachrsquos Award for the way she acted on advice given to her She always listened and applied skills to her game

Senior GCC Eagles Netball Happenings

This year is an exciting year for GCC Netball with our Senior GCC Eagles having entered a massive Monday night competition at Fishermanrsquos Road Maroochydore There are 157 teams from 23 different schools in this competition

There are a total of 754 matches of netball with 80 matches played per night It is a great atmosphere on a Monday night

A huge shout out to Deb Gisler who has been coaching these girls for years now and has been responsible for taking the girls down to the Monday night comps Thanks Deb Our GCC Sport is able to grow when we have passionate and keen help from our community

The girls have played four matches and so far the results are as follows Itrsquos worth mentioning that the girls are in A-reserve Division (the second highest division) so itrsquos a very tough competition The girls are doing an outstanding job Keep up the excellent Netball girls

Senior Sport and Recreational Activities

In Term 1 the Senior Sport and Recreational classes participated in our Rock Climbing practical unit This involved our classes travelling off campus weekly to lsquoRock Itrsquo climbing gym located at Kawana where they were taught coached and challenged in their rock climbing abilities

During Week 7 all three classes went on a full day rock climbing and abseiling excursion at Mt Ngun Ngun as a culmination of their practical assessment for the term

It was an awesome opportunity for students to transfer their knowledge and skills that they had learnt in the six weeks prior into an authentic and unpredictable real life recreational setting

The students were challenged in their problem solving skills their communication skills and their practical rock climbing skills We hope the students know how blessed and fortunate they are to have incredible opportunities like this at GCC

I am very proud of all our swimmers who represented GCC at the Glasshouse District Swimming Carnival The team finished in second place behind Maleny SS which was a fantastic effort especially considering we did not have Jaymes Roser and Olivia Mckenzie competing

We have eight students selected to represent the Glasshouse District at the Sunshine Coast Swimming Carnival soon

The team supported each other well and won many ribbons Josh Moore set three new records and was 11 Boys Age Champion and Chloe Turnbull was Runner Up Age Champion for 10 Girls More photos here
