TheE xaminer - Free Clinics

The Free Clinic board of directors and leadership team have realized that in order to meet the needs of the uninsured in our community, we need to be creative in developing future ser- vices. As a result, our 2016-2019 Strategic Plan calls for expand- ing care beyond the walls of the current facility. Over the past six months, we have formed a partnership with Share House and Medical Teams International to bring urgent medical and dental care to people who are homeless in Vancouver. Because transportation is a chal- lenge for many of these individuals, they are unable to receive urgent health care. Once a month, our staff and volun- teer physicians and dentists pack up supplies and medications and travel to the Share House neigh- borhood. The Free Clinic volunteers are providing “much needed” care for about 20 clients each evening. Expanding our services beyond the walls of our existing Free Clinic was only made possible because of the generosity of our donors. John was uninsured and looking for work when a painful sinus infection nearly sent him to the emer-gency room. “Then I heard about the Free Clinic,” he says. “The volunteers gave me antibiotics and made sure that I was okay managing the rest of my life – food, clothes, housing.” John recovered, found a job and now tells others about the Free Clinic. “When I was down and out, the clinic took away the stress of having to find medical care,” he says. “I’m so grateful to the do-nors who keep those services going.”

For nearly 30 years, the Free Clinic of Southwest Washington and Kai-ser Permanente have partnered to address the health care needs of the uninsured in our community. Dr. Jody Callaghan, lead dentist at Kaiser Permanente Community Health, has worked rigorously over the past

several years to strengthen the relationship with the Free Clinic dental program. “The Free Clinic is wonderful to work with because they do the initial dental screenings at their location, and then refer patients to our clinics in Salmon Creek and Cascade Park for further treatment like teeth cleanings, extractions, and fillings.” A special event that occurs twice a year is Kaiser Days. “On these days, we work with the Free Clinic to pre-book a dental clinic at either our Salmon Creek or Cascade Park locations. Sev-eral Kaiser dentists, specialists, hygienists and assistants volunteer their time to address the oral health needs of people in Clark County. It is incredible to be a part of this community event and our partnership with the Free Clinic is certainly something we continue to treasure.”

Dr. Jody Callaghan is a general dentist for Permanente Dental Associates and serves as the lead dentist at Kaiser Permanente Community Health.

PeaceHealth physician Chris Wheelock knows firsthand the wonderful work the Free Clinic of Southwest Washington of-fers to the local community. Since 2010, he has served in the medical clinic, and 8 years ago began serving on the Free Clin-ic’s dental advisory committee. “Chronic disease can impact both the medical and dental health of a person. If one area is

unhealthy, then often times both are unhealthy.” Along with the Free Clinic, he also serves as a medical care volunteer in the Mobile Satellite Clinic for the Homeless. “I have been surprised by the number of people at Share House who have insurance cards and have not been get-ting any healthcare,” explained Wheelock. “For many car-ing for their chronic conditions is the last thing on their minds. They are mainly thinking about where their next meal is coming from or where they are going to sleep each night. I am proud PeaceHealth financially supports the Free Clinic and many employees of PeaceHealth are regular volunteers. In the family medicine residency we feel so strongly about the mission of the Free Clinic in our community that we send residents to work at the clinic on a weekly basis.”

Dr. Chris Wheelock serves as Associate Program Director at PeaceHealth Southwest Family Medicine.
