That’s the role of the Royal Collection Education team
at Windsor who, along with colleagues at Buckingham
Palace and the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh,
deliver engaging learning programmes for schools and
families at the occupied royal residences.
TheeducationserviceatWindsorbeganinearly1996with
theopeningoftheEducationCentrejustoutsidetheCastle
walls,wherewecouldmeetandgreetschoolgroups,give
informationaboutthehistoryoftheCastleandtheChapelin
theformofateachers’pack,andofferawarm,dryspaceto
eatpicniclunches.Takeupwasbriskandthedevelopment
ofteachingsessionslinkedtoschoolstudiesandofactivity
sheetsandtrailstosupportthechildren’slearningsoon
followed,largelyattherequestofteachersthemselves.
Withnearlyathousandyearsofhistory,theCastlerelates
toeveryhistoricalperiodfromtheNormanConquest
onwards.ThetopicofKnightsandCastlesisapopular
themeforprimaryagechildrenandtheassociationbetween
WindsorandtheOrderoftheGarterisafirmattractionfor
schoolgroups.TheCastleisalsoanidealenvironmentfor

Aitken.Theyare
frequentlycalledupon
todelivertoursrelated
totheKnightsofthe
Garterandtheoccupantsoftheroyaltombs,toHenryVIII
andhisreign,and,forsecondaryschoolstudents,tothe
TudorandStuartperiods.In2010theChapelArchivesand
ChapterLibraryareplanningtomakerelateddocumentary
sourcesavailabletoteachersandpupilsviatheCollege
website.
Forchildrenvisitingwithfamiliesweofferthemed
programmesinschoolholidays,whichinvolveyoungvisitors
followingatrailthroughtheCastleandtheChapeland
takingpartinartactivitiesintheMoatEducationRoom.
Themesfor2010includearmour,toysandmedievalcastles.
Someprogrammesalsooffertoursforfamilygroups,which

defencesandinvestigatingroyalportraiture.
Bothschoolandfamilygroupsusearangeofactivitytrailson
theirvisits,whichfocusonpopularthemessuchas‘Queen
Victoria’and‘Armour’andhelpthemlearnmoreabout
whattheyareseeingintheCastleandtheChapel.Afurther
meansofinterpretationisthefamilyaudioguide,available
freeofcharge.
In2009theeducationserviceatWindsorwontheSandford
AwardforHeritageEducation,whichrecognisesquality
andexcellenceineducationservicesatheritagesitesinthe
UKandIreland.Thiswasateamachievementandincluded
anassessmentofaStGeorge’sChapelschooltour,which
passedwithflyingcolours.
Notwishingtorestonpastsuccesshowever,theEducation
teamisnowembarkingonanewpartnershipprojectwith
MontemPrimarySchoolinSlough.Theprojectaimsto
broadenaccesstoourlearningprogrammesinbothaschool
andafamilycontextandtohelpusevaluateandadaptour
schoolssessionstomeettheneedsofthenewprimary
curriculumbeingintroducedoverthecomingyear.
Manyschoolswiththesameteachershavevisitedusevery
yearsinceouropeningin1996.Whileweimagineourselves
nottohaveagedatall,thewinsome6yearoldswithgap-
toothedsmileswhocamethenmustnowbestrapping20
yearolds,continuingtheirstudiesorembarkingoncareers
–asoberingreflectionperhapsoftheswiftpassageoftime
fortherestofus.

thisdistinctgroupofpeoplebeganto
exercisecontrolattournamentsand,
becausesucheventslaidonbythe
Kinginvolvednoblemenfromacross
theland,theheraldsgainedanever-
growingandunbeatableknowledgeof
thearmsoftheKing’ssubjects.Due
tothisknowledgetheybegantobe
lookeduponastheexpertswhena
disputeconcerningarmsaroseor,in
otherwords,theyweretheheraldic
expertsortheexpertsinheraldry.
About70yearsafterthepostof
GarterKingofArmshadbeencreated
(incidentallythefirstheraldicpost
linkedspecificallytoanorderof
chivalry),KingRichardIIIconstituted
thevariousRoyalHeraldsbyCharter
andfoundedtheCollegeofArms.
BoththenandnowtheCollegeis
presidedoverbyGarter,thePrincipal
KingofArms.TheCollege,under
theSovereignandtheEarlMarshal
(TheDukeofNorfolk)hascontrol
overallEnglishheraldicmatters.In
themodernerathisjurisdictionstill
appliesforasidefromthegrantingof
newarmsorgenealogicalandheraldic
researchthereisthepossibility,albeit
veryrare,ofanheraldiclegaldispute
beingsettledattheCollege.
TodaytherearethreeKingsofArms.

Brakspear’srestorationprogramme
of1921-30,SirChristopherWren’s
surveyof1682havingrecommended
thattheoriginalbeastsbeing“decayed
andbyfallingbreakthelead”should
beremoved,andreplacedby
fashionableRenaissancepineapples,
thelatternothavingoccurred.
TheDeanandCanonsarecommitted
totheconservation,andrenewal
wherenecessary,ofsculptureas
anintegralpartoftherestoration
programmeforStGeorge’sChapel.
Towardsthis,thereisanintention
tolaunchaspecific‘Sculpture
Fund’aimedatensuringthatthe
buildingsculpturecontinuesto
playitsinseparablerolewithinthe
architecturalgeniusofStGeorge’s
Chapel.Speciallimitededition
castingsof‘WindsorBeasts’arebeing
producedfortheStGeorge’sChapel
shopintheDean’sCloister.TheLion
ofEnglandiscastwithitsgildedcrown
andcarryingtheRoyalcoatofArms,as
itappearssittinguponthebalustrade
pieratthebaseoftheprocessional

beneficearenowsharedbetween
theBishopofTruroandtheDean&
CanonsofWindsor.Latein2008the
thenRectorofSaltashannouncedhis
retirement.TheDeanisthenominated
memberofChapterforSaltash,but,
ashewasunabletobepresenton
anyofthepossibleinterviewdates,I
travelledtoCornwallinhisplacein
2009.TogetherwiththeArchdeacon

The Exercise of Patronage
TheDeanandCanonsofWindsorarepatronsof52parishesaroundEngland.As
patrons,theyhaveresponsibilityforappointingnewincumbentstherebyexercising
arightthathasbeenpartoftheChurchofEngland’sadministrationcarriedoverfrom
preReformationdays.
The patronage of individual parishes
came to the Dean & Canons either
by way of a gift or bequest from
as long ago as the 14th century
to some from much more recent
times. Althoughtheworkisnowdone
inconcertwithparishanddiocese,
thevoiceofanindependentpatron
canbeparticularlypertinentifsome
unrealisticexpectationsareonthe
table.Manyparishesaroundthe
countryarenowgatheredtogether
inlargegroupssoitisoftenthecase
thattheDean&Canonsworkclosely
withpatronsofotherparishesinthe
samebenefice.Theycouldbeprivate
individuals,anOxbridgeCollege,a
society,EtonCollegeoroneofmany
otherinstitutions.Thisbroadrange
ofpatronshelpsensurethatchecks
andbalancestakeplaceacrossthe
landandthatthenatureoftheChurch
ofEnglandasanationalentityis
maintained.

King Frances was a hearty king, and loved a royal sport,
And one day, as his lions fought, sat looking on the court;
The nobles filled the benches, and the ladies in their pride.
And ‘mongst them sat the Count de Lorge, with one for whom he sighed.
And truly ‘twas a gallant thing to see that crowning show,
Valour and love, and a king above, and the royal beasts below.
Ramped and roared the lions, with horrid laughing jaws;
They bit, they glared, gave blows like beams, a wind went with their paws;
With wallowing might and stifled roar they rolled on one another,
Till all the pit with sand and mane was in a thunderous smother;
The bloody foam above the bars came whisking through the air;
Said Francis then, ‘Faith, gentlemen, we’re better here than there’.
De Lorge’s love o’erheard the King, a beauteous lively dame
With smiling lips and sharp bright eyes which always seemed the same.
She thought, the Count my lover is, as brave as brave can be;
He surely would do wondrous things to show his love of me.
King, ladies, lovers, all look on; the occasion is divine;
I’ll drop my glove, to prove his love; great glory will be mine.
She dropped her glove, to prove his love, then looked at him and smiled;
He bowed, and in a moment leaped among the lions wild.
The leap was quick, return was quick, he has regained his place,
Then threw the glove, but not with love, right in the lady’s face.
‘By God!’ said Francis, ‘rightly done!’ And he rose from where he sat:
‘No love,’ quoth he, ‘but vanity, sets love a task like that’

Itisdifficulttobelieve
thatthespectacularwall
paintingswhichadorn
theCatherineRoomwere
rediscoveredonlyin1965.
During reconstruction work on the
College’s domestic buildings, the
remains of a painted frieze appeared
under the limewash on three walls
of the fourteenth century first floor
chamber at no. 2 The Cloisters.
Preliminarycleaningrevealedthe
figuresofStJohntheBaptist,St
AnthonyandStCatherinesetagainst
anelaboratefoliagebackground.In
viewofthesignificanceofthefindand
theneedforspecialisttreatment,the
muralswereprotectedbyatemporary
ceilinguntilconservationworkcould
becarriedout,whichwasundertaken
subsequentlyintwophases:in1991-
92,byWolfgangGartner,andin2003,
byAnnBallantyne.Theseoncehidden
treasures,believedtodatefromthe
latefifteenthandearlysixteenth
centuries,maynowbeenjoyedbyall
whovisittheCatherineRoom.
Stylisticandpigmentanalysisofthe
paintingssuggeststhatthesouthwall
muralisearlierthanthoseoftheeast
andwestwalls.ItdepictsStJohnthe
Baptist,identifiedbytheLamband
Flagonabook,and,tohisright,the
PrinceofWales’feathersthrougha
crown.Thebackgroundshowsred
andwhiterosesonatrailingbranch
whichthenjointogetherinanearly
versionoftheTudorrose.Symbolising
theunionofthehousesofYorkand
Lancaster,theemblemindicatesthat
themuralwaspaintedcirca1486,the
yearthatHenryVIImarriedElizabeth
ofYork.ThepresenceofthePrince
ofWales’feathersreinforcesthe
conjectureddate,linkingittothe
birthofPrinceArthurin1486orhis
investitureasPrinceofWalesin

incunabula(booksprintedpriorto
1501)heldintheChapterLibrary.Itis
openontheentryforStAnthonyof

spikedwheelbehindherandtheshield
toherleftwhichbearsheremblems,
thewheelandthesword.Flemishin
character,thecarefullydrawnfacial
featuresandsophisticateddrapery
demonstratefineworkmanship.The
imageofStAnthonyofEgypt,believed
tobeoneofthefoundersofChristian
monasticism,canbeseenontheleft
sideofthewall.Heisidentifiedbya
longstaffsurmountedbyatau(the
GreekletterT),withhisusualassociate,
apigwithabellrounditsneck,and,
abovethepig,ashieldbearinghis
crosswithbellbeneath.
Ofthewestwallpaintings,onlyparts
ofthefoliagedesignandtheheadofa
malefigure,believedtobeStGeorge,
remain.Survivingfragmentsshow
anarmouredsoldierwithraisedvisor,
brandishingaswordinhisrighthand.
Theshieldwhichmighthaveconfirmed
hisidentityismissing.Nothingremains
ofthefigurewhichislikelytohave
gracedthenorthendofthewestwall.

thefriezehaveledAnnBallantyneto
conjecturethatitmighthavebeenSt
FrancisofAssisi.

withthemenandthecrowdsalike
andisnamedlikehispredecessors
afteroneoftheHigh-KingsofIreland.
Hehasbecomesomethingofalocal
celebrityinWindsor,andsomehow
managestosurvivetheaffectionate
attentionsofcountlesschildrenon
opendaysandbattalionevents.
ThebattalionwillleaveWindsor
laterthisyearforthealtogetherless
hospitablesurroundingsofHelmand
Province,wheretheywillcomplete
asixmonthoperationaltour.The
Mickswilltakewiththemmanyhappy
memoriesofWindsor,andIhaveno
doubtthatthesightofthecastleon
theirreturnin2011,andthechapelin
itsmidst,willbeaverywelcomeone.

oftheseisperhapsthered-coated
guardsmenwhodaybydaymount
guardtothedelightofcamera-wielding
visitors,andkeepastatuesquewatch
overtheirSovereignandherhome.
EarlylastyeartheFirstBattalion,Irish
Guards(or‘TheMicks’astheyare
affectionatelyknown)wereproudto
takeoverceremonialdutiesfromthe
ColdstreamGuards.Theirarrivalat
VictoriaBarrackscoincidedwiththeir
annualStPatrick’sDayParadeatwhich
thePrincessRoyalpresentedeach
memberofthebattalionwithasprigof
shamrock.
Oneofthehighlightsof‘Paddy’s
Day’wasthemarchthroughWindsor
thatmorningforChurchParadeinSt
George’sChapel.Theguardsmenwere
verygratefulfortheopportunitytobe
insideabuildingwhichmanyofthem
hadonlyseenbeforefromtheoutside.

their return from Afghanistan in
2011, ‘the sight of the Castle…will
be a very welcome one’.
For eight years (2001-2009) I had
the privilege, whiletryingnotto
neglectmyresponsibilitiesasDeanof
Windsor,ofbeingtheArchbishopof
Canterbury’sEpiscopalRepresentative
toHerMajesty’sForces;orsimply
BishoptotheForces.
Theworkinvolvedaconsiderable
amountoftravelling,bothintheUK
andoverseas.Sometimes,Ivisited
placesthatwerequitedefinitely
inhospitable.Inallcases,Iwashugely
gratefulfortheopportunitytomeet
chaplains,theircongregations,andthe
Forcescommunitieswhomtheyserved
andrepresented.Ihopedtoconvey
atouchofencouragement,andto
remindthemallthattheChurchvalued
theirministry,witnessandworkina
contextthat,tomostofus,isentirely
unfamiliar.
Ithink,especiallywhentheyfound
themselvesinlonely,uncomfortableor
dangerouscircumstances,membersof
ourArmedServiceswerecomfortedby
knowingthatothersprayedforthem.I
knowthatIwasespeciallyawarethat,
inStGeorge’sChapeldaybyday,my
friendsandcolleagueswereconcerned
torememberthem.
Ihopethat,whentheMickseventually
return,thesightoftheCastlewillbea
verywelcomeone,notjustbecauseit
willbeafamiliarsymbolofthenation
whichtheyservecourageously,but
becauseitslovelychapelwillbea
remindertothemthatwehavedone
ourbesttoupholdtheminourprayers.

difficulty or crisis –moreoften

comfortfromtherealityofbeing
prayedfor.
Intercession,prayerthatistoask
Godforsomethingorsomebody,is
averycomplexrealityandproblem.
Intercessoryprayercentresonprayers
ofasking,butGodisnotinsensitive,
deaforunyielding,andweneedtobe
carefulnottotryandtwistGod’sarm.
OnewonderswhetherGodanswers
prayer,or,indeed,howboringitmust
betohearthestreamofintercessions
thatflowfromearthtoheaven!This
imageandthepresuppositionsthat
liebehinditraiseanothersetof
questionsforanotherday.But,let’s
remindourselvesofwhatthisbalance
ofthanksandpraise,pointinguplocal
eventsandworldevents,mightbe
about.
WeplaceallinthepalmofGod’s
hand,lettinggoofourcontroland
waitingtodiscern,intrust,howGod
willtakeandshapesituationswithus.
Thismeanswehavetobesensitive
andalert,todiscern
andrespondwithaction
andcommitmenttothe
shapingthatGodgives
us.Bearingupasituation
faithfullybeforeGodis
asimportantasbeingan
agentofchangeforChristin
thatsituation.
ButGoddoesnotneed
remindingthatweneedtooffer
certainofourhopesandfeelingsto
him.Wedonotneedtobetoolong
inourasking,butneedtotryandpick
upwhatisdeeplyfeltbyothers.My
dailyprayerisenrichedbytheneedsand
concernsthataresharedbysuchdiverse
numberofpeopleinvariousplacesand
situations.
Soprayerisaboutbeingincloseattentionwith
GodandgrowingintoGod’spresenceinaself-
forgetfulway.Butinourprayingweoughtto
searchoutandgraspsomemeasureofintegrity
andbalance.Therearealwaystwosidestoa
storyandweshouldtrytoachievethatbalance
inthewordswechooseforprayer.Iwonder
whatpetitionshavebeenofferedinandaround
thepresentcomplexsituationinIraqand
Afghanistan?Prayingforbothsidesandfor
commonunderstandinginadispute,strife
orwarenlargesourhumanity.

Sonhalf-naked,pointingtohiswoundedside,andGodtheHolySpiritashumanbeingwithwhatlookslikearadianthalo.Theworkissofinethatitcouldhavebeeninspiredbycarversinivory.
Perhapsthisdiscoverycomesasatimelyparableforus.ItremindsusthatwhilstcaringforourreligiousaswellasourmaterialheritageinStGeorge’sweneedtorememberthatwhatwehavereceivedcomesfrompeoplewhogaveoftheirbestskillsinacreativeimitationoftheOnewhoisthemakerofheavenandearth.Itwastheir‘spiritualworship’.
