  • Overview

Amid economic uncertainty, SPJIMR's PGDM programme stood out through a balanced delivery of knowledge (knowing), skills (doing) and attitude (being) based on the Institute's unique pedagogy. The programme graduates met with high acceptance from industry with the class of 175 participants receiving 206 offers, including 33 from first time recruiters. The average annual package for the graduating class was INR 1,613,000 and the median annual package stood at INR 1,595,000.

Recruiter interest in our graduates remains strong and is built on consistent feedback that shows SPJIMR students can work collaboratively, support team effort, can roll up sleeves when required and can influence without power.

The Class of 2011-2013 was the first batch to graduate after the introduction of the semester system under which the academic calendar was aligned with the calendar of leading international B-Schools.

The participants took specialised courses or international projects during fall semester in foreign B-Schools such as University of Maryland and Michigan State University - USA, Schulich School of Business - Canada, IESEG - France, ESB Reutlingen - Germany and National University of Singapore to name a few.

The Class of 2011-13 represented India in global events like St. Gallen's Symposium (Switzerland), HPAIR (Harvard University, USA), World Business Dialogue (Germany), The Negotiation Challenge (Paris) and NUS Asian Stock Pitch Challenge (Singapore).

The participants of Class 2011- 13 were declared winners of LIME (Lessons in Marketing Excellence) in Singapore at the

Unilever's Future Leaders League. Also, participants from the Class of 2012-14 were crowned the L'Oreal Brandstorm 2013 world champions at the grand finale held in Paris.

The Class of 2013 undertook 70 projects in 50 NGOs spread across India. One of the participants of this class is the winner of the Rural Marketing Association of India (RMAI) award for the best summer project in rural marketing.

Each participant of the Class of 2013 mentored a child from under privileged sections of the society as part of the globally acclaimed Abhyudaya programme. Abhyudaya was the recipient of the GMAC MET Fund award at USA. One of the Abhyudaya sitara (mentee) mentored by a participant of this class represented India in the Global Youth Leadership Summit held at San Diego, California.

Around 49% of the Class of 2011-13 received Pre-Placement Offers and Pre-Placement Interviews (PPOs and PPIs) following internships under the pioneering concept of Autumn Internship Programme (AIP). Under this, participants go for internships after the third semester in the final year, after they have completed their specialisation.

    A new batch

SPJIMR received AICTE approval for additional intake of seats. The sanctioned intake to the PGDM programme moved up from 180 to 240 participants in the academic year 2012-13. The Programme received approximately 16000 applications for admissions to the Class of 2012-14. This class consisted of 228 participants with 42% women and 87% participants with work experience of an average of 22 months. Four participants of the class were granted need based scholarship.

We believe in providing each of our participants an opportunity to pursue a profession of choice by enabling them to acquire advanced knowledge and skills wherever applicable.

    The idea is

    1) to allow participants to take up courses and projectsthat can enhance opportunities for growth early in the career

    2) to offer three unique internship opportunities

! Internship in the rural economy and the social sector to understand how people actually live

! International internship with multinational companies and

! Internship with companies during the autumns, under the 'Autumn Internship Project' (AIP) which is a distinguishing feature of the programme.

SPJIMR as an institution has always lived its mission of promoting value based growth and influencing practice. While living this mission, the PGDM programme atSPJIMR is geared towards making participants relevant as practitioners in an environment marked by globalisation and the need for sensitivity to the needs of society.

The key differentiators of the programme are

    1) The process of selection: SPJIMR looks for individuals with certain values and an all-round personality, not merely academic performance.

    2) The needs of recruiters: Our programme is aimed at meeting the needs of the recruiters who are diverse and have different needs. Given that, the selection process also looks at segmentation of the applicant group based on academic background, experience and versatility in terms of the co-curricular activities.

The programme architecture is aligned with that of the top international schools and follows the semester system as against the trimester system followed by other top B-schools in India. The advantage of the semester system is that it allows the participants to spend afull semester taking up specialised electives in topB-schools abroad, especially in the United States.

SPJIMR graduates are well received by our key stakeholders, especially the recruiting companies. Most recruiters have found our participants to be well-grounded, better team players and enthusiastic workers.

The good reputation that SPJIMR graduates enjoy as high quality professionals was reconfirmed in the final placement figures of the Class of 2013. SPJIMR became the first B-school to complete 100% placements for the Class of 2013. The average annual salary increased by 4% as compared to the previous year.

Our unique pedagogic innovations have been received well in India and globally. SPJIMR was invited to present its leadership development initiatives at the AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), Asia Pacific Conference at Tsinghua SEM University, Beijing, China in May 2012. This event was attended by the heads of prominent global B-Schools.

We equip, enable and empower our students to contribute to society. That is undoubtedly our aim.

    ! Globally Relevant and

    ! Socially Sensitive

The pedagogy has been widely acclaimed and has made SPJIMR students stand out because they are equippedto deliver high performance across businesses and geographies and yet remain rooted and sensitive to the overall environment they operate in.

    The PGDM programme is

    ! Recognised by AICTE

! Accredited by the UK-based Association of MBAs

    ! Rated A*** by CRISIL

B-Schools have mostly stressed the “knowing” and “doing” components of management education and have been lagging on teaching the “being” dimension, the one that is the most critical and challenging to deliver meaningfully. At SPJIMR, we give due attention to the “being” dimension and we believe we have been at the forefront in evolving pedagogy that delivers this meaningfully.

    – Dr. M L Shrikant, Dean, SPJIMR

    Globally Relevant & Socially Sensitive

  • The management review and revision of the curriculum for courses undertaken by participants is a continuous process at SPJIMR's PGDM programme. Each course receives feedback from participants, faculty members of the concerned area, industry practitioners and academicians of repute. The suggestions are incorporated at the end of the course and revised by the academic council for incorporation in the next academic year.

One of the key highlights of the new batch was the introduction of a six days yoga training for the batch during the foundation module.

    SOCIAL SENSITIVITY

  • The idea of a larger purpose to business and an inner voice that might guide managers in their key decisions carries deep implications for modern day management, particularly at a time when questions are being raised about the current models of business rooted in the Western ideas of growth centred on a material and acquisitive mindset.

At SPJIMR, we have set out a different path that emphasises:

Ÿ A synthesis of the Western emphasis on efficiency (individualistic, with a concern for the ends) with Eastern values and ethos (societal, with an equally important emphasis on the means)

Ÿ Coexistence of collaborative and competitive modes which strive for individual excellence and yet reinforce a group culture

Ÿ Retaining a motivation for material advancement but balanced with sensitivity to the idea of social justice.

We have long recognised the importance of Eastern ideas in addition to Western theories for addressing pedagogic challenges. We work to influence and shape attitudes of MBA students to strengthen social, moral and ethical dimensions of their personality.

Our five pedagogic innovations under the Leadership Development Programme are designed to shape a positive attitude among participants with an approach that

Ÿ Promotes management and development of the self

    Ÿ Enhances inter personal skills

Ÿ Develops societal consciousness, welfare and harmony

Abhyudaya addresses the big problem of urban poverty and fosters social responsibility and character building amongst the PGDM participants through experience learning. The participants experience the joy of giving by being contributor and not merely a consumer.

The PGDM participants mentored bright, under privileged children, whom we call sitaras, of the neighbouring government schools. They spent 2 hours every fortnight at the sitaras residence and prepared a plan for holistic development for child’s ongoing mentoring process. A diary was maintained by each of the participants for self-introspection and reflection.

The participants also attended monthly cohort meetings with faculty facilitators and alumni mentors to discuss the mentoring approach.

    - Sitara Christopher Blaise

The PGDM participants after the completion of their first year undertook a six week social project in rural areas or urban slums. The participants are expected to work in social sector projects in remote rural areas with a focus on the development aspects provided by the rural agency. Working in socially and economically disadvantaged sections exposes them to hardships and hence instils in them the need to contribute to society.

Fifty NGOs working in the areas of healthcare, rural development, rural marketing, youth empowerment, women empowerment, ecology development and environmental research were shortlisted for the projects undertaken by PGDM participants.

Ten NGOs were from Western region, nine from South, 22 from North and nine from East. Participants worked on various issues ranging from solving acute financial problems, administration problems to providing innovative marketing solutions.

    Development Of Corporate Citizenship (DOCC)

Our DOCC stint at Hamara Foundation helped us interact with the street children, the beneficiaries of the foundation. They've all been through some really traumatic experiences in the past. But it's encouraging and inspiring to see how they've bounced back and created a new life for themselves.

  • Assessment & Development of Managerial & Administrative Potential (ADMAP)

    11

The Science of Spirituality is a course conceived, led and taught by the Dean Dr. M L Shrikant. The course is based on the teachings of the Bhagwad Gita and is the first to be delivered on a blended learning platform, which enables a mix of online learning and in-class interaction with faculty. The course is designed to help participants understand, manage and develop the self, to decipher the nature of subjectivity and appreciate its impact on the decision making process and to develop the capacity to enjoy life for integrated living.

    Science of Spirituality

As part of the Personal Growth Lab, a four day trip to Lonavala was organised to encourage participants to build their team skills through different innovative group activities. At the same time the PG lab provided an environment conducive for self-development and reflection.

Participants were taken out of their comfort zones and away from routine academic sessions into a world where there was enough time for self-reflection.

    Personal Growth (PG) Lab

ADMAP is an experiential laboratory where participants get to work in committees with

The Assessment & Development of Managerial & Administrative Potential (ADMAP) programme is based on 'experiential learning' pedagogy with a focus on 'learning by doing'. The PGDM participants are actively involved in various functions of the Institute for accomplishing real time tasks, under the supervision of faculty members.

For the class of 2012-14, 24 ADMAP committees were formed. One of these is the umbrella ADMAP committee to ensure the efficient working of the other 23 committees.

The participants visited various public sector organisations like the headquarters of the Bombay Electric Supply & Transport Undertaking (BEST), the Air Traffic Control at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport, the National Centre for Performing Arts, the Traffic Police control room at Worli, among other places, and observed administrative issues as they emerge in real time.

Workshops were conducted to provide the participants experiential learning through role play and discussions. Some of the workshops held last year were :

    INDUSTRY INTEGRATION

  • The PGDM initiatives at industry integration

Ÿ help students appreciate business as it operates in the real world and

Ÿ promote experiential learning so that theories and models are looked at from the specific context in which they work.

    Industry Visits

    Perspectives from the Shop Floor

To provide firsthand and practical information about production, operations and techniques used in manufacturing industries and to help students buildon their academic knowledge, SPJIMR organisesindustry visits for students to various manufacturing plants/facilities across India. This takes students right to the heart of the shop floor and provides an opportunity to understand various processes and practices and relate them to theoretical concepts learnt in classes. Apart from traditional manufacturing operations, students also visit modern, IT-driven businesses that are changing the way we do business in India.

In 2012, first year PGDM participants visited the manufacturing facilities of the Parle group, Mumbai, Mahindra & Mahindra, Mumbai and Tata Motors Limited, Pune. A visit was also organised to the National Stock Exchange (NSE) headquarters in Mumbai.

    Industry Visits & Workshops

Acclaimed global academicians and thinkers including Prof. Nirmalya Kumar of London Business School, Prof. Dipak C. Jain of INSEAD, Deans of Schulich Business School and NUS, Singapore have graced the SAC platform in the past.

SAC 2013 saw 60 industry stalwarts and academicians including over 600 corporate participants.

    SPJIMR Academic Conclave

The following were the conclaves and their themes:

The Information Management Conclave had the theme 'India Next- Technology Transforming the Real India'.

The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Sankerson Bannerjee, MD, Accenture who spoke about challenges facing real India, the need to implement technology profitably and opportunities for bridging the gap by making the actual technology products available.

The Consulting Conclave had the theme 'Sustainability – A Choice or A Business Imperative?’

The keynote speaker for the conclave was Dr. StevenA Melnyk, Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management, Michigan State University. His presentation, 'Making sense of sustainability' dealt with understanding sustainability in detail and beyond what is generally perceived.

The HR Conclave carried the theme 'Building Inclusive Workplaces by Harnessing Diversity'.

The keynote speaker for the conclave was Stacy Blake Beard, Associate Professor, Simmons College School of Management, Boston, USA. Her presentation on dealing with the sources of conscious and unconscious bias in an organisation covered biases at various levels which employees face in their profession.

  • The Operations Management Conclave had the theme 'Managing Risks & Sustaining High Performance in Supply Chain'.

The keynote speaker for the conclave was Prof. David J. Closs, the John H McConnell Professor of Business Administration & Chairperson, Department of Supply Chain Management, Michigan State University. The Finance Conclave had the theme 'Tapping the Business Potential in Financial Services in India'.

'Tapping the Business Potential in Financial Services in India' was the theme for the Finance Conclave 2013. The keynote address was delivered by Mrs. Usha Thorat, Director, Centre for Advanced Financial Research and Learning (CAFRAL) and former Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India. She identified four major challenges for the financial industry - to provide safe and convenient product and delivery channels, to assess optimum size and structure of a financial services business, to focus on the fiduciary role in financial services that differentiates the business from many others and progressive regulation – all of which were perceived as highly customer centric.
