What you should know about the Zika Virus Tick control services to keep ticks out of your yard the buz z z z A MONTHLY PUBLICATION FOR PEST CONTROL PROFESSIONALS | March 2016 | Vol. 2 No. 2 CEU CEU The Zika virus is a mosquito- transmitted infection that is carried by the Aedes species of mosquito. The Asian Tiger mosquito is also known to carry the disease but it is unclear how efficiently. Throughout history, mosquitos have been transmitting virus to humans such as malaria, yellow fever and West Nile virus. The virus got its name after being discovered in the Zika forest in Uganda in 1947. Last May an outbreak occurred in Brazil, but until then the Zika virus was contained to Africa and Asia. Few people have strong enough immune defenses to protect against the virus so it is spreading rapidly and affecting millions of people in the tropical regions of the Americas. That being said, most people who are effected by the virus will present little symptoms and no lasting harm. The main focus of the virus is to pregnant woman and those who develop a temporary form of paralysis after being infected with the Zika Virus. New York Times, reports: The World Health Organization has warned that the Zika virus is “spreading explosively” in the Americas and that as many as four million people could be infected by the end of the year. Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have urged pregnant women against travel to about two dozen countries, mostly in the Caribbean and Latin America, where the outbreak is growing. The infection appears to be linked to the development of unusually small heads and brain damage in newborns. Some pregnant women who have been to these regions should be tested for the infection, the agency said. The mosquitos that carry the Zika virus are container breeding mosquitos. Eliminating breeding sites is one of the best lines of defense against mosquitos. Mosquitos need a thimble size amount of water to breed in. A thorough inspection of the property needs to be done to reduce any standing water. Look for standing water in places such as: • Old tires • Childrens outdoor toys • Planters • Soda cans • Clogged gutters • Bird baths **Report any abandoned homes with pools to your local vector control.
