I was glancing through a magazine when I stumbled across this article:

Different Ways to Hide Money at Home

“The best place for your money is the bank. The safest place is in the bank. Failing that, a safe bolted securely to the ground may keep your money from being stolen. However, if these two options aren’t possible and you must hide your money in your home, there are several different approaches you can consider.

Leave a Decoy-robbers will fi nd it and think they’ve found it all; Tape- taping it to a rarely examined surface like the underside of a drawer or Tuck in between

pages of a book; (And My Personal Favorite!) Amid the Minutia- There are a number of excellent hiding places amid the minutia of daily life. For example, the money might be placed in a plastic bag which is then placed beneath the garbage bag already in use. Or you might tuck your cash into the paper towel roll that is currently in use. It’s highly unlikely that a burglar will fi nd the money in these locations. However, it’s reasonably possible that the money will accidentally be discarded, so be sure to keep that in mind when making your decision.”

What? Someone needs to be told ‘How to Hide Money At Home’? I nearly fell out of my chair. Isn’t this a passage into Womanhood? Your “Hidey Hole”. I fi rst became aware of Hidey Holes when my mother and I had “The Talk”. The Financial Independence Talk. A close friend of my mother lost her mother in a terrible car accident in another state. She was sitting at the kitchen table with my mom crying. Mom reached into her purse, took something out and passed it to her friend. The friend looked at mom with

tears in her eyes and said, “Reta, I can’t take that.” Mom shook her head and said, “Oh yes you can. It’s mine and no one will miss it. Now you take it, you’d do the same for me kid, if it was my mother.” They hugged, cried a little longer then she left. I asked mom afterwards what she had given her friend. Mom said, “Roxann, sit down. I think you’re old enough to learn about ‘Hidey Holes’.” My education began. “A smart woman always has a Hidey Hole. A little bit of cash tucked away for emergencies or something special. You never know what life may throw at you, but you need a back up plan. Never spend your entire allotment check, save a little from it every month and tuck it away. Just pretend you don’t have it. Save it for a Rainy Day, believe me, the rain will come.”

Then mom asked me to get the new little coin purse Nana had sent me. She gave me a dollar, a quarter and a dime to put in it. I collected nearly ten dollars before I found a need to use it as a child. The lesson was well learned. Never spend all your money, save a little and hide it.

The Rain will come.My family use to tease me about my

Hidey Hole until they saw the wisdom in it. Broke before payday, unexpected breakdowns or opportunities, ice cream on vacation, gas money, the list goes on. Once Mr. Volunteer forgot the checkbook when he went to the grocery store then remembered my Hidey Hole in the car. I do have several-I know better than to keep it all in one place. Mr. Volunteer only knows of a couple.

After last year’s trip to Disneyland I need to fi nd new Hidey Holes. Everyone in the Terry Kingdom discovered the ones I had. After we counted up what we had saved for our trip, I proceeded to raid the Hidey Holes – “Amid the Minutia”- My desk, the bed stand, two jars in different cupboards, $16.46 in a winter coat pocket……Mr. Volunteer looked at me in amazement and said, “I thought the wrinkled envelope in your purse was your Hidey Hole.” Beth said, “Wow Mom, you’re good.”

My daughter still has the Hidey Hole of fi fty dollars I gave her when she was 17. She’s holding one for the Princess for when she comes of age. Living in the Pacifi c Northwest, I can assure you, the Rain will come.

NEWS FROM THE TOWER

By Ann Votava

Hazel “Good Heart” WelliverHarbor Tower’s #1

“Cheer” LeaderWhen anyone hears the name

Hazel Welliver their immediate feelings are one of compassion, warmth and kindness. Harbor Tower Village hit the jackpot when she became an employee.

Hazel started at Harbor Tower in December of 2007. She came to us after 30 years at Safeway in Oak Harbor. Hazel started as the Program Director. Her responsibilities included developing activities, planning excursions, special events and of course being the #1 “Cheer” Leader!! She excelled at it all.

In May of 2010 Hazel decided it was time to retire. Of course we were all very sad at Harbor Tower. We threw her a big retirement party and hoped she would still remain in our lives. After three weeks Hazel and Harbor Tower missed each other too much and Hazel came back part time as the Executive Assistant. All is well in the world again!

Harbor Tower Village is so blessed to have such a wonderful and dedicated staff.. Maybe that is why our employees stay!!

Please feel free to stop by and visit with Hazel. The rst 10 people who visit Whidbey Coffee, located on highway 20 next to Wendy’s in Oak Harbor, and mention Harbor Tower’s #1 “Cheer” Leader will receive a free latte. See you at Harbor Tower Village and Whidbey Coffee.

July Events At Oak Harbor Library:

New FAX Service— By popular demand, Oak Harbor Library has added a self-service fax machine for customer use. Using a debit/credit or FaxCash card (available for sale by the Friends of the Library), library customers can follow simple instructions to send a FAX. Cost is $1.50 for the first page, $1.00 per additional page. The customer follows instructions via phone on a standalone machine; enters the card number, sends the FAX and that’s it. We have some very satisfied customers—which is always our goal.

New Hours— Oak Harbor Library has new hours of operation. Opening at 9:00 am and closing at 8:00 pm on weekdays. Weekend hours remain the same. Changes in open hours are based on public feedback and recent patterns of library use, and were developed with the goal of improving service to our community. This is not a reduction in hours; in fact we are adding one hour per week to the total. The library is open 7 days per week: Monday through Thursday 9 am-8 pm; Friday 9 am-5 pm; Saturday 10 am-5 pm and Sunday 1pm-5 pm.

Summer Reading – It’s Not Just For Kids! Whole Latte Reading Going On! Submit five book reviews online or on paper at the library, and receive a free $5 gift card for use at any Whidbey Coffee outlet. Supported by the Friends of the Oak Harbor Library. Call the library at 360-675-5115 for more information.

Digital Photography Scavenger Hunt— Meet at the library on Wednesday, July 6 at 2:00 pm. Supported by the Friends of the Oak Harbor Library, for teens and adults.

Yoga With Claudia Sámano-Losada— Thursdays, July 7 through 28, at 2:00 pm. Drop in or attend all five sessions of this free introduction to gentle yoga for teens and adults. Bring a yoga mat if you have one. Supported by the Friends of the Oak Harbor Library.

Whidbey Island Nordic Lodge Presents “Three Billy Goats Gruff” and Other Tales— Tuesday, July 26 at 1:00 & 3:00 pm. Bring the grandkids for stories, songs, dances, games and activities celebrating Nordic culture and traditions.

The Tuesday Afternoon Line Dancers have met for four years. Come join this fun class!

LINE DANCE ANNIVERSARYWith a ‘Twinkle to the Right’ and a ‘Twinkle to the Left’, the Tuesday

Afternoon Line Dancers have “Waltz Across Texas” for four years. Group leader is Jerry Scheppers with Co-leader Jean Owen. Twelve to eighteen members gather every Tuesday and most Fridays at the Oak Harbor Senior Center at 1:00 pm to practice their twinkles and other steps to the music of country songs. “Come Dance With Me”, “Achy Breaky Heart”, “Cowboy Charleston” and “Coca Cola Cowboy” are a few of their favorites. Fifty per cent of the class were beginners when it started. A few were members of the original Line Dance Class taught by Peg & Dale Johnson several years ago. Why Line Dance? “It’s fun; good exercise; helps with memory and it’s good physical and mental exercise” are some of the answers. The class is $10.00 a month-Members / $20 a month-Non-members. No partners needed
