Gee, is anyone here interested in issues of youth employment?
Yes? Really?! Well, I am shocked.
Ok, I am not shocked. However, what does often surprise me about this magnificent gathering is how many shockingly good ideas emerge from the youth leader delegates I work with, host, and meet here, during each Youth Assembly at the United Nations (YA).
We will focus this Executive Session on our more, shall we say, senior youth(!). Some of you have found jobs as young professionals, in arenas that will surely shape our current and future lives. And yet, even more of you are still searching. Many with no work at all, may be marginalized by opportunity, but rarely by lack of drive or desire.
Some youth with fast-food jobs, are seeking careers; some with specific, yet very limited, entry-level careers, are seeking increased ‘meaning’ from their daily toil. Well, with thanks to the diligent, impressive work of my team partners, Ana Maria Lebada and Beatrice Cord, I promise you a program of change, for change-makers, worldwide.
In the past twelve years of work on the YA, I have marvelled at the many social entrepreneurs who have graced our presence here. One can only hope that new social ventures will once-again emerge from this skills-building, networking event. And that they will find support that helps change the world we live in and hope to see in our collective future.
Prior to my full-time employment at Friendship Ambassadors Foundation, I spent much of my professional career in academia as a coach, advisor, and adjunct faculty member. I recall advising graduates at that time to “travel down several roads simultaneously, and one will make itself clear.” I hope this YA offers you the opportunity to travel through a variety of perspectives that focus attention on ways in which you may better contribute to the success of the 8 UN Millennium Development Goals and the emerging, post-2015 agenda for global youth development.
Once again, let the YA energize your inventive concerns. We ask you to recognize, join, and possibly even begin new social enterprises that will better your community, and the world. It is time to be Tomorrow’s Leader, Today. Welcome, now let’s get to work!
