The 2021
WHAT’S NEW IN 2021
• Lots of new items can be recycled
Winona County
• Carts must be set out for pickup by 6:00 AM
• Exactly where carts are set out for pickup is much more important
• Pickup day for Elba, Whitewater & Mt. Vernon Townships moves to Friday
• Pickup for all other routes remain the same, but names may change (A or B)
• All questions and concerns go to our new contractor ‐ Harter’s Quick Clean‐Up
To get your own personalized pickup schedule, go to the county’s homepage – www.co.winona.mn.us – and click on “Curbside Schedule” at the bottom of the page.
A Note from the Coordinator Kudos to Winona County residents! You’ve made our curbside recycling program tops in the state in participation, and we thank you. Over the years we’ve worked hard to make the program easy for you, and the changes we’re making in 2021 should build on that. Literally the only place left for us to improve is in the quality of our recycling stream. Right now the contamination rate of our recycling stream is close to 8%. We think we can cut that in half to 4%, and make our program the “cleanest” recycling stream in the state, too. Reducing contamination now will reduce our long‐term costs, so please review the “acceptable” and “unacceptable” lists inside carefully. Then, you can help your family and friends get it right too, and we all win! Anne Morse, County Recycling Coordinator
Preparing Carts
Placement Tips • Carts must be placed in a spot where it can be
emptied with the automated arm‐ drivers will not be getting out of their trucks to move carts.
• Set cart in alley instead of street, when possible. • Make sure the arrows on the cart’s lid are pointing
outward, toward the alley or street. • Cart must be at least three (3) feet from fixed
objects like mailboxes, trees, streetlights or parked vehicles, & with a three (3) foot gap between carts.
• Place carts at the end of driveway if possible, or on the boulevard within one (1) foot of the curb.
• If you have no driveway or boulevard set cart in street, with arrows facing the street.
• In rural, set cart on right side of drive (when exiting). • Position the cart on as level a surface as possible. • Lids need to be closed.
Set‐Out Time • Carts must be placed out by 6:00 a.m. • Return to storage within 24‐hrs of your collection day.
Winter Tips • Clearing snow after each snowfall will make it easier to
move your cart to its collection point. • Clear a place at your collection point so carts sit flat. • Carts will not be collected if placed on a snow bank.
Common Reasons for a Missed Pick‐Up • Cart was not placed according to the above guidelines. • Cart was set out after the designated time. • Recyclables were left outside of the cart. • Cart was over filled; lid was not closed to prevent spillage. • Cart was set out on a snow bank. • Cart contained unacceptable items like trash,
appliances, electronics, hazardous waste, etc.
