From the Baron and Baroness

As the populace is aware last month we were returned from war with news of the barony’s contributions and successes. From the St. Sebastian’s target archery shoot, the Children’s Fete, Baronial open house, having two of our target archers help win the champions war point, to the after court revel put on by the cook’s guild. We would like to thank the barony for a wonderful Pennsic. As the end of summer approaches, the calendar is once again full of events and activities, with something to tempt everyone. Please find our schedule below for the next few events. September 04- 06: For the first event of September the barony hosts our own Trial by Fire, come share Labor Day weekend with the barony. There will be something for everyone, with contests for poets (What's Cookin' theme), performers (honor residents of Mount Olympus, theme), cooks (cooking competition and the Baron’s Challenge double header with the theme of Cheese), and of course the Lochmere Arrow competition and other archery contests. September 11-13: With the newly signed Border Accords with Lochmere, please help us show the barony’s support to our nearby cousins to the south as Lochmere and Storvik hosts Battle of the Bay in their recreation of the battle of Hastings. Not a fighter no worries there will be plenty of things to do, there will be many classes available, Arts and Sciences competition for all things Norman, and a brewers competition. For those not wishing to compete, but would like to show-off their latest project or a newly learned skill, an open display will be available. October 2-4: We will be traveling to Barony of Marinus for the Coronation of Their Royal Highnesses Christoph Krieger and Adelhait Fuchs. October 14-18: We will be traveling to Elchenburg Castle in the Barony of Sacred Stone for War of the Wings. October 31: To finish out the month of October, Please join the barony as it hosts Harvest Border Wars at the Carroll County Agriculture Center in Westminster. Once again there will be something for everyone. There will be cattle and food raids, sheep and cattle toss along with many battles. There will be A&S displays and contests, children's activities and a daytime bardic circle of bone-tingling tales, not to mention a fabulous feast featuring our bounteous harvest from the Cooks Guild. As you can see once again we have a busy schedule. If you plan on attending any of these events and would like to share an hour or two of your time and help us out as a retainer please drop us a note. Also please send us any award recommendations baronial or kingdom level you might have, we want to make sure that the populace gets recognized for the things they do for this dream we all enjoy. In Your Service, Kollack and Rebecca von Zweckel, Baron and Baroness of Bright Hills

From the Chronicler September has arrived. The Jewish New Year and Fall Harvest holiday arrive this month so I will be very busy. I will also not be attending local events outside of Trial By Fire as I will be involved with these holidays and driving my daughter Natalya to college in the Kingdom of the East. A loud “Thank You,” to all those that contributed to this month’s newsletter: THL Wanda for the cover photo and the photos from the Royal Rabbit Demo, THL Katarzyna for her article on Hebrew Poetry in Spain, Lord Rhys for sharing his

I. Report of the Baronage – A lot of people have posted to the list and FaceBook that they will be attending the Royal Rabbit Demo. We had a nice showing at Pennsic. The Open House went well.

II. Officer Reports

A. Deputy Seneschal: Lady Ailis – If you are an officer and can’t make the officers’ meeting, please post this. B. Chronicler: THL Sindara Lind Rachael Fessel of the Falconshield – There was a brief mix up with my Warrant. I sent Mistress Mordryn the current Warrant which expires in 2016, and now everything is fine. During a conversation about release forms, we were alerted that Lord Jonathan, the current deputy chronicler in charge of waivers is stepping down. Lady Amanda will be taking the post next month. The kingdom chronicler is trying to get the database of releases better organized. We are getting a lot of compliments from the kingdom chronicler because we consistently have regular features, poetry and pictures in every issue.

We are in need of an A&S article for this month’s newsletter. We pictures from Pennsic from THL Aemelia, A recipe for rum balls from Lord Raven, a poem from a new member, Robertus Minimus and Katarzyna is supplying an article for the Poetry Corner. Although THL Katarzyna has volunteered to be my deputy, the officers and I feel that I need to have someone who will just be my deputy since Katarzyna already has a lot on her plate. C. Exchequer: Lady Clara – We have funds. D. Webminister: Lord Janyn Fletcher of Lancastreschire – Nothing new to report this month.

Addendum: We are presently putting up pages for Trial By Fire/Lochmere Arrow event.

E. Herald: Lady Deirdre O'Bardon – As usual the Bright Hills heralds have been busy. Several of us worked the submissions table at Pennsic, worked on local submissions and commented on other heraldic submissions. The court report for the Bright Hills Court at Pennsic was filed on time. Addendum: Our heralds are working on doing submissions and court here, in other groups, Pennsic and out of kingdom.

F. MOAS: Lady Reyne Telerius - Here’s is my report for August 2015. While I have many reports from Pennsic, I only have a few guild reports. I need to here from more guilds.

Pennsic Wars Activities Anne Jehanne Hollydaye – I ended up assisting with the live fire black powder class, taught by Erich von Kleinfeld, A.K.A. Dexter Guptill. Deirdre O’Bardon - I created and contributed subtleties for the Bright Hills Open House and for the reception following Atlantian Court. For Bright Hills, I made apple eggs, grape ants and a green pep-per bunny. For the post-Atlantian Court, I made a tree of dried apricots and candied ginger. Scholastica Joycors- I was busy at Pennsic this year. I was the Bardic Track Deputy for Pennsic University and worked closely with Lorelei Skye, the Performing Arts Dean, to recruit teachers and schedule all the classes for the bardic track. I taught a class in voice for storytellers at the Storytelling Academy and performed in the Bardic Expo and the Storytelling Expo along with being the keeper of the time for these performances. Daniela Schwartzhaupt - I taught four classes at Pennsic: Heralds & scribes oh my! – 2 students, Be-ginner gilding - 8 students, Scroll personalization without modernization – 3 students, and Armigerous scrolls without tears - 3 students. I also did scrolls for court and hosted a scribes gathering with five in attendance. J. Conrad Muni - I participated in the Commedia All-Stars event Thursday evening at Pennsic. This is a collection of performers from Commedia groups all over. My troop, Vegando Stolti, was well represented with three performers (Amanda Catherine, Derek Mulder, and myself). My character was Oratio (Or-at-zi-o) and, if you missed the show, you missed my "bump and grind"...... Canton of Green lion Bay – no report Guild Reports:

5. Cooks: Greetings to the Bright Hills Cook’s Guild and all who read this missive… The Guild met at the home of Mistress Brienna and Baron Gustav. After many tales from the Pennsic War the meeting began with a report about both the baronial Open House and the Atlantian After-Court Social. Both were well attended and gracious thanks were given to guild members from those who partook the offered fare. Both Mistress Jeanne and I thank all those who sent food items, lent their skills and time in preparing dishes, carried/schlepped all that was needed to make both evenings a success. I would still like any and everyone who did anything to send me an e-mail with their SCA and mundane names. We have decided to take a three-year hiatus before embarking on another endeavor such as the Social. There are so many other worthy groups it is only fair that they too should share in the exposure and experiences we have had. Please scan, fax or somehow get your receipts for the Social to: Mistress Jeanne [email protected]. Trial by Fire (TbF) 5 September 2015: was next to be discussed. The guild mistress reported that at least four out-of-kingdom members have sent inquiries. The rules were sent along with a welcoming e-mail. Lady Livia, the autocrat, Mistress Brienna and Baroness Wynne will be arriving Friday afternoon to begin

set-up. Anyone willing to help is most welcome. Judges: Their Excellency’s of Bright Hills, Lord Bruce Murray, (this is from information received today, 8 Aug) perhaps Their Excellency’s of Loch Mere. Mistress Brienna and Baroness Wynne are in charge of documentation. Lady Deirdre is in charge of the subtly competition. Forms: Registration and judging forms will be provided by Mistress Jeanne. Color-coded packet folios will be used to keep submissions neat and in one place. Friday Night: A BBQ dinner, provided by Lady Livia and Lord Cairell, cost is $5.00 for all you can eat, there will be other items available, donations gladly accepted. Saturday Morning: breakfast of chipped beef on biscuits, fruit and leftovers available for a small donation. Saturday Lunch is a fun-raiser for Spiaggia Leventina. Competition: begins at noon and continues until 4:00 pm. Dinner/pot luck will begin sometime after 5:00 pm, to give the judges time to judge and Their Excellency’s time for court if one is planned. Prize Baskets/Bags will be provided by the guild. These will include the traditional aprons, towels/pot holders as well as cookies stamps and vanilla extract making kits from Mistress Brienna. Mistress Jeanne is checking out books and other ideas or donations are welcome. Other Competitions: The Baron’s Challenge this year is CHEESE! The dish may be entered in both the Challenge and TbF. While the Challenge does not require documentation, I believe it garners a few points. Lady Deirdre is sponsoring a subtly competition. That is all we are responsible for, however, there promises to be many other activities for all attending not only TbF, but also the Loch Mere Arrow competition. Please check the web site for all that information http://brighthills.atlantia.sca.org/?page_id=896 Harvest Wars- 31 October 2015: Countess Rowan has had to back out of acting as head cook for Baroness Tatiana, the autocrat. Baron Gustav has graciously stepped into her shoes and will, with a deft hand, corral and heard all the guild cats into cooking up something sumptuous. The fee for feast has been set at $12.00 with 80 spaces available. We may be able to set up Friday night. More information about that will be forthcoming. Typing of said sumptuous menu, it may be altered a bit form the original. Appetizer: gourd and bread (possibly onion bread and rye or pumpernickel) First Course: Roast pork, chunky applesauce, slaw, leeks and cabbage with bacon, savory toasted cheese or Welsh rarebit. Second Course: Roast beef, eggs with mustard sauce, barley with mushrooms, carrots with ginger/orange sauce, roasted broccoli. Dessert: working the kinks out. Since we have had problems with this kitchen before (Carroll County Ag Center) Gustav has planned to visit the site to check out the kitchen. No date is planned yet. Pre-cook will take place a Wynne’s home Sunday 25 October, around 2:00 pm. Bring your aprons! Baronial Birthday-13 February 2016: We are currently taking offers/applications/bids for head cook. If you think you would like to try your hand at being head cook, please send your name in to the Guild Mistress Baroness Wynne before the next meeting (5 October, 2015). There is one candidate so far, Lady Deirdre O’Bardon. The autocrat, Chagan Bhagshe, has asked us to consider a feast featuring foods from the Celtic nations. These include Scotland, Ireland, Manx, Wales and others. More information will be coming in the near future. Kingdom Archery Competition-9 April 2016: As Lord Aidan is the current Champion, he has the responsibility to hold the next contest. We had decided to provide lunch as a fundraiser for the guild. It will be simple fare. More information to be had, when the time gets closer. The next meeting will be held during Trial by Fire, 5 September, after the food goes to the judges. F. Chatelaine: Baroness Barbara Giumaria diRoberto – The 2nd quarter report has been sent to Kingdom (late, but it's done) We have had 6 email requests for information, new and relocating folks. I have tried to forward the demo information to the reflector as I received it. Royal Rabbit is next Sat. and the Pumpkin Festival, at Christ the King is Oct. 17, in Forrest Hill. From the Stepping Stone demo, I have had a request from a home schooling group, in Harford County. No solid information, yet. At this point, I am more than 1/2 through my term as Chatelaine, and I am looking for a deputy. The paperwork is minimal for this job. Enthusiasm and the ability to talk to anyone is all that is necessary. Addendum: Lord Wrade stepped up to be Deputy Chatelaine. Baroness Barbara will put in the paperwork. G. Youth Minister: Lady Katarzyna Witkowska - The Barony sponsored a table at Children’s Fete. Over 130 robin hood hats were made and distributed. Many thanks to Lady Tatiana and Lady Joycours for cutting out the hats, and my daughter-in-law, Brigit of Bright Hills, for punching holes in about 100 of them. Also I would like to thank Countess Rowan, Lord Janyn, and Lady Aemilia Rosa for helping at the event. I will have leftovers at Trial by Fire for any younglings who would like to make a hat. A stable of fine black and white stick horses will be available for the races at Trial by Fire. We will be having a class/fun session studying cooking herbs, using a mortar and pestal to make our own take home herbal mixes, and there will be pots and seeds for the kids to plant their favorite herb and take home. I will not be at the meeting tonight because of problems with my knee and hip. I give my proxy to Her Excellency, Baroness Becky. H. Minister of Lists: Lord Alexander Fowler - No MoL activities this month. Getting ready for BH meeting tomorrow August 21 at 7pm and then some Demonstrations, and Trial by Fire on Labor Day weekend. The Artisans’ Cabinet

ELIZABETHAN LATTICE WORK NECKLACE: By Lady Sindara Lind Rachael Fessel of the Falconshield History: The use of beaded lattices or lace-like netting was seen as far back as ancient Egypt. Below are 2 examples of Egyptian beaded lattice necklaces.

In her book Bead Embroidery, Joan Evans describes Russian Mushkas containing elaborate beaded lacework which were the most prized possessions of many a lady both rich and poor. In the picture below, a network constructed of gold beads can be seen on the collar of the lady’s dress. (Sally Fox, The Medieval Woman: An Illuminated book of days)

This next picture from a medieval woman’s book of hours shows a necklace of elaborate latticework.

This next picture shows evidence of a latticework necklace from the period of the Italian Renaissance. (Max Von Boehm, Modes and Manners)

Some latticework necklaces were quite simple as seen in this 16th century picture from Elizabethan England (Janet Arnold, Queen Elizabeth’s Wardrobe Unlock’d).

Page 18: The YeomanThe YeomanThe Yeoman - The Kingdom of …

18

Some were somewhat more elaborate as seen in these next 3 pictures, the first from1463 in Hans Mamling Presentation in the temple.

The second from1605 of one of the Cholmondeley Sisters.

And this third from the same period in Spain. (Guido Gregorietti, Jewelry Through the Ages).

Queen Elizabeth I was known to adorn herself in beads and jewels. That portrait’s close ups below show 2 examples of latticework necklaces.

This 1589 portrait of Elizabeth Bridges, Lady Kennedy shows how elaborate the latticework necklace became. This method is described later in this booklet. This is the necklace that inspired me to create my entry.

Page 19: The YeomanThe YeomanThe Yeoman - The Kingdom of …

19

Beaded latticework was quite popular during the 16th and 17th centuries as seen in the pictures below,

Beaded latticework was not confined to necklaces. The pictures below show a 15th century example of the latticework worn in the hair that Joan Evans describes in her book Bead Embroidery and a portrait of an unknown Italian woman.

(1450 Portrait of a woman)

Pattern:

This picture of a necklace belonging to Princess Elizabeth before she ascended England’s throne inspired the initial pattern of the necklace.

Materials:

The materials used to make this necklace consist of pearls, gold filigree beads, and jet glass of various sizes. All of these beads were frequently seen in period.

Technique: 1) Thread a needle and knot the end. String a total of 97 beads beginning with a pearl and alternating one pearl one gold

bead. You should end with a pearl. 2) Thread a second needle and knot the end. Bring the needle through the first 20 beads and then string 5 jet beads. Count 4

beads on the top necklace row and go up through the fourth bead which should be a gold bead. Repeat this pattern until there are twenty beads on either side of the loops pattern.

3) To complete the necklace, follow the technique below using 5 bead groups instead of three.

Page 20: The YeomanThe YeomanThe Yeoman - The Kingdom of …

20

4) String three beads and bring the thread through the first three beads of the first rows. String four beads. See below.

5) Bring the thread through the first three beads of the first row and the first two beads of the loop just created. See below.

6) Repeat the pattern. String three beads and bring the thread through the sixth bead of the second row. String three beads

and bring the thread through the tenth bead. String three beads and bring the thread through the fourteenth bead. String three beads and bring the thread through the eighteenth bead. See below.

7) String four beads to turn and start the next row. Bring the thread through the sixteenth bead of row three. Continue the

pattern for the desired length. See below.

8) At the end of the lacework, tie a knot in the thread close to the end and weave the thread into the lacework. Make sure the

lacework lays flat against the fabric before couching it down. Use of different sizes and shapes of beads creates variations in the pattern. When stringing the first row, the use of a marker bead of a different color and/or size, every three beads helps with the rest of the pattern.

The Poets’ Corner

Hebrew Poetry in Spain

There were least three “Golden Ages” in Spain interrupted by periods of oppression of Jews and non-Jews. A few scholars give the start of the Golden Age as 711–718, the Muslim conquest of Iberia. Others date it from 912, under the rule of Abd-ar-Rahman III. The end of the age is widely disputed either as 1031, when the Caliphate of Cordoba ended, or 1066, the date of the Granada massacre, or 1090, when the Almoravides invaded, or the mid-12th century, when the Almohades invaded.

Page 21: The YeomanThe YeomanThe Yeoman - The Kingdom of …

21

The historian Abraham Ibn Daud tells us that members of the Jewish community in Merida were exiled to Granada. The Andalusians generally allows the Jewish people to practice their religion and live according to the laws and scriptures of their community. Furthermore, the restrictions to which they were subject were social and symbolic rather than tangible and practical in character. That is to say, these regulations served to define the relationship between the two communities, and not to oppress the Jewish population.

The Jews thrived during this time and their literature and poetry reflect their sense well being at the time. They wrote about everything from wine to the sacred Torah. We will explore several of the poets of this time and discuss their inspiration for their works. We will begin a Jewish “Prince” in Muslim and Christian Spain.

Samuel ibn Naghrillah (Hebrew: שמואל הלוי בן יוסף הנגיד , Sh'muel HaLevi ben Yosef HaNagid; Arabic: أبو إسحاق إسماعيل بن .Shmuel HaNagid, lit , שמואל הנגיד :Abu Iṣḥāq Ismā‘īl bin an-Naghrīlah), also known as Samuel HaNagid (Hebrew النغريلةSamuel the Prince) was a well-known medieval Hebrew poet born in 993. He was also a Talmudic scholar, grammarian, philologist (linguist with a love of words), soldier, politician, and a patron of the arts. He lived in Iberia at the time of the Moorish rule. He was perhaps the most politically influential Jew in Muslim Spain. He was fluent in both Hebrew and Arabic. His example is used to support the Golden Age theory of Jewish life under Muslim rule.

Samuel ibn Naghrillah fled Córdoba in 1013 when Berbers took the city during the war with the Amirid Kingdom. He then set up a spice shop in Granada near the palace of the vizier. The vizier met Samuel ibn Naghrillah when his maid servant began to ask Naghrillah to write letters for her. As a result of this relationship, Naghrillah was given the job of a tax collector, then a secretary, and finally an assistant vizier of state to the Berber king Habbus al-Muzaffar. When Habbus died in 1038, Samuel ibn Naghrillah made certain that King Habbus’ second son, Badis, succeeded him, because Badis was more favored by the people (including the Jews) than his older brother. In return for his support, Badis made Samuel ibn Naghrillah his vizier and top general. It was rare for a Jew to hold such a high public office. He was the highest ranking Jewish courtier in all of Spain, and he took on the title of nagid, or Prince in 1027. The fact that a Jew would command the Muslim army was an astonishing feat.

He was known as “The Nagid” and became the leader of Spanish Jewry around the late 1020s and promoted the benefits of the Jewish people through actions such as the promotion Jewish learning. He purchased copies of the Mishnah and the Talmud. He gave a scholarship to those who wanted to study the Torah for a living.

In the Granada court there was a continuous rivalry for power and influence among the king’s underlings. Since Samuel was the only Jew in a high position over Moslems, Berbers, and Slavs he was very exposed to this jockeying for position. He wrote several poems about these tensions that he had to endure in the service of the king (the Translations below were done by Leon J. Weinberger).

At Court

Does your king anger you with bitter words and evil deeds And you hope that he has turned from his wrath? But can the wisest of men break an earthen jar And guarantee that he will once again put together the shreds?

The Monarch’s Favors

A monarch will not favor you unless he hopes to be At ease while you labor and exert yourself in his service. You are caught in his tongs: With one hand he brings you into The flames,--while protecting you from the fire which with both hands he sets against you.

Dread the King

Dread your great king whether he be resting or scolding And fear his wrath both in your own home or in the gates. He is pacified like a child; he rages like a boor.

Page 22: The YeomanThe YeomanThe Yeoman - The Kingdom of …

22

He will strike you and laugh; he will slay and not care. His anger is like a blazing fire consuming the trees of the forest.

He Promotes the Clowns

Fickleness in a king is like that of a drunkard He is appeased when he should be angry; he is wroth when he out to be forgiving. Occasionally he exalts the wise, though more often He humbles them and promotes the clowns.

We will look at more of The Nagid’s poetry next month. Lady Katarzyna Witkowska
