Message from the RabbiDear Friends,

A new year is upon us and it is not just any year that is approaching. The Hebrew year 5782 will be the Sabbatical year in Israel - the Shmita. This is a year in which all farmers are instructed to leave the land of Israel fallow and to let it grow organically - not for profit.

Why does the Torah make such a seemingly burdensome requirement and so often in the agricultural cycle - every seven years? This mitzvah has the capacity to derail an entire economy!

The Rav Meir Leibush Wisser, the Malbim, makes a fascinating observation. Every seven days the Torah commands us and all of our families and livestock to rest. Every Sabbath we are required to stop and take stock. But what about the land? Can the land which has already been plowed, tilled, cultivated and watered for six days, suddenly grind to a stop and rest? It cannot. The inertia of all the cultivation must continue naturally. That means that although humans and animals get to stop and rest 52 days a year, the land misses that opportunity. The land has a deficit of 52 rest days per year, and after 2 years, it will have accumulated 104 days and after 3 years 156 days of missed rest. If one keeps tally, one finds that after 7 years, the land has missed out on a sum total of 365 days of rest which humans and animals had. What Shmita is, is an accumulation of those 365 missed days are grouped together in the form of a sabbatical year in which the land gets to ‘catch up’ on its missed rest.

There is a deep lesson to be learned from this pattern. Some types of rest are cumulative. It is not sufficient to have a little break here and a small respite there. One needs a significant amount of time in one chunk to re-evaluate one’s life and to recalibrate.

That is the goal of this upcoming year 5782. It is especially needed after the last year and a half. We need a little respite to evaluate our lives. YILC continues to expand and offer our community new opportunities in learning and personal growth while grappling with the real issues facing our community and nation.

Thank you to all the many people who have ensured that this shul continues to be the vibrant center of Tefila, Torah, activism, social connection and safe haven for our community.

May this year bring with it health and respite.

Warmest regards.Rabbi Ya’akov Trump

Message from our Youth Director Dear wonderful YILC youth families,

We hope you all had an enjoyable summer. We feel proud of all the amazing programs and events that we ran for our youth this past year. Thanks to our wonderful parents we were able to keep the events consistent, safe, and most of all FUN.

In addition to our legendary back yard groups, jammed ballroom avos ubanim, and our inspirational bat mitzvah program we even introduced new programming. Sunday morning Mommy and Me, Morah Bashi came to entertain our parents and toddlers with music and activities. Our youth were involved in creating an amazing Pesach booklet about the Ten plagues that was distributed to our entire community before the holiday. Erev Shavuos we held a fun cupcake decorating program “Shavuos style” followed by music and storytime with our very own Morah Fraida Leba Levine. This particular program was created to ensure that all age groups were fully engaged in our comprehensive youth Shavuos programming that has been the focal point of the 5 Towns community for many years. To top it all off we ended the year on a high with an incredible end of year carnival held in the shul parking lot, run by all our group leaders.

We are looking forward to an exciting and fun year ahead iy”H.

Starting off the year with great news - Coming off the heels of the biggest Bat Mitzvah program last year, we will once again offer our annual program this coming fall - dates to be announced. And we look forward to a return to robust Sukkos Chol Hamoed trips and entertainment too!

We are so excited to announce our new but familiar addition to YILC’s youth department - Rachel Sandler who has spent this past year in Israel will return to YILC us as the Assistant Youth Director. We are so happy to have her back.

So much of our past years success was due to the support and ideas from you - the parents. Please always feel free to share your feedback and ideas with us.

Follow us on Instagram @YILCyouth to see what we are up to and upcoming events.

Wishing you all a shana tova, a year of good health,

Youth Group LeadersZACHARY BACH: I’m 19 years old and I attend Queens college. My favorite sport is hockey and I was the captain in high school for the HAFTR

HAWKS. I have been a group leader at YILC for many years now and I love my job. I enjoy playing and teaching all different kinds of sports with the children of YILC. I also enjoy other various activities such as board games and parsha questions with the kids.

SHAYNA KASS: I'm a junior at HAFTR high school and I live in Cedarhurst. My favorite thing to do when I’m on my own is to read a good

book. I’m a group leader in the youngest division. I first became a group leader in my Freshman year. However, I have worked with younger kids since I was twelve, and have always loved it.

KAYLA MERRILL: My favorite thing to do is play sports and hang out with my friends. I love being a group leader because I love playing games with

the kids and seeing them smile. I’ve worked at YILC for around three years and it has been such a fun experience.

ESTHER MAEL: I live in Lawrence and I am 20 years old. I enjoy baking and spending time with my friends. I love being a group leader because I

get to spend time and build relationships with the girls every shabbos! Whether we play a game or just chat every week is so much fun. There’s always something fun and exciting going on in the YILC youth department!

EMMA PINE: I love working at groups. My hobbies include dancing, baking, and playing soccer. I love coming to groups every week and

seeing the cute little kids that come in excited to share about their week.

ZACHARY SICKLICK: I'm a senior in Rambam Mesivta. I live in Lawrence and I love to play sports. I am on the Rambam basketball, football, and

softball team. I love to be a group leader because I love to help out our community and want to make sure that kids can have a fun time on Shabbos.

RACHEL SANDLER: I’m 19, and I like sports and art. I started coming to groups when I was 8 and I love all the friends I made and all the fun activities

YILC youth had. I can’t wait to give your kids the same amazing experience. This past year I learned in Israel at Midreshet Tehilla. It was an amazing experience and I grew so much and would love to pass on some of the things I learned to your kids. Can’t wait for an amazing year at the best shul ever!!

ISABELLA STIEGLITZ: I love being a group leader! I love coming into shul each week and seeing all the smiles on the kids’ faces, and hearing all about their weeks. My

favorite thing to do is to cook and bake!

MEIRA WEISS: I live in Lawrence and I’m going to be a sophomore at SKA this year. My favorite thing to do is art and spend time with my

family and friends. I’m a group leader for the youngest group and I really love working with little kids.

Dear Friends,

We hope everyone had a healthy and enjoyable summer. The YILC sisterhood is very proud of all the programming and events we were able to coordinate this past year despite the unique challenges involved and we are gearing up for another action packed year. We have been very busy planning many exciting programs.

As you know the sisterhood is always bringing new and innovative programming to our members. We bring you shiurim, book clubs, cooking classes, and blood drives. We sponsor many of the youth department programs as well as programs for our older population.

Prime Time for Seniors has been ongoing with interesting speakers and workshops presented via Zoom. We are hopeful that we can resume this program in person in October. In addition to our fabulous speakers, a light lunch will be served. Our annual pre-Thanksgiving bake sale and boutiques are just around the corner and we look forward to another great turnout this fall. Our Mishloach Manot program continues to be a popular fundraiser. Last year we distributed beautiful shabbos themed food and gift packages. We thank the many members who participated and we are already working on this year’s gift basket which promises to be very unique as well.

We have teamed up with the Gural JCC “the Shop” to collect necessary food items for their pantry which they distribute to people in need throughout the Five Towns community. We are so proud that YILC spearheaded this project. It has been so successful that it has now grown to include other local Shuls in our area.

Opportunities for chesed abound. If you would like to volunteer to help out with any of our programs please reach out to us. Your participation is what makes all of our programming so successful.
