A BRIEF STATEMENT OF FAITH

We trust in Jesus Christ,

fully human, fully God.

Jesus proclaimed the reign of God:

preaching good news to the poor

and release to the captives,

teaching by word and deed

and blessing the children,

healing the sick

and binding up the brokenhearted,

eating with outcasts,

forgiving sinners,

and calling all to repent and believe in

the gospel.

In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit,

we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks

and to live holy and joyful lives,

even as we watch for God’s new heaven

and new earth,

praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!”

You are the Messiah

Although Peter and the disciples have it right – Jesus is indeed the Messiah – they

still want to dictate the definition of the term. They want to follow Jesus, they really

do. But here Jesus seems intent on taking a path in the opposite direction of where

they want to go. Jesus knew that to be the Messiah (a Hebrew term meaning the

anointed one; Christ in the Greek language) was to suffer and die, to take on the

sorrows of the world so as to unmake them from the inside out. That’s why Peter

rebukes Jesus for his negative talk. “You won‘t win any political campaigns with

that kind of talk, Master.” Well, of course. Jesus had come to reveal a new world –

a world that would come only through sacrifice and love, through suffering and

death, through service and humility. Welcome to worship this fourth Sunday in Lent!

Welcome! Your children are welcome to join us in worship today. For parents who wish to use it, childcare is provided for infants and preschoolers in the church nursery and staffed by loving volunteers. When they are ready, we gladly welcome your children to all worship services. We understand in doing so we are fulfilling part of our promise to nurture these little ones in the faith. Children learn best by observing and participating. Parents can explain and model worship for their children when they bring them to worship. Thanks again for joining us in worship today.
