EDITEDITEDITEDITEDITORIAL COMMENTORIAL COMMENTORIAL COMMENTORIAL COMMENTORIAL COMMENT

Despite the travel chaos, over 416,000 visitors did make itto Munich by the end of the show. But many expectedvisitors, and quite a number of exhibitors, simply could notget there – especially from America and Asia. That was areal shame as there was so much to see at what, in myestimation, was the best Bauma yet.

A big topic of conversation at the show was Liebherr’sbig stand with its new two storey building on stiltssurrounded by so many large machines. The result wasimpressive and, after the unprecedented economicdownturn experienced by the industry, this upbeat stanceprovided a welcome visual indication of optimism. Apictorial feature showing the Liebherr stand is included inthis issue.

The Liebherr family are to be congratulated for staging such a show of strength. Whilst some observersquestioned the wisdom of constructing such a large structure, Liebherr stressed its practicality and reusability. What many visitors did not know is that the steelwork of the modular stand structure was built at the Liebherrfactory at Biberach, Germany – to keep its workers busy at a time of greatly reduced demand for the towercranes that are usually made there. So the company was both able to retain its skills base and get a valuableresource which can be so effectively used at both future Baumas and other events.

There were so many new machines at Bauma that most of this issue of CP&E is devoted to a major review ofthe show. Amongst the notable product launches included in this coverage are the fascinating double jib towercrane from the GG Crane Group and the innovative CTE vehicle mounted access platform with its high levelslewing ring.

Fuel saving and emissions reductions are hot topics and there were a notable number of electric and hybridmachines on show. Mainly displayed as prototypes, they showed how design thinking is advancing.

The general feeling was that, whilst trading conditions are still difficult in many countries, the worst of theglobal downturn might be over. Business remains buoyant in China and prospects in Brazil and India are lookingbetter.

Bolstered up by their success at home, a significant number of Chinese construction equipmentmanufacturers were showing their wares at Bauma. But machines from three Far Eastern manufacturers had tobe covered up or removed from the show after allegations were made of product copying and patent breaches. This high profile action happened after JCB successfully applied for court orders in Germany and preliminaryinjunctions were served against exhibitors who it alleged were showing backhoe loaders and telehandlers thatinfringed its intellectual property rights.

The industry will be watching developments with great interest. Certainly there needs to be a level playingfield and equipment manufacturers which spend millions on research and development must be able to havetheir innovative designs legally protected worldwide. Any blatant copying of another company’s products, wherever it might occur, is wrong and should not be allowed.

Whilst some companies stood accused of copying existing products, others displayed their original designthinking for the machines of the future. Both Doosan and Volvo showed scale models of futuristic machines.Such action is to be applauded.

Hopefully, as industry optimism increases, we might actually see fascinating concept machines in the metalagain - like the O&K Futura excavator seen at a Bauma in the past!

It has sold the UK rentalcompany Hewden to the private equity group Sun EuropeanPartners for £110.2 million.

Finning originally purchased Hewden, one of the UK’slargest rental companies, in December 2000 for £400 million. At the time there was much speculation that the businessmight be renamed the Cat Rental Store but this neverhappened. In subsequent years sections of the business –notably tower cranes, hoists and small tools were sold – andnow, after financial strain due to the recession, Finning hassold Hewden.

Mike Waites, the President and Chief Executive Officer ofFinning International Inc, says, “After a comprehensive review, we have determined that, for strategic and financialreasons, it is in our shareholders' best interest to divest Hewden. Owning a large, short-term rental business operatingseparately from our UK dealership does not now align with our strategic objectives. This sale is a continuation of ourjourney towards a new Finning and the final step in rationalising our UK operations.”

Hewden has 63 locations and 1,300 employees in the UK. Sun European Partners plans to work with the existingHewden management team which includes Director Kevin Parkes. Hewden’s commercial centre in Manchester willbecome its new head office.

Kevin Parkes says the Hewden brand is strong and is well positioned to benefit from the economic recovery.Finning previously used Hewden to provide a rental route to market for Caterpillar machines and Kevin Parkes saysthat ‘a very robust strategic alliance, has been agreed between Sun and Finning but that there is no firm obligation tobuy Caterpillar products. Greater flexibility with machine purchase will help Hewden to serve long-term rentalcustomers who express particular brand preferences.

Whilst Finning clearly hopes to continue selling significant volumes of Caterpillar machinery to Hewden in thefuture, not owning Hewden should help it sell more equipment to other UK hire companies. The UK is one of thelargest rental markets in the world and most manufacturers prefer to sell to the many rental companies there ratherthan compete against them.

Finning International has sold the big UK rental companyHewden to the private equity group Sun European

Partners so that it can concentrate on its Caterpillardistribution business.

Whilst acknowledging that the worldwide economic crisis hasnot yet been overcome, the privately-owned Liebherrcompany – with brother and sister Willi and Isolde Liebherr atthe helm - set out to stimulate further recovery at Bauma withthis most impressive stand. They said that their presentationat Bauma should be regarded as a sign of optimism. Whilstmany visitors questioned the cost, Liebherr contended thatthe new raised space made more effective use of itsexhibition plot and, as it was utilised by seven large groupcompanies, it was much more cost effective than havingseparate stands.

Looking down onLiebherr’s newarchitectdesigned standfrom the manbasketsuspended froma 630 EC-H 40Litronic towercrane. The standbuilding has beendesigned as amodular structurefor re-use atfuture Baumasand also, insmaller sections,at other events. The structure, with its manymeeting rooms, provided anefficient base forthe more than1,200 Liebherrpersonnelmanning thestand.

The massive T282B rigid dumptruck onone corner of the large Liebherr standwas a big draw for visitors. Shipped infrom the USA especially for the show –and being returned afterwards – themining truck has an unladen weight of237 tonnes and it can carry a maximumpayload of 363 tonnes. Engine optionsfor this monster truck include a 3000kW(4023hp) MTU or a 2610kW (3500hp)Cummins. The machine features anadvanced Liebherr drive system withIGBT frequency inverters.

Liebherr traditionally has the biggeststand at Bauma and this year was noexception. However, at a time when someother companies reduced the scale oftheir stands, Liebherr chose to build anew, more imposing two storey stand onstilts and surround it with a spectaculardisplay of products including some verylarge machines. Here CP&E pictoriallyrecords the stand that was …..

This large 1250 HC 50 towercrane dominated one end ofthe Liebherr stand. More athome building a large damthan being a show exhibit, this impressive crane has amaximum capacity of 50tonnes. The crane can beerected to have a maximumheight under hook of 79.0mand have a maximum radiusof 81.0m. Although displayedwith shorter tower and jib atMunich, this crane still lookedimpressive. Its big section(5.5m x 5.5m) tower wasused to provide the supportfor steelwork to allow aworking demonstration of theinternal climbing of a smallerEC-B tower crane.

Amongst the bigcranes displayed byLiebherr were two1200 tonne capacitytelescopics – a truckmounted LTM11200-9.1 and a crawler mounted LTR11200. Thebiggest lattice boom crawler crane on displaywas the 600 tonne capacity LR1600/2-W, whichwas seen supporting the 10.0m high main hookblock from Liebherr’s forthcoming 3000 tonnecapacity LR13000 crawler crane. This hookblock weighs 110 tonnes and the new machinewhich will carry it is now being assembled for thefirst time at the Liebherr factory at Ehingen,Germany.

The new 45 tonne LTC1045-3.1 all terrain crane wasdisplayed at Bauma in a distinctive black livery. Thisthree axle ‘city crane’ has a 36.0m main telescopic boomand an innovative single control cab. For road travel, thecab is extended forwards and downwards from thecrane superstructure to rest on the front nearside cornerof the 6x6 carrier. As could be seen at Bauma, the cabcan be hydraulically raised to provide the crane operatoran elevated view of lifting operations. Maximum height ofthe operator’s eyes when the cab is fully raised is 7.8m.

Working demonstrations were being given of the simple, self-erection capability of the new 81K tower crane. This machinehas a maximum lifting capacity of 6.0 tonnes and it can lift 1.4tonnes at a maximum radius of 45.0m. Maximum height underhook is 40.4m. This crane is claimed to be the first in its class tooperate only with a two-fall hook block. It has a Micromovemode that reduces the hoisting speed to 25% of the maximumfor the precise placing of heavy loads.

Amongst a sizeable number of new machines for materialshandling was a new version of the L580 2plus2 wheelloader specially configured for the timber industry. The newL580 2plus2 LogHandler was displayed at Bauma with a3.2m³ capacity timber grapple and a hydraulicallyretractable log pusher. With this equipment, the machinehas a service weight of some 34.5 tonnes and its payloadis 8470kg.

The new R924 CompactTunnel excavator wasshown inside a mocktunnel to illustrate itsability to operate withina confined space. The32.4 tonne short tailmachine is powered bya 130kW (176hp)Liebherr diesel engineand can use its fullcrowd length of 2.4m atonly 5.5m workingheight. This specialistexcavator can be usedwith a ripper bucket, hydraulic breaker or, asdisplayed at Bauma, apowerful rotary millingcutter.

As was predicted in previous issues of CP&E, Liebherr used Bauma to unveil the first of its new lineof articulated dumptrucks. Nick Johnson reports on the new TA230 Litronic.

Liebherr reveals first of new ADT rangeIt has been an open secret for many years that Liebherr has been developing a range of articulated dumptrucks(ADTs) and, at this Bauma, the first of the new line was unveiled. This turned out to be the TA230 Litronic which hasa payload of 30 tonnes – rather than a higher capacity 50 tonner that will appear later.

Having been an advocate of hydrostatic transmissions in machines such as wheel loaders and bulldozers, Liebherrwas tipped to introduce this drive system in its new ADTs. However, after extensive field tests with hydrostaticprototypes, Liebherr has decided to launch the TA230 with a standard drive train.

According to Liebherr, it has found that hydrostatic drive is not an optimal solution in ADTs for standardearthmoving. But the company considers that hydrostatic drive does offer great advantages for these machines in very

hard conditions and it is still developing the concept.

Rental route to marketThe new TA230 Litronic articulated dumptruck is being manufactured at theLiebherr factory in Kirchdorf/Iller, Germany. The new model line will initiallybe available as an addition to the equipment rental fleet of the Europe-wideLiebherr-Mietpartner organisation (where Bell ADTs can currently be found). This will allow potential customers to evaluate the new ADTs on site withoutan obligation to buy.

The programme of Liebherr ADTs will soon be extended to include twomore models with payloads of 40 and 50 tonners. The intermediate machinewill appear next.

Liebherr contends that the TA230 combines the compact transportdimensions of a 25 tonne payload machine with the payload of the next-higher category. The machine’s transport width is a slim 2960mm but its skipcapacity is a high 19.2m³ - claimed to be the largest in its class.

The TA230 is powered by a 10.5 litre Liebherr D936LA6 water-cooled 6-cylinder turbocharged engine. This proven engine, which meets the StageIIIA / Tier 3 emissions requirements, is the same type as that used in the

Liebherr Group Proprietor Willi Liebherr has confidently introduced the newTA230 as part of a policy to broaden the product range despite the recession.

company’s L566, L576 and L580 wheel loaders and its R/A944 andR/A954 excavators.

ZF powershift transmissionThe drive train in the TA230 incorporates a ZF electronically controlled, automatic powershift transmission and torque converter with lock-upclutch. The machine has eight forward gears (allowing a maximum travelspeed of 57km/h) and four reverse gears (with speed limitedelectronically to 16km/h).

For the axles and brakes on this 6x6 ADT, Liebherr has sourcedKessler components. The rocker arm style front axle has two hydro-pneumatic cushioning cylinders to provide front suspension and there isa self-locking transverse differential. The heavy-duty rear axles haveself-locking transverse differentials with a lock value of 40%.

The TA230 has an oil-cooled wet brake system acting on the frontand centre axles. There is also an engine brake and a transmissionretarder that acts on all wheels. The parking brake is a spring applied(hydraulically released) disc brake which acts on the driveshaft to therear axles.

The ROPS/FOPS cab features closed pressure ventilation andprovides good visibility through its large area tinted safety glasswindows. To allow service access underneath, the cab can be tiltedelectro-hydraulically 45° to the right.

Rear view camera image in cabThe operator gets a fully adjustable seat and there is a well-positionedtouch screen display console. This display can show the image suppliedby the reversing camera, which is standard equipment, or actualtemperatures, engine speed, air conditioning settings, time display, number of dumping operations or daily operating hours.

The TA 230, like all Liebherr machines, reflects the Group’s policy ofmanufacturing components in-house for the key technologies. Thereforeit utilises Liebherr hydraulic cylinders for steering the truck and tippingits body.

Additionally, the machine’s electronics incorporate a large number ofmodules manufactured in-house. These include the central machinecomputer, the I/O units and the built-in service and diagnostic systems.

The TA230 displayed at Bauma was equipped with the optionaltailgate. This automatically rises up to allow a clean discharge of thebody. The maximum tipping angle is 70° and the body lifts in 12seconds and lowers in eight seconds.

The new ADT comes as standard with 23.5R25 earthmoving radialtyres. Special 750/65R25 tyres are available as an option. The machinehas two dual acting steering cylinders that allow the front of the truck tobe articulated 45º to either side. Oscillation is provided by a Liebherr ballbearing ring.

Whilst the articulated dumptruck market has been depressed due tothe global economic crisis, Liebherr is determined to enter what hasbeen a very competitive market with some very long established players.Placing the initial units with its rental partners is a logical move and it willbe interesting to see how this may eventually lead to end user sales asthe business climate improves.

As Liebherr has proved to be good at engineering its products toaddress niche markets, it would be logical for different versions of thismachine to appear in the future. The obvious development would be ahook lift body to handle the containers used for waste. [CP&E]

As well as all its previously announced Bauma launches, JCB used the exhibition to preview its newgeneration of 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders. Nick Johnson checks out their new features.

It is theproduct that got the UKconstruction equipment makerestablished and helped turn itinto an international business.Today JCB claims to sell two inevery five of the backhoeloaders sold anywhere in theworld and, to protect thisposition of strength, it about tointroduce an upgraded design.

The new generation JCB3CX and 4CX backhoe loaderswere revealed at Bauma andthe improved designs are due togo into production this summer. At the reveal in Munich, TimBurnhope, JCB’s GroupManaging for ProductDevelopment and CommercialOperations, highlighted theemphasis on fuel savingfeatures that have beenincorporated into their design.

Visually the new models are distinguished by not only the company’s new machine branding but also a re-styledfront counterweight and grill with vertical pressings. There is also a distinctive new slim line roof design and enhancedlighting package. Sharper lines on the excavator and loader profiles contribute to a modern, robust appearance.

Better protected front endThe new front counterweight and sloping grill have been designed to better protect the machine from front-end impactdamage. The grill also allows increased airflow for engine cooling and the design allows for the use of a Tier 4 engine. The bonnet is now self-raising and it provides better and easier service access.

Revisions to the cab include independently adjustable working lights at the front and rear, improved rainwater run-off channels in the roof (to prevent water collection) and the option of a heated front screen to quickly clear mistingand frost. JCB has adopted a black interior in the lower half of the cab (including the seat) while the pillars and rooflining are a lighter grey and the redesigned steering wheel has a new covering for better grip.

However, the most significant changes are under the skin of the new generation 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders. The new features include an improved hydraulic system for moreeconomical digging and there are new power brakes with anautomotive feel.

The machines utilise a new EcoDig hydraulic system with three(rather than two) hydraulic pumps to provide the same hydraulicoutput but at lower engine speeds. This arrangement is claimed todeliver average fuel savings of up to 15%. Operators are able toselect from two working modes, either Eco mode or low flow, tooptimise productivity and improve machine control.

A secondary benefit of the three-pump design is fasterperformance of the Extradig extending dipper stick, furtherboosting productivity. The new hydraulic system and lower engine

The cab on the new 3CX has independently adjustableworking lights at the front and rear and improvedrainwater run-off channels in the roof.

speeds also contribute to a cut in exhaustemissions and a reduction in overallmachine noise levels, both inside the caband externally.

EcoRoad and SRS boostto productivityThe new backhoes come with the existingEcoRoad options of Smooth Ride System(SRS) and TorqueLock to help boostproductivity still further. TorqueLock is saidto reduce fuel consumption by up to 25%while increasing speed by up to 10% andthe Smooth Ride System maximises loadretention around site for increasedproductivity and operator comfort.

Power brakes are to be introduced onboth the new generation 3CX and 4CXmodels. The system provides proportional braking throughout the pedal travel, providing operators with improvedbraking and reduced effort.

JCB has also redesigned the pedal box in the backhoe loader cab, with an automotive style position that improvesergonomics. The power brake design ensures that there is full brake pad release when the driver comes off the pedal. This enables operators to better maintain roading speeds and contributes to a further 1% saving in fuel consumption.

By using the machine’s hydraulic system to supply oil for the power brakes, there is no requirement for separatebrake reservoirs. This simplifies service and reduces the number of daily checks for the driver.

Enhanced pushing and hill climb performanceJCB’s EcoRoad package of options adds to the enhanced productivity. The return-to-dig feature automatically resetsthe loader bucket to dig position, saving time and effort; the transmission disconnect diverts hydraulic power to theloader for faster lifting, while the Hydraulic Speed Control (HSC) gives more tractive effort when loading. In addition, high engine torque at low revs enhances pushing and hill climbing performance whilst the limited slip differentials(LSD) provide extra traction in challenging conditions.

To aid operation in cold winter weather, the cab gets a heated front screen – said to be an industry first on abackhoe loader. The operator can also be warmed up if the machine has been purchased with the new option of anintegrated hot drinks machine. This extra is the modern equivalent of the in-cab electric kettle originally offered as anextra by JCB founder Joe Bamford back in 1964 when he launched the 3D backhoe loader!

A new combined hammer and bidirectional auxiliary circuit on the new 3CX and 4CX backhoes makes the fittingof attachment power circuits easier. The circuit has been designed to provide low flow and high flow on both fixed andextending dipper variants. There is also the option of a new 9.0m hose reel on the Hand Held Tool Circuit, that allowscontractors to use hydraulic power tools alongside the backhoe loader, removing the need for separate power packs.

A new attachment option for the rear backhoe is a trencher supplied to JCB by Auger Torque. At Bauma thistrencher was displayed on the dipper arm ofa 4CX Super Sitemaster. Alongside thisexhibit was a beautifully preserved exampleof one of its JCB’s original backhoe loadersdating from 1953. Tim Burnhope says, “JCBhas been at the forefront of backhoe loadersdesign for almost 60 years. Now, whetherloading, roading or digging, our latestgeneration models offer the customer amachine that works harder but uses lessfuel.” [CP&E]

Having originally revealed a pre-production Dash 9 excavator at Conexpo two years ago, Hyundaiused this Bauma to internationally launch a full line of these new generation machines as well assimilarly upgraded wheel loaders. Nick Johnson reports.

Hyundai showcases Dash 9 excavatorsand loadersThe desire of the South Koreancompany Hyundai to become a muchbigger player, the constructionequipment sector was evident atBauma where its stand provided theinternational launch pad for many newgeneration machines. These includednot only the full Dash 9 excavator lineas expected but also pre-productionversions of new Dash 9 wheel loaders.

Hyundai first revealed its Dash 9plans at the Conexpo exhibition in LasVegas during March 2008 when a pre-production R210LC-9 trackedexcavator was on show. Intermat inParis last year saw the pre-productionversions of new R16-9 and R27Z-9mini excavators – a significant move asit showed Hyundai was developing itsown compact excavators to replaceunits previously sourced from Naganoin Japan.

The switch of larger Hyundai excavators from Dash 8 to Dash 9 has taken longer than originally envisaged due tothe dramatic reduction in sales volumes experienced by all construction equipment makers in the last couple of years. It took time to work through stocks of Dash 8 models but now Hyundai is looking forward and its new Dash 9machines show the way.

World’s largest ship builderInterestingly, construction equipment only represents 8.9% of the turnover of Hyundai Heavy Industries. But this is abig group which has become the world’s largest ship builder and gains other significant chunks of its turnover fromoffshore and engineering activities as well as electrical systems.

Hyundai Heavy Industries created its construction equipment division in 1985. Now (excluding China) it claims tobe 6th place in the world market for both crawler excavators and wheel loaders. The company makes constructionequipment not only in its native South Korea but also in China and India and a new production plant is currently beingconstructed in Brazil.

China now the largest slice (48%) of Hyundai’sconstruction equipment turnover, with South Koreasecond (18%), Europe third (6%), North Americafourth (3%) and India fifth (2%). The company’sconstruction equipment range mainly includeshydraulic excavators and wheel loaders but it alsomakes skid steer loaders and it recently introducedtwo backhoe loaders in Korea – one HB90 centremount model and one HB100 side shift model.Hyundai is also a large producer of industrial forklifts.

The new Hyundai range of Dash 9 excavators includes this21 tonne wheeled materials handler – the R210W-9 MH.

The new 21 tonne R210LC-9 trackedexcavator has the latest cab design and

the patented Posi-Nega hydraulic system.

Hyundai has entered the demolitionexcavator market with this 58-59 tonne

R520LC-9 DM that reaches up to 26.15m.

The pre-production Dash 9 Hyundai wheelloaders at Bauma included this TL versionof the HL740-9 with parallel lift arms.

The Hyundai backhoe loaders are not yet available in Europe so thefocus of the company’s Bauma stand was the Dash 9 excavators andwheel loaders. Now armed with its new generation machines andexpectations of a more positive market, Hyundai hopes to sellapproximately 1100 items of construction equipment in Europe –roughly equal to 2003 levels. Last year sales were some 750 – a bigdrop from the 2007 peak of 3200.

Product Engineer Joacim Van de Perre says that customercomments have played a major part in developing the previous 7-Aseries machines. The new Dash 9 models have been designed toreduce fuel consumption, improve operator comfort and controllability.

The excavators gain a new LED display with a big toggle switch thatallows the operator to easily select different functions. The display canshow the view from the machine’s rear view camera, as well asallowing the selection of power and work modes. The system allowsmaintenance checks, fault diagnostics and theft protection.

Cummins and Mitsubishi enginesThe standard sized Dash 9 excavators weighing over 19.0 tonnes haveCummins engines whilst some of the 13 to 19 tonners have Mitsubishipower units. A feature of the 21-25 tonne models is a new patented‘Posi-Nega’ hydraulic system said to combine the controllability benefits of a sophisticated ‘positive’ system with theservicing benefits of a technically less complex ‘negative’ system.

With the Posi-Nega system the boom up and arm in movements (where the best response time is required) arepositively controlled with pilot pressure influencing pump regulation. Other operations are negatively controlledwhereby the hydraulic flow through the main control valve influences pump regulation.

The range of tracked Dash 9 excavators now includes a new 14.6 tonne short tail model. This R145LCR-9 has an89.0kW (119hp) Mitsubishi D04FD-TAA engine and it can dig down to 5.5m.

The biggest Hyundai tracked excavator is the 51.0 tonne R520LC-9 and this is now also available as a DMdemolition machine. Weighing around 58.0 tonnes, the new R520LC-9 DM has a tilting cab, a retractableundercarriage and a special four-piece demolition boom that provides a maximum vertical reach of 26.15m. Thismachine is powered by a 266.0kW (357hp) Cummins QSM 11 engine.

Wheeled materials handler with elevating cabAs well as entering the demolition excavator market, Hyundai has added a 21 tonne wheeled materials handler. TheR210W-9MH features four stabilisers, an elevating cab and a special straight boom and curved arm to provide amaximum lift height of 12.2m and a maximum outreach of 10.8m. The machine at Bauma was equipped with a multi-tine grab from Arden Equipment.

The pre-production Dash 9 wheel loaders at Bauma were the models HL740-9 (2.4m³ bucket class), HL757-9(2.8m³), HL760-9 (3.3m³), HL770-9 (4.2m³) and HL780-9 (5.4m³). These machines all feature the latest Tier 3compliant Cummins common rail fuel injection engines and fully automatic ZF transmissions with 4-step mode

selection. The Dash 9 loaders gain an updated Rexroth

hydraulic system with a new variable displacementpump and automatic load sensing. The operatorgets a new dashboard and the ability to select Eco,Standard or Power operating modes and Manual,Auto-Light, Medium or Heavy transmission modes.

Field tests with an HL757-9 have revealed fuelsaving of 10-15% compared to a similar sized Dash7A machine. Prototype testing and field trials havebeen completed and the first production Dash 9wheel loaders are due to be released to the marketlater this year. [CP&E]

When ‘Hybrid’ mode is selected, the Eco-Handler’s diesel engine runs atidle and is available on demand either to provide direct power or to charge thebattery. The system cleverly chooses the method of greatest efficiency and leastemissions. Power can be applied solely to the driveline or split between thedriveline and the machine’s hydraulics – with any excess power used to rechargethe battery.

By selecting the ‘Full Electric’ mode, the diesel engine is turned off andonly the electric motor powers the machine. This mode is appropriate for indooroperation or where there is the need to provide quiet, emission free operation.

Merlo claims that the performance of this prototype Panoramic P41.7Hybrid machine is the same as a conventional Merlo telehandler of the same sizeclass. The Hybrid can be charged from the mains and the company is looking at aversion that can be electrically powered via a cable – suitable for use in wastetransfer stations.

Another new concept machine being developed by Merlo isthe C25.5 compact tracked Panoramic telescopic handler.Weighing around 4000kg, this interesting compact machine has a75kW (100.6hp) turbo diesel engine and a hydrostatictransmission. Equipped with a fork carriage common to thewheeled P25.6, the new tracked variant has a boom similar tothat used on the P32.6 to provide a maximum lift height of 5.0mand a maximum capacity rating of 2500kg.

The C25.5’s tracked undercarriage, which has been designedand made in-house by Merlo, features oscillating bottom rollersand 450mm wide rubber tracks. The drive train to each trackutilises a variable displacement hydraulic pump powering a fixedflow motor attached to an epicyclic gearbox. Controlled from aspacious cab, the machine can travel at speeds of up to 15km/hand make spin turns.

This Yanmar engined compactradius mini excavator has been improved withreduced overhangs so that it can operate in moreconfined spaces on tight sites.

The vital statistics of the EC10SR are a powerrating of 6.0kW (8hp), a maximum dig depth of1750mm and a bucket breakout force of 10.8kN.The machine features a variable widthundercarriage whose rubber tracks can beextended to increase width from 750mm to980mm for greater operational stability.

To aid loading onto trailers or vehicle bodies, the machine’s dozer blade can be raised higher to provide an increased approach angle of 30°. At Bauma theEC10C was displayed on a hook lift platform body carried by an Iveco Eco Daily vehicle with a GVW of 7000kg.

GG Group shows twin jib tower crGG Group shows twin jib tower crGG Group shows twin jib tower crGG Group shows twin jib tower crGG Group shows twin jib tower craneaneaneaneaneA particular talking point at Bauma 2010 was the new GG42085e-Tronic flat top twin jib tower crane. This intriguingmachine has two diametrically opposed jibs each with its own independently controlled trolley and lifting hook. A swivelseat in the special double screen cab allows the single operator to control the two hooks, one at a time, as required.

Another unique feature of the GG crane is that its slewing is achieved by means of two electric motor drivenpropellers at the end of each jib. This method of powered rotation and braking should greatly reduce the torsion on thetower but the propellers sound rather like a helicopter.

The GG42085e-Tronic at Bauma was fitted with two 85.0m long jibs which each provided a maximum workingradius of 82.5m. Maximum capacity of this model is 16 tonnes on each jib and a load of 2.2 tonnes can be lifted atmaximum radius. Interestingly this double jib tower crane concept was first developed in Belgium in the late 1960s bythe pioneering Gasbard Gillis and now his son, Patrick, has revived the idea and is planning even bigger machineswith jib of up to 150m on either side of the central tower.

The special sections in the GG machine include the two way facing cab with swivel seat, the central flat top sectionthat connects the twin jibs and the two jib end sections with their propeller assemblies. The crane has cameras oneach trolley and there are two safe load indicator systems to ensure safe lifting on each jib.

The logic is that, by having two jibs, each with their own independently controlled trolley and hook, a time efficiencyof 50 to 60% can be achieved. The company sees potential for its machine on construction projects such as coolingtowers as well as harbour work and offshore applications.

The use of hooklift systems onBell articulated trucks is not new – such machines havebeen sold by the company since 2002 in its native SouthAfrica and since 2006 in the UK. However, the newmachine at Bauma has been developed to suit theinternational market.

All wheel drive ADTs with hooklift systems able to pickup, carry and unload different demountable bodies areused for various applications. These include moving wastecontainers onto landfill sites and handling slag insteelworks.

The B25D hooklift ADT presented at Bauma has been developed in close co-operation with Bell Equipment’s SouthAfrican headquarters and the European production facility in Eisenach, Germany. The project was initiated andsupervised by Bell France in association with the technology partner Guima-Palfinger that has supplied the G30 Palifthook lift system. This equipment – suitable for moving containers with lengths from 5.0m to 7.0m - can also now besupplied on the larger B30D chassis.

To carry the G30 Palift system, the standard chassis frame of Bell the 205kW (275hp) B25D and 240kW (322hp)B30D is increased in length by 1500mm. As the G30 system only weighs around 3000kg, the B25D and B30D hooklifttrucks have unladen weights of only 17.72 and 20.1 tonnes respectively. To maximise stability when loading andunloading laden containers the Bell trucks have an hydraulically lockable oscillation joint.

The capacity of the G30 Palift equipment is 21.8 tonnes on the B25D and 25.8 tonnes on the B30D. The hookingheight is adaptable to 1425 mm and 1570 mm and therefore suitable for containers following DIN 30722 and FrenchFN 17-107. Accordingly, the hydraulically activated container locking devices (rear/front) are adaptable. All thehydraulic functions, including the container locking devices (rear/front), are powered by the Bell hydraulic system andthe control system is fully integrated into the host truck’s CANbus-based electronics.

Suitable for precisiongrading and heavy-duty earthmovingapplications, the two newcomers are the 1650Land 1150K which both have hydrostatictransmissions that allows full power turns tomaximise productivity.

The 16.0 to 17.0 tonne 1650L has a 4.0mwide blade with a capacity of 3.12m³. The smaller1150K weighs between 12.6 and 13.3 tonnes andits 3.21m³ capacity blade is 3.35m wide. Bothmachines have a Tier 3 certified Case 6.7 litreengine – with power ratings of 107.0kW (144hp) and 88.0kW (118hp). In both cases peak torque arrives at just1400rpm. The resulting powerful low down torque characteristics are ideal for dozing applications.

The engine power is sent to the tracks through a dual path PowerStat hydrostatic transmission, utilising variableaxial piston pumps and motors to provide a maximum drawbar pull of 275.1kN in the larger machine and 213.5kN inthe 1150K. As the transmission delivers drive to each track independently, it is possible to continue to push at fullpower throughout a turn, offering the operator maximum control for fine grading and for slope work. The transmissionhas a single joystick drive control and the operator can choose infinite speed adjustment up to 9.7km/h, or opt for oneof 10 pre-set speed increments, to suit the application.

The three track options available for both the 1150K and 1650L are Extra Long Track (XLT), Wide Track (WT) andLow Ground Pressure (LGP).

Both bulldozers have the Case Lubricated Track system, which is sealed and lubricated with an oil reservoir ineach pin. An optional Case Extended Life Track, with a second hardened bushing, is available to extend track life inabrasive soil conditions.

The larger of the newtruck mounted pumps was the S43SX (with a five section placing boom) thatprovides a maximum placing height of 42.3m. This machine slots into thecompany’s range between its established S42SX and S45SX models (whichboth have four section booms reaching up to 41.8m and 44.7m respectively).

The Roll and Fold RZ booms on the new S43SX utilise the concept provenon the proven S36SX and S52SX models. This boom configuration, completewith a 270° joint on the fifth section, helps boom unfolding in confined spacesand allows the delivery pipe to be threaded through windows and otheropenings. The machine also has the Schwing SX curved outrigger beamswhich allow the installation of a long stroke concrete pump.

An important Baumapremiere was theappearance of the newdesign of Schwing stationaryconcrete pumps. The machineon display was the SP2880that is first of a new futurerange due to become availablenext year.

Designed especially for operation on European construction sites, the SP2880 has a stylish new sound suppressed GRP cover to savetransport weight. The trailer mounted pump weighs a maximum of5500kg and it can be supplied on either a site tow or a highway towaxle – the latter allowing a maximum towing speed of 80km/h.

Powered by a 147.0kW (197hp) or a 132.0kW (177hp) engine, theSP2880 has a maximum theoretical pumping output of 101/59m³/h(rod/piston side) at a pressure of 94/160 bar. Rather than having achangeover block, the new machine simply has drip-free quick-connectors on the hoses supplying either the piston or rod side of thepump. It also has a new control panel and the ability to be operatedby remote control using Bluetooth technology.

The third new Schwing concrete pump at Bauma was thecompact S20 City which, with a 20.0m vertical reach placing boom, can be carried on a 4299mm wheelbase, 15 to 18 tonne GVW truck. The unit at Bauma was on a MAN TGM18.280 4x2 truck chassis withan outrigger spread of only 3.85m. Its 20RZ four-section boom has alow unfolding height of only 3.85m.

The C20 City can have a concrete pump with a maximumtheoretical output of 163m³/h at a pressure of 85 bar. If a placingboom is not required, the pump (together with delivery pipes able toprovide a line length of up to 260.0m) can be carried on a 12.0 tonneGVW truck.

Schwing also displayed its new SPB 32 independent placingboom at the Bauma. Carried on a tubular tower, this Roll and Foldboom can operate without a counterweight to a stand-alone height of20.0m. Maximum horizontal reach is 30.0m.

InnoInnoInnoInnoInnovvvvvativativativativative ve ve ve ve vehicle mountedehicle mountedehicle mountedehicle mountedehicle mountedaccess platform from CTEaccess platform from CTEaccess platform from CTEaccess platform from CTEaccess platform from CTEIn an interesting move to build up interest, CTE kept its latest platformwell wrapped up until the afternoon on the third day of Bauma. Whenthe covers were removed, visitors were able to see that the new Lift20.13MP Multi-Purpose platform was indeed something different.

What sets the Lift 20.13MP Multi-Purpose platform apart fromcompetitors is that its turntable is not on the vehicle deck (as isconventional) but on top of a two section telescopic boom. With thenon-rotating base boom retracted and stowed along the vehicle deck, the upper section boom operates like a normal straight telescopicboom platform to achieve a maximum working height of around13.0m.

When maximum working height (of almost 20.0m) or up and overcapability (up to 10.0m with a clear outreach of 9.1m) is required, thebase boom is angled up and telescoped out. In the latterconfiguration, the cage can clear an 8.9m obstacle. Cage capacity is200kg.

The clever design of the Lift 20.13MPplatform allows it to operate free onwheels with the lower boom stowed toachieve a maximum working height of13.0m when the cage is kept over therear of the vehicle. The machine can alsobe operated through a full arc with the Htype outriggers fully extended. One-sidedjacking is also available to increase theoperational versatility of the unit.

The Lift 20.13MP platform seen atBauma was carried on a Nissan Cabstar 35-11. The machine features the ability tooperate the outriggers from the cage and it has zero tailswing in all operatingconfigurations. The first production machines should be ready in September.

CTE also displayed a clever new outrigger design on its ZED26JH platform. This26.0m working height platform shown on a 7.5 tonne Mercedes Atego 4x2 truck now hasH pattern out and down outriggers where both the horizontal and vertical movements ofeach beam and jack are controlled by only one hydraulic cylinder. With this patentedstabiliser system, a mechanical link extends the outrigger beam outwards as a cylinderpowers the vertical jack down to the ground.

A new crawler mounted platform being displayed by CTE was the 23.0m maximumworking height Traccess 230. Able to reduce to a travel width of 800mm with a stowedheight of just under 2.0m, this machine can be moved through restricted openings.

The Traccess 230 has CTE’s classic sigmaboom configuration and its 200kg cage capacityis unrestricted up to 12.0m. The machine can bepowered by either a Kubota diesel or a Hondapetrol engine. It also has a 230V or 110V electricmotor to allow silent, fume-free platformoperation.

A radio remote control with the Traccess 230operates drive and steer functions as well asoutrigger deployment. When docked in the cageit then controls all aerial functions.

CTE

Not unveiled until the middle of Wednesdayafternoon at Bauma – this innovative CTE B-

Lift 20.13MP platform with its original slewring position was worth waiting for.

The clever outriggerdesign on CTE’s newZED26JH only requiresone cylinder per outriggerto extend both the beamand lower the verticaljackleg.

This new 23.0m crawler mounted platform waslaunched at Bauma by CTE to become thecompany’s flagship Traccess model.

The SMX225 weighs 2500kg and has both a 10.9kW (14.6hp)Kubota Z602 diesel engine and a 2.2kW 230V electric motor. When itsbooms and outriggers are stowed, the rubber tracked 980mm wideand it can be driven at up to 1.4km/h.

The outriggers on the SMX225 can be lowered to level themachine on side slopes of up to 11°. With fully extended stabilisers, the cage can be extend to a maximum outreach of 10.25m with a120kg load and out to 8.5m with its full 200kg capacity. There are alsoreduced duties with partial outrigger extension.

The new MJ750 was displayed at Bauma mounted onto a VolvoFM460 10x4 truck with a GVW of 53 tonnes. This platform provides amaximum working height of 75.0m with a 400kg cage load. Maximumoutreach of 35.0m can be achieved with up to 200kg in the cage.Maximum cage capacity is 600kg.

The model on show wasthe LCL 190 which comes in two versions to provide amaximum capacity of 12.0 or 18.0 tonnes.

The LCL 190 can be erected with a minimum jib lengthof 30.0m. Extra radius can be obtained by adding 5.0m jibinserts. The maximum jib length for this crane is 60.0mand it can lift either 1500kg or 1300kg (standard or heavylift version) at maximum radius. The maximumfreestanding tower height of the standard version is 49.5mwhen erected with on a 6.0m square base cross withlevelling jacks.

The hoist winch of the LCL190 is positioned in front ofthe jib pivot point rather than on the short (7.3m long)counter jib. Both the hoist and luffing ropes come on theirrespective winches from the factory to help speed siteinstallation.

The LCL190 has an automatic level luffing system sothat hook height removes constant as the jib is raised orlowered to alter working radius. There is an hydraulicdamper to prevent the jib from being raised too high andanother good safety device is automatic luffing ropetensioning.

Designed around anew operating principle that can be matched to specific applications, thelarger duo are the BR3288 and BR4099. They weigh 2350kg and 3380kgrespectively and are suitable for carriers in the 27 to 40 tonne and 30 to 60tonne operating weight ranges.

The new operating principle enables stroke length, blow energy andSandvik’s idle blow protector to all be easily modified to allow the breakers tobe matched to individual carriers and applications. A working mode selector islocated on the breaker.

When high energy mode is chosen the breaker uses a lower blowfrequency for optimum breaking power in hard materials, such as granite andreinforced concrete foundations. The selection of the high frequency modedelivers a higher blow rate and reduced impact energy to break softermaterials, such as limestone. The Idle Blow Protector works regardless ofworking mode to provide greater levels of protection.

The new BR4099 and BR3288 models feature Sandvik’s VIDAT(Vibration Dampened Tierods) system that has been designed to improvereliability. They also have a more robust front head which is produced usingnew manufacturing techniques and features fewer holes to relieve stress.Additionally, their tool-retaining pins are locked by simple, reliable rubber rings;while the surface of the lower tool bushing has been specifically designed toprovide longer tool life.

Hybrid tandem roller amongstHybrid tandem roller amongstHybrid tandem roller amongstHybrid tandem roller amongstHybrid tandem roller amongstBomag launchesBomag launchesBomag launchesBomag launchesBomag launchesFayat Group member Bomag had a large presence at Bauma and it usedthe exhibition to display a significant number of new or recently launchedmachines. Of particular interest was the unveiling of the company’s new10 tonne class pivot steer tandem roller with a hybrid drive system

Based on the new fourth generation BW174AP drum steer tandemroller, the hybrid BW174AP AM version has not only a Deutz diesel enginebut also an electric motor generator, a high capacity battery andassociated electronics. In operation the roller’s battery is charged ingenerator mode - e.g. when braking (reversing) or during vibrationshutdown - using the difference between the power generated by theengine and the power take-up. Any unused power is stored.

Power peaks are levelled out when the electric motor takes power fromthe battery e.g. when switching on vibration or during acceleration. Thisreduces the engine size of the BW174AP AM in its performance class sothere is no need for more complex exhaust gas treatment systems. At thesame time, the engine is said to always operate at optimum performanceand efficiency. This lowers fuel consumption significantly as well asreducing associated CO2 emissions. Bomag states that initial field testshave shown a fuel saving of up to 30%.

The new cab on the BW174AP tandem roller has an ‘active armrestsystem’ together with a hand-shaped travel lever. The operator’s seat can be slid sideways and beswivelled through 270° to achieve a goodoperating position and better visibility of the job inhand. The standard BW174AP comes completewith a fuel saving Ecomode engine managementsystem.

Bomag also showed its latest (5th generation)lightweight tandem vibrating rollers (weighing lessthan 1.8 tonnes) at Bauma. Complete with Kubota engines, the latestversions of the BW80AD, BW90AD and BW100ADM were available forinspection. There were also the new clear-sided models BW90SC-5 andBW100SC-5, have drums offset by 50mm giving working widths of950mm and 1050mm.

Amongst the latest additions to the Bomag Light Equipment line werethe BMP 8500 trench roller fitted with a new operator back-up protectionsystem called BOSS. There are also the BT60/4 and BT65/4 rammerswith new features as well as new single direction plate compactors.

This latest model weighs around30 tonnes and can be powered by one of twoCaterpillar engines, a 400kW (540hp) C15 or a570kW (765hp) C18, or an electric motor.

The 2.5m wide machine can be fitted withany of five different chipper and grinding rotorsto provide good operational versatility. Inaddition, the machine’s infeed can be fitted witheither two replaceable screen sections or solidfloor sections. Thus it can be tailored to carryout such different jobs as creating mulch from

trees and stumps, chipping wood or grinding up old wooden railway sleepers. To flow material into the machine, it has a 4477mm long feed conveyor powered by a high torque Poclain motor. A

metal detection system automatically reverses the feed system should the rotor come into contact with steel. Materialleaves the shredder via a 10.1m long discharge conveyor.

At Bauma the capability of the shredder to chip up large logs - ably loaded by a Sennebogen 825 Green Lineindustrial handler – was clearly demonstrated. The Magnum Force 5400T can achieve a throughput of 80 tonnes perhour (depending on material) and it can be moved on the road by means of a fifth wheel coupling and a rear threeaxle dolly.

Claimed to be Europe’sstrongest luffing jib tower crane, the WT2405L e.tronic utilises adistinctive pendulum counterweight that helps it to lift a maximumload of 128 tonnes whilst reducing the torque on the tower.

The WT2405L e.tronic at Bauma was erected on a largeportal base with a low tower height of 20.25m – maximumfreestanding tower height is 130.0m. The show crane did have itslongest jib that provides a maximum radius of 78.0m at which aload of 19.5 tonnes can be lifted. The crane can be equippedwith a 5.0m runner top at the end of its jib that has a capacity of8.0 tonnes.

The spacious, side-mounted operator’s cab of the WT2405Le.tronic has nine windows to maximise visibility. As well as acomfortable seat and a touch screen display panel, the operatorof this big crane gets air conditioning, a 24V refrigerator andeven a toilet and wash basin with a 200 litre fresh water tank anda 250 litre waste water tank.

Although dwarfed by its bigger brother, there was also thenew WT175L e.tronic luffing jib tower crane on display. Thiscrane has a maximum load capacity of 16.0 tonnes and can lift10.0 tonnes at 13.5m radiuses. It has been designed as alightweight crane able to be erected on the top of buildings tocarry out lifting work or help dismantle larger cranes.

The load chart of the WT175L e.tronic allows the crane to lift1.0 tonne at its maximum radius of 30.0m. The crane on show atBauma was erected on a base cross frame with a very shorttower height of 4.13m. The machine features a very short (4.0m)tail radius and its heaviest section only weighs 1.5 tonnes.
