EOD Solutions Ltd

EOD Solutions Ltd is a companyspecifically created to undertakeammunition and weapons stockpiledestruction. The company employs retiredAmmunition Technical Officers andAmmunition Technicians trained at theArmy School of Ammunition in the UK to undertake the logistical destruction of ammunition. Understanding howammunition and weapons function is aprime consideration when dealing with thedestruction and reverse engineering ofthese dangerous items.

EOD Solutions Ltd has undertaken reverseengineering projects where the companyteamed with factories in country or otherorganisations that allowed the work to be undertaken in a safe and secure manner. Environmental issues are now of high importance when disposing ofammunition and EOD Solutions Ltd isworking with environmentalists in this area.

Demilitarisation inAfghanistan

TransportableAmmunition

Destruction System(TRADS)

The installation of the TransportableAmmunition Destruction System (TRADS)at Camp Bastion under contract toDESWpns DGM to destroy small armsammunition in an environmentally benignmanner. The TRADS incinerates up to45000 rounds per hour depending on thetype of ammunition which equates to oneton all up weight of ammunition per houron a normal working day and was designed

and built by the company in associationwith Caldo Engineering with whom thecompany has a long and trustedrelationship.

The TRADS (which is built into a forty footcontainer) comes complete with allinfrastructures so that the user can placethe system on the ground and within threedays have the system working destroyingammunition. The system has wind downlegs as well as lifting points that enable thesystem to be jacked up from the deliveryvehicle without the need for a crane or itcan be craned if the user requires. This isespecially desirable in the present positionin Afghanistan where the system is astandalone operation outside theammunition storage facility in an areawhere there is no infrastructure. See videoEOD Solutions Ltd is currently building asmaller batch type furnace for EODTechnologies in the United States fordeployment in Afghanistan in support ofUS troops in other areas of the province.The picture sows the build nearingcompletion ready to ship to Afghanistan.

Explosion AftermathClearance

The company is currently working with theInternational Trust Fund (ITF) undertakinga clearance operation in Gerdec, Albaniawhere four explosions at an ammunitionunpacking facility killed 26 people andinjured hundreds more.

Over two hundred house were damagedor had to be demolished. In all a total of90 acres of land is to be remediated beforebeing returned to the Government ofAlbania. This is a difficult and demandingprocess as it is in the centre of a residentialarea. This limits operations considerablydue to the proximity of the localpopulation.

This year will see the conclusion of thistask that has made EOD Solutions Ltd wellequipped to undertake future operationsof this kind. The pictures show theproblems and the successes EOD SolutionsLtd has accomplished over the four yearclearance process.

Weapons DestructionEOD Solutions Ltd has undertakenweapons destruction programmes thatreduce the weapons to scrap to preventuse or sale to organisations that leantowards terrorism and criminal activities.So far 175000 have been destroyed inAlbania and another 10000 in Senegal bythe company. The weapons are destroyedusing methods that totally destroy anypart of the weapon from being used for itsintended purpose.

Quality, Safety andthe Environment

EOD Solutions Ltd has strict safety quality and environmental guidelines that are in line with US and UKgovernmental regulations. These guidelinesare employed irrespective of whichcountry operations are undertaken.Demilitarisation procedures are also allied to the NATO and UK regulationsregarding ammunition and weapons safetyand disposal.

OTT TECHNOLOGIES,NEW AND REFURBISHED ARMOURED VEHICLESOTT Technologies (Pty) Ltd (OTT) is a SouthAfrican company located outside Pretoria.The company is in operation since 1980. OTTdeveloped over the years from a smallcompany that specialised in therefurbishment of surplus ex-military allterrain vehicles to its current status as acompany with acknowledged engineeringexcellence. The current status of thecompany is an ISO 9001 certified companythat still re-manufactures surplus ex-militaryall terrain vehicles and also designs andmanufactures new wheeled armouredvehicles.

OTT has two main business streams, New

armoured vehicles and Refurbished Vehicles.A secondary business stream is the supply ofnew and refurbished original spares for Samiltrucks, Casspir MPV’s, Mamba MPV’s, RatelAPC’s and older generation Unimog trucks.

New Armoured andtactical Vehicles

OTT designs, develops and manufactureswheeled armoured vehicles. Our vehicles areused by police, military, peace keeping forcesand security companies for the safetransportation of personnel and assets intransit. The current new armoured andtactical vehicle products of OTT are:

Protector M21 Modular Armoured VehicleThe Protector MAV is built on a commercialtruck driveline. The maximum gross vehiclemass is 13 ton with a 4,3 ton payload. TheProtector can be configured as an armouredpersonnel carrier (APC), assets/cash in transitvehicle, ambulance or command and controlvehicle. It is available in 4x2 and 4x4configuration with Right Hand Drive steering.The basic crew consists of a driver andcommander. Up to 10 additional passengerscan be carried. Main users are police, securitycompanies and cash in transit operators.

Protector M22 Light Modular ArmouredVehicle (LMAV)The M22 LMAV is built on a commercial truckdriveline. The maximum gross vehicle mass is7,5 ton with a 2,4 ton payload. The M22 canbe configured as an armoured personnelcarrier (APC), assets/cash in transit vehicle,ambulance or command and control vehicle.It is available in 4x2 configuration with Leftor Right Hand Drive steering.

The basic crew consists of a driver andcommander. Up to 10 additional passengerscan be carried seated back-to-back or 9facing linear with the direction of travel.Main users are police, military, securitycompanies and cash in transit operators.

OTT Armoured Vehicles

Elephant 5000 Riot Control Unit (RCU)The Elephant 5000 RCU consists of amodular riot control unit mounted on 13,5 orhigher GVM commercial 4x2 or 4x4 truck. Ithas a 5000 litre water tank as well as dye andirritant tanks which can be sprayed on riotingcrowds to disperse them. Self protectionsystems protect the vehicle and crew againstfire and close contact by rioters. Steel gridsprotect the windows against hand thrownobjects. The crew consists of a driver andoperator.

Marrua M27 Light Armoured Patrol Vehicle(LAPV)The Marrua M27 is a light armoured patrolvehicle with a crew of 4. It is built on anAgrale Marrua AM200CD chassis and issupported through the Agrale distributornetwork. The M27 LAPV is primarily designedas a patrol and general utility vehicleprotecting the crew against small arms fireand side blasts from Improvised ExplosiveDevices (IED’s).

It can also be configured as a reconnaissanceand surveillance vehicle, tactical commandand control vehicle as well as a light cash intransit vehicle.

Puma M26 Mine and Blast Protected Vehicle(MRAP)The V-shaped hull Puma M26 4x4 is anarmoured personnel carrier (APC) with mineand IED protection. It is built on acommercial truck driveline. The main usersare military, police and security companiesduring peace keeping, homeland security andother asymmetric warfare operations.

Other roles include, high mobility mineprotected patrol vehicle, tacticalrescue/ambulance, mine protected weaponcarrier and mine protected tacticalcommand vehicle.

Puma M36 Mine and Blast Protected Vehicle(MRAP)The V-shaped hull Puma M36 4x4 is an

armoured personnel carrier (APC) with mineand IED protection. It is an evolutionary andlarger extension of the Puma M26 and is alsobuilt on a commercial truck driveline. Themain users are military and police duringpeace keeping, homeland security and otherasymmetric warfare operations.

Other roles include, high mobility mineprotected patrol vehicle, ambulance, mineprotected weapon carrier and mineprotected command vehicle.

Land Cruiser M40 Light Protected VehicleThe Land Cruiser M40 light protected vehicleis used for Cash in Transit and transportationof security personnel. It is based on theToyota Land Cruiser Series 79 pick up truck.It carries a crew of 4 (driver plus 3) with apayload of 300kg for assets.

Refurbished MilitaryVehicles

OTT also specialises in the re-manufacturingof ex-stock all terrain military and policevehicles and is internationally well known forthese high quality vehicles. Customersinclude the Africa Union, Nepal, variousNGO’s as well as various AfricanGovernments, mining houses and other

private customers. The product list includesRatel APC’s, Samil 20 Hunter SOV, Samillogistic trucks, Casspir mine protectedvehicles, and Nyala RG12 police APC’s.

Ratel 6x6 Armoured Personnel Carrier(Refurbished)The combat proven Ratel 6x6 is known as arobust and reliable vehicle that proved itselfduring operations in Southern Africa. TheAPC has a crew of driver plus 8. The Ratel canbe fitted with a variety of weapon systemsincluding 90mm gun, 12,7mm machine gun,14,5mm machine gun, 40mm automaticgrenade launcher or even with an anti-tankguided missile in the tank hunter role.

Samil 20 Hunter Light Strike Vehicle(Refurbished)The Hunter LSV is based on the proven Samil20 high mobility truck. It is mainly used byspecial operations or light strike teams wheresurprise, situational awareness, fire powerand a highly mobile and robust platform areessential for combat survivability. It has acrew of driver, commander and 5 gunners.The weaponry consists of a 12,7mm or 14,5mm machine gun plus three 7,62mm lightmachine guns to provide all round fire power.The Hunter is also available in a Patrol variantwithout machine gun mountings for thosecustomers who do not require the lethal firepower of the LSV.

Samil 20 All Wheel Drive High Mobility Truck(Refurbished)The Samil 20 is known for its extreme off-road mobility, robustness and reliability.It has a gross vehicle mass of 7700 kg and cancarry a load of 2690 kg. The Samil 20 isavailable as personnel carrier, light cargovehicle, field ambulance, light workshopvehicle, light fire tender, etc. It is a highlyversatile platform.

Samil 50 All Wheel Drive Tactical Truck(Refurbished)The proven Samil 50 is known for itsexcellent mobility, robustness and reliability.It has a gross vehicle mass of 12400kg and anoff-road payload of 6000kg making it theideal tactical logistic truck. Keyboard SwitchPanel and Illuminated

KeyboardsOur designs within this product sectorhave been proven in many demandingenvironments and include aerospace,marine and fighting vehicle applicationswhere our technology has met andfrequently exceeded our customer’sexpectations.

Keyboard designs are normally required tobe backlit and often specify the inclusionof integral annunciators; where necessarythese can be “sun-light readable” and“secret-until-lit”. Any of the lightingsystems specified in AS 7788 is available forthe illumination of keys, panel text andannunciators and, if required, a mixture oflight sources can be incorporated in a

single design. For example, incandescentfilament lamps and light emitting diodes.We also offer the ability to allow forsimilar dimming characteristics betweenLED and incandescent lighting sourceswithin the panel assembly.

The relatively simplicity of our designsensures a high degree of reliability andoffers a variety of switch actions and keyoptions. In most cases, the comprehensiverange of injection moulded key caps thatwe have already tooled will satisfy mostrequirements and thus a fast low cost turn-round. We can work from our customersfinalised drawings and specifications or,alternatively, we are pleased to makeavailable engineering expertise and advisein order to develop the best solution tosatisfy the requirement.

Annunciator andIndicator Display

PanelsOne of our recent technical innovationshas been the introduction of “sun-light

readable secret until-lit annunciatorscompletely housed within the thickness ofthe lightplate. This system contributes to atotally flush front panel surface and in theun-illuminated condition, the annunciatorscan be rendered indistinguishable from thesurrounding area. Among otherapplications, this unique integrated flatface panel technology is ideally suited toAdvisory displays. Employing appropriatelighting sources and filters, a range ofchromaticity requirements, including NVISas specified in MIL-STD-3009 can beachieved. The construction of ourannunciator and indicator display panels isgenerally based on the mechanical andenvironmental requirements detailed in AS7788.

TransilluminatedControl Knobs

Although primarily a manufacture,Paramount Panels (UK) has recentlybecome the European distributor forElectronic Hardware Corporation -probably the world’s largest manufactureof control knobs. Thus, we are able to offeran extremely comprehensive range ofknobs many of which are held in stock. In

other instances, we are always willing toacquire any necessary stocks and to deliverthese in accordance with our customer’sschedule. The EHC ranges of control knobscomplement the “DEF-STAN” range ofknobs that we have manufactured formany years and which remain readily

available. In the event that a requirementfor a non standard control knob arises, thecombined expertise of EHC andParamount Panels will ensure a solution atlow cost.

The Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)will provide respiratory protection to allUS aircrew on the DOD’s fleet of FixedWing non-fast jet platforms. There ispotential for follow on productioncontract awards of up to $74m.

The Modified M53 CBRN Mask system isrequired to provide continuous head-eye-respiratory protection against CBRN andcertain Toxic Industrial Chemicals andMaterials (TICs/TIMs), and emerging CBRNthreats.

Other requirements:• Operate in ambient conditionsproviding uncontaminated breathing air tothe user while in flight and during groundoperations• Integrate and interface with specifiedexisting and emerging fixed wing platformsas well as joint aircrew life supportequipment, including communications• Integrate with concurrent acquisitionefforts to include but not limited to lasereye protection, night vision equipment,below the neck CBRN protectiveensembles and new aircrew flightequipment

It is as yet unclear as to whatchanges will be made, however it has beensuggested that “Energy and climate policy aregoing to be a top priority.”

DefenCell Flood Wall UnitsOne company equipped for the challenge,and proven in the US in a flood protectionrole is J&S Franklin with their Flood ProtectionSystem, DEFENCELL

DefenCell has been proven in action, and inthorough testing, to be an effective and easilyinstalled Flood Protection barrier.

In April 2011, the town of Smithland, Kentucky,USA, which is situated at the confluence ofthe Ohio and Cumberland Rivers had to dealwith a record surge in river levels. TheLouisville Office of the U.S. Army Corp ofEngineers (USACE) requested an emergencyinstallation of a DefenCell Flood Wall system.

Within 24 hours, 3 miles worth of DefenCellFlood Wall units were delivered.

Within an hour of delivery, small teams wereable to start placing, connecting and filling thesystems. After just two hours, installation wasbeing achieved at a rate of 20+ units per hour,(Equivalent to 22,196 sand bags in the initialthree hours after delivery.)

In 34 hours, more than 10,500 linear feet ofDefenCell Flood Walls had been installed,over 700 units were filled with more than4,700 tons of sand, by a willing andenthusiastic but untrained, local workforce.The barrier was more than one mile in length,adding an extra four foot of flood protectionheight to the Smithland levee.

And....the DefenCell Flood Wall didsuccessfully contain the floods.

DefenCell has been tested by the USACEERDC center in Vicksburg MS, and has beenproven to significantly outperform sandbagsand other barriers though their ability to beinstalled (and removed) faster, offering lesswater seepage and to offer better overallendurance.

The DefenCell Flood Wall is a non-metallicgeotextile based system, developed initiallyfor ballistic defences in military operations.However its versatility, flexibility and its ability

conditions. Under real test trackcircumstances, engineers found it difficultto consistently replicate dynamic motioninputs and their work was further limitedby weather conditions and the ever-changing terrain.

In order to find a solution to improve thisway of testing Lockheed Martin turned toMoog, an expert in test, simulation andmotion control. The Turret Test SystemMoog delivered included a 6 Degrees-of-Freedom (DOF) motion base, controlcabinet and the Replication Module ofthe Moog Integrated Test Suites software.

The Moog Motion Base System deliversthe desired dynamic performance withpayloads up to 8,000 kg (17500 lb). On thetop platform of the motion base,Lockheed Martin can install an actualturret or a remote weapon station. MoogTurret Test Systems can handle payloadsup to 24,000 kg (53,000 lb) and meetspecific requirements related to particularexcursions, velocities or accelerations.

The Moog Replication Softwareaccurately reproduces time history filesthat were recorded by means of a vehiclewith full instrumentation on a traditionaltest track. This simulation occurs fully ina laboratory, saving time, optimising thetesting process and improving thereliability of test results. The iteration
