What is Word??

?

Page 4: The word (Semantics)

Word is the basic

unit of Semantics

Page 5: The word (Semantics)

There are two types of word

Those which have proper

meanings such as:

Play,like,beautiful etc.

Form Functional Grammatical Words

These are those words which are little or have no meanings such as:As,To,a,Of etc.

Bloomfield`s

defination of word

•A Minimum free unit that occurs in isolation

Page 10: The word (Semantics)

In this Bloomfield suggested that we should look for an element smaller than the word a unit of meaning of the morpheme

Example “ Loved _d” in this adore and part clearly shown

But in “took” in this we cannot segment “took” in to the parts

So we cannot define words in terms of morpheme

Term of Morpheme

There are some elements within words that are not grammatical yet equally have little or no meaning

E.g “Cran _cranberry, Straw _strawberry” They don't have independent meaning and

don't occur in any other words But in “Blackberry” it has independent

meaning and occur with other words e.g black board, black bird

More examples “Green finch, Bull finch, chaffinch

Some words are not grammatical

Page 12: The word (Semantics)

There is no consistency about the numbers of semantic units.

We may recognize with in a word e.g “stallion mare”

But in Giraffe “Male Giraffe _Female Giraffe”

No Consistency

Page 13: The word (Semantics)

He introduced two kinds of words Transparent Words Opaque Words

Ullman`s Theory

Page 14: The word (Semantics)

These are words those meaning can be determined from the meaning of their parts.

Examples “Chopper. Doorman

Transparent word

Page 15: The word (Semantics)

These are those words whose meaning cannot be determined from the meaning of their parts.

Examples “Axe and Poster

Opaque words

Page 16: The word (Semantics)

All these considerations may suggest that we should abord out the idea that the word is a natural unit for semantics.

However useful it may be for the dictionary maker
