CODE OF PRACTICE FOR WOOL PREPARATION AND STORAGE

To enable Canadian wool growers to achieve better wool preparation and higher financial returns the following are the recommended guidelines. Producers should also implement biosecurity measures to prevent and control the spread of disease. Please refer to The National Farm Animal Care Council Code of Practice for Sheep.

1) All sheep need to be emptied out before shearing. i.e. No feed or water to be administered to the sheep for a minimum of 12 hours prior to shearing. By carrying out this practice the sheep’s stomach and bladder will be empty and therefore the wool does not become contaminated with dung and urine. The sheep will also sit better for shearing as they do not struggle the same which enables the shearing process to be easier for both the shearer and the sheep. Never shear wet wool or pack wet wool.

2) The belly wool needs to be kept completely separate from the fleece wool. The shearer should remove and throw the belly aside as the sheep is being shorn, belly wool to be packed separately.

3) All short, stained wool and tags need to be removed from the crutch area as the sheep is being shorn. This wool is kept completely separate from all other types of wool and packed separately.

4) All fleeces should be thrown onto a wool table to enable the skirting of the fleeces to be performed in a proficient manner. Chaffy or bury wool should be skirted from the fleece and packed separately.

5) The board should be swept and kept clean between sheep as well as during the shearing of the sheep.

6) All fleeces should be shaken to remove any second cuts before rolling and pressing the fleeces.

7) When pressing the wool all the different categories of wool are to be pressed separately. There should be no mixing of the different wool types during shearing but when pressing at the end of shearing the different types of wool can be put into one bag but they need to be separated by sheets of newspaper.

8) All bags are to be sewn with butchers twine. Please do not use baling twine, wire, electric fence wire, or polyprop twine to sew the wool bags.

9) All bags need to be identified as to their contents. 10) Where possible during shearing the level of straw needs to be kept to a minimum and

away from the shearing area to keep the contamination level to a minimum. 11) Coloured & Blackface sheep are to be separated and shorn last so as not to contaminate

the white wool with coloured fibres. 12) Fleece preparation incentives of up to 8¢/lb is applicable for bright high yielding fleeces

that have been properly skirted and packaged. 13) Maintaining a clean shearing board and floor is an important and continuous process. It

must be done before, during and after shearing to insure a quality clip. 14) Wool should be packed in approved packaging and then stored in a dry environment in

order to preserve optimum quality. Wet wool has no value and wool bags are not water proof.

INSTRUCTIONS DE PRÉPARATION DE LA LAINE Afin de permettre aux producteurs de laine canadiens de mieux préparer leurs toisons et d’obtenir de meilleurs rendements financiers, il est recommandé de suivre les directives qui suivent. Les producteurs doivent également mettre en œuvre des mesures de biosécurité afin de prévenir et de contrôler la propagation de maladies. S’il vous plaît vous référer aux codes d’éthiques du Conseil National pour les soins aux animales sections ovines. 1) Tous les moutons doivent être à jeun avant la tonte, c’est-à-dire qu’aucune nourriture ni eau ne doit être donnée dans les 12 heures avant la tonte. En adoptant cette pratique, l’estomac et la vessie du mouton seront vides et la laine ne sera pas souillée par des excréments ou de l’urine. Le mouton prendra également une meilleure position assise et se débattra moins pendant la tonte, ce qui facilitera la tâche à la fois pour le tondeur et pour le mouton. Ne jamais tondre ni emballer une laine mouillée. 2) La laine provenant du ventre doit être conservée à l’écart du reste de la toison. Le tondeur doit l’enlever et la mettre de côté pendant la tonte du mouton, afin de l’emballer séparément. 3) Toute laine courte, colorée ou souillée doit être enlevée de l’arrière-train au moment de la tonte. Cette laine sera conservée dans un endroit séparé de tous les autres types de laine, puis emballée séparément. 4) Toutes les toisons doivent être déposées sur une table à débardage (nettoyage). La laine contenant foin ou bardane doit être retirée de la toison et emballée séparément. 5) Le plateau de rasage doit être balayé et nettoyé entre chaque mouton ainsi que pendant la tonte du mouton. 6) Toutes les toisons doivent être secouées afin d’éliminer la laine provenant des recoupes, et ce, avant de rouler et d’emballer les toisons. 7) Lors de l’emballage il faut que toutes les catégories de laine soient emballées séparément. Il ne devrait y avoir aucun mélange entre les différents types de laine durant la tonte, mais lors de l’emballage, à la fin de la tonte, les différents types peuvent être empaquetés dans un même sac en les séparant avec une couche de papier journal. 8) Tous les sacs doivent être cousus avec de la ficelle de boucher. Ne pas utiliser de corde à balles, de fil, de broche à clôture électrique ou de ficelle en polypropylène pour coudre les sacs de laine. 9) Tous les sacs doivent être identifiés de leurs contenus. 10) Dans la mesure du possible, pendant la tonte, il faut maintenir la quantité de paille à un strict minimum, loin de la zone de tonte, afin de limiter la contamination de la laine. 11) Les moutons de couleur doivent être séparés et tondus en dernier afin de ne pas contaminer la laine blanche avec des fibres de couleurs. 12) Une prime pour la préparation des toisons pouvant atteindre 8¢/lb est applicable sur les toisons claires à rendement élevé qui ont été préparées et emballées adéquatement. 13) Maintenir le plateau et le plancher de tonte propre est un processus important et continu. Ceci doit être fait avant, pendant et après la tonte afin d’assurer une toison de qualité. 14) La laine doit être emballée dans un emballage approuvé et ensuite entreposée dans un endroit sec afin de préserver une qualité optimale. La laine humide n’a pas de valeur et les sacs d’emballage ne sont pas imperméables.
