Ob. titania

Oberonia titania (syn. Ob. palmicola) is found on Norforlk Islands; New South Wales and Queensland, Australia; New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji at elevations of 160 to 1200 meters as a miniature sized, hot to cool growing epiphyte with oblong, coriaceous leaves arranged in a fan. It can bloom at almost any time of the year on a terminal, arching to pendulous many flowered inflorescence.

At the May Meeting, Dave Gatfield gave an interesting talk on the Oncidium Alliance and how they are treated for judging in show schedules. Some notes from his talk are presented below. There are often 3 main classes for hybrids in show schedules. 1. Varicosum Type This section is one we commonly refer to as the classic Oncidium shape. Many of the species once known as Oncidium have now been reclassified as Gomesa, Trichocentrum, Rossioglosum and others. Some species, such as Odontoglossum are now classified as Oncidium. The flowers are plentiful and mainly in the yellows, with perhaps brown markings. The racemes can have many large branches or many small branches on an upright stem. The requirement for this section is to have many flowers, well displayed, a good size and not too bunched. These genera have over 600 different species which gives a potential for a huge number of different hybrids. 2. “Filled in flower” type. This section has flowers arranged on a long arching, or straight, non- branching raceme. The flowers are generally rounded in outline, have well filled in flower shape and a good number of flowers. The influence in this section is mainly from species that were from the Odontoglossum section, but are now mainly reclassified as Oncidium. Because of the many and varied species that make up this section, flower colours cover a wide spectrum and are generally very bright. Once considered to be only cooler growers, today’s breeding with warmth tolerant species means that these hybrids will grow and flower very well in our warmer climate. The requirement for this section is to have a good number of nicely filled in flowers well displayed on a straight or arching raceme. 3. “Open flower” type This section generally has flowers arranged on a straight or arching raceme. The reasonably numerous flowers are generally rounded in out line, though not necessarily so, with the flower shape very open. With the species that have been used to make these hybrids, colours, flower shapes and sizes are quite varied. The species responsible in this section are mainly Oncidium, Ada and Brassia with a variety of other species having relatively minor roles. As this section has species in its history that come from warmer climates, these hybrids are generally easier to grow and not dependent upon winter warmth. The requirement is generally for a good number of flowers well displayed on either an upright or arching raceme. Flower shape will be dependant entirely upon its genetic history and should be taken into account.

HBOS Display at Bundaberg Orchid Society Show (10th – 12th May) [Above]

Our display won 3rd place behind Bundaberg ‘A’ and Agnes Water Orchid and Foliage Soc . While the major prizes were won by John and Narelle Hoffman from Maryborough (Champion Orchid) and John and Bethel Hughes from Bundaberg (Reserve Champion and Best Specimen), HBOS was well represented in the prize winners. Terri Bade won 4 firsts, two seconds and a third. Les Napper won two firsts and a second, Chris Trudgian won a first, a second and a third, Thi Van de Groot won a first and a third, Ron Colbran won a first, Stan Pidgeon won a second and Carol Morgan won a third. This was a good effort against strong competition I thought. Well done to all who contributed plants to the display and to all who helped set up and pull down the display. It is great to see some of the ‘newer’ members getting involved.

Recent Shows

HBOS Display at Gympie District Orchid Show (27th – 28th April) [Above]

While our Display was placed equal 6th out of 9 displays we did have Champion and Reserve Champion orchids (owned by Terri Bade) and Best Species (owned by Daphne McKenna) in our display, as well as numerous class winners owned by Les Napper, Terri Bade, Keith Lydiate, Ron Colbran, and probably others that I haven’t recalled (it has been a few weeks ago now!) This was our first chance to try out the new display stand that Darryl Coombes, Keith Lydiate and Graham Johnston made and it is certainly much lighter and easier to assemble so a big ‘Thank You’ for your effort.

HBOS Inc. now has a presence on Facebook. If you are into Facebook then go to the search bar and type in ‘Hervey Bay Orchid Society’ to bring up the page, and join the discussions. Julie Arthur is the Administrator for this site, with the assistance of Carol Jenkins.

The April IGG meeting was held at Tony and Kay Russell’s place, at short notice, after the Botanic Gardens site was not available. A big ‘Thanks’ to Tony and Kay for organising the sausage sizzle lunch and the venue for the meeting. There was plenty of plants to discuss and Les Napper showed how to divide a very large Cattleya plant and a large Stanhopea. This was certainly a monumental task. Our next IGG will be at Terri and Carolyn Bade’s place, Lot 52 Flynn Court (off Sturt St), Urraween at 2pm on Saturday 25th May and everyone is welcome. Please bring a chair and a hat and a plate of afternoon tea to share. After the afternoon tea, those interested in seeing how orchids are grown from seed are welcome to stay on for a short workshop on ‘flasking’ orchids.

Important – Fraser Coast Show!

Every year we help Maryborough District Orchid Society to put on a great Orchid Display at the Fraser Coast Show. Plants for the Show need to be delivered to Giles and Janine’s house (20 Manchester Court, Dundowran) by 12 midday on Wednesday 22nd May. The plants should be accompanied by a legible list with your name and the names of your plants. HBOS will pay the $1 entry fee for each plant to save you fiddling with small change. Giles will take the plants to the Show on Weds afternoon and fill in the official paperwork for entries. The plants will be collected after the Show by Julie Arthur and brought to the IGG at Terri’s on Saturday 25th where you can pick them up. Please support the Show and MDOS by contributing a selection of good plants. It’s not hard to win prizes.

Getting to meetings! If you would like to attend the Monday evening general meetings but are unable to get there because you don’t have transport please let one of the committee members know and we might be able to organise that.
