The Women’s Foundation is making a new documentary that will examine the scale and impact of media influences in Hong Kong. The one-hour bilingual documentary will feature stories from across the generations – from teen girls to older women – and interviews with politicians, artists, entertainers, activists and academics.

Our three main objectives for the film are to:

(i) INSPIRE a new awareness and approach on the part of journalists in this part of the world to report women’s stories without bias and with an enhanced sensitivity as to the power of the media to influence and shape how society acts and thinks

(ii) ADVOCATE a greater sensitivity, responsibility and thoughtfulness on the part of the media, entertainment and advertising industries

(iii) ENCOURAGE all media consumers and particularly women and girls to filter what they are seeing and to embrace a set of core values and healthy aspirations that allows them to appreciate and distinguish natural and innate beauty from airbrushed fantasy.

The Women’s Foundation intends to screen the film in as many Hong Kong schools and youth centres as possible, and at call-to-action forums in the broader community. We hope that working in partnership with the Education Bureau, the film will be a central part of a new media-literacy training programme for Hong Kong secondary

schools which will enable students to critically reflect on media messages and to understand how stereotypes of femininity and masculinity limit the social and career choices of girls and boys. To facilitate discussion and learning, The Women’s Foundation will produce a set of study guides and discussion prompts in Chinese and English to complement the film, drawing on the support of the Equal Opportunities Commission and other partners.
