Dear Winston School Family and Friends,

The 2012-2013 school year is well underway, and the entire school community is feeling the excitement of this past year’s accomplishments as well as looking forward to the limitless potential of this school year. Each year, I reflect on the year before and all that was achieved at The Winston School. I am humbled by the successes of our students, the talent of our faculty and the hard work of the Board of Trustees and parents. The 2011-2012 school year was no exception. The Winston School is blessed with a dedicated Board of Trustees and an extended group of families, alumni, and community members who understand and believe in our mission. The Winston School continues to thrive with the caring support of all members of our community and their generous personal donations of time, energy, and monetary support. All of these contributions are essential to our mission; a mission that teaches bright students who learn differently®. These contributions help us open endless possibilities for students who, in other environments, often lose their “passion” for learning. I enjoy describing the continuous growth at Winston and showcasing the “big things” that happen at a small school. As I talk with students and faculty about the growth and change over time, the word “gratitude” appears to be a theme that continues to surface. The students are appreciative of being in a small school where they are cherished and nurtured by the faculty to become confident learners. The faculty shares their feelings of gratitude for a community that supports one another and has mutual respect amongst their colleagues and the student body each and every day. The feeling of gratitude in any environment is to be honored and certainly this is no exception at The Winston School. The 2011-2012 school year annual fund allowed Winston to upgrade our technology and open a lower school lab and Middle and Upper School lab with MAC computers and it also ensured that each lower school classroom was able to have both teacher and student mini labs within the individual classrooms. We were grateful to be able to add more smart technologies in classrooms, assistive technology, and fulfill teacher requests for technology trainings and equipment. The Lower School was able to be involved with a research study with Texas Christian University (TCU) that proved to be a great success in terms of student growth in math and, this school year, we were able to integrate Reasoning Minds Math Program because of the experience with TCU. The athletic department enhanced their equipment and curriculum and your contributions also allowed the band program to grow and expand for this year. The 2011 -2012 school year also marked the inaugural year for the Upper School capstone course, The Senior Project. This capstone course was designed to include all aspects of the seniors learning experiences throughout Upper School, as well as their personal passions and goals. The 2012 graduates did an exceptional job with their projects and the faculty mentors were grateful to have had the experience of working one on one with senior students throughout the entire year. One student stated that he was “grateful for the experience and he took pride in his work for the first time in a long time.” Our academies are thriving! This school year we have added two more academies to this program, The Performing Arts Academy and the World Cultures Academy. Our programs have been very successful and this year we predict even more students in academy programs to enhance their college preparatory program further as they prepare for college. Our continued goal is to enhance student learning experiences while simultaneously helping students learn self advocacy skills and prepare them for their college experiences and for their bright futures. As always, I welcome your comments and questions as we work to make Winston the best school for bright students who learn differently ®.
