SUPPORT FOR LOCAL ARTISTS IN 2020 The Veolia Mulwaree Trust is encouraging local artists to apply for a Veolia Creative Arts Scholarship in 2020. Two scholarships valued at $3000 each are available to

local creative artists working in any arts discipline, including but not limited to, performing arts, visual arts, literature, multi-media and screen arts. The scholarship program commenced in 2008 and has provided support to more than 40 artists including musicians, authors, painters, film makers, print makers, sculptors, poets and photographers. The Veolia Creative Arts Scholarships were established to support the creative culture in our region and recognise the valuable contribution artists make to enrich our community. The selection committee, headed by Patron of the Veolia Creative Arts Scholarship Jennifer Lamb, will award two $3000 scholarships for artists to further their arts practice or to undertake a program of arts study. Scholarships are available for practicing and emerging artists from any one of the seven Local Government Areas serviced by the Veolia Mulwaree Trust, including Goulburn Mulwaree, Oberon, Shoalhaven, Upper Lachlan, Wingecarribee, Wollondilly and the former Palerang Council area. While there have been celebrations that the major fires are now out and thanks and appreciation is being given to those who put whatever they could aside to work together during such a difficult fire season, we are aware of the significant impact it has had on many people.

It's been a difficult few months for Windellama, our neighbouring communities and many communities across NSW dealing with the bushfires and their immediate property, economic, physical and psychological impact.

bush fire season which goes to at least 31 March 2020. We traditionally have had fires in Windellama during March so even with the recent rain we cannot be complacent. Therefore, it is still important that you and your family have a bush fire survival plan and know what you will do if a

Windellama Garden Club Incorporated News January Rainfall

All up for January we received 21.5mm.

February Rainfall

February at our place has always been good for rain but so far this year it has been exceptional. Total rainfall so far is 178.5mm. Now all we need is a constant monthly average to keep everything growing.

Fruit Trees

So far we have lost only one tree a plum that has always struggled since planting. First chance I get, out it comes. The other trees have remarkably picked up, although, fruit will be small.

It looks like we have lost only one grape vine with another sprouting new shoots. I think it's confused!

Garden Vegetables

We have planted Brassica seeds (Cabbage family) in jiffy pots to plant out when I can prepare the garden beds – when! I suppose one good thing at our place is the drought slowed the weed growth but I bet, not for long.

Flower gardens

Some of flower plants that looked dead are starting to sprout new growth, not at the base of the plant but at least half way up the plant on branches that look dead. So I suppose, don't be in a hurry to cut back or remove dead looking plants.

Bird Life

The Magpies are no longer competing with the hens for food but the Crimson Parrots' numbers have increased when I do the evening chook feed.

The Wrens have bred and have 4 young. They know when to breed because their young require live food. Live food that is usually in abundance when it rains.

Country Fair

At our last garden club meeting discussion took place on the Country Fair. Several ways to create interest were discussed. One suggestion was we revert back to when the Country fair was always held, that is in November. What ever is decided on, one thing for sure is, we will need help as our membership has dwindled. So anyone interested in helping out with the Country Fair can ring me or turn up at our meetings.

Me thinks, to have a successful event of any kind you need a committee. With everyone within the committee having different jobs/tasks. The most important member to my way of thinking is the Minute Secretary, whose job is to name and record progress that each member has made at each meeting and then publicise.

Next Meeting

Our next meeting will be held at the Kings residence 101 Charles Road Windellama on Tuesday 17th March at 10am. All welcome.

Windellama Landcare

There will be a working bee at the Chain of Ponds on Saturday 14 March to complete the fencing project there. We will meet at 10 am for a cuppa. Lunch will be provided after the fencing and will be followed by a meeting. Visitors are welcome.

Following the drought, fires and floods the Windellama Landcare Healthy Soils Program, like many local landholders, is taking a breather in March. The Landcare Group is putting together a Workshop in early April that will provide guidance and support for members whose property has issues arising from any of those events.

There are a number of programs available to landholders that can provide technical advice and financial support to eligible landholders. Windellama Landcare will have people and information on hand to talk to you on your concerns and the availability of support.

Windellama SES First Aid & CFR

What a land of contrast we live in, first we have devastating fires that seemed to go on forever, then rainfall, destructive in another way, who knows how long it will go on for.

We, as SES, have started our year off with a series of informative topics and a practical exercise last

Monday night the 17th, just as well it was not on the next night as there was a very heavy storm with some hail.

We have our first CFR training night on the 22nd of Feb, being the fourth Saturday of the month.

There have been some very interesting CFR callouts.

We have had some new members join our team.

SES gives you an opportunity to be instructed in FIRST AID as part of the standard learning, CPR is included in this course. CPR is a must, it could save someone very dear to you, give it some thought. My contact number is (02)48447143.

Our Astonishing Rescue – a White-tailed Tropicbird!

Due to the violent storms and continuing wild weather along the east coast of Australia during February, dozens of exhausted and underweight seabirds were blown off course. Many were pushed not only far from their usual ocean habitat, but also a long way inland.

One such bird in this plight was a White-tailed Tropicbird (Phaethon lepturus), found by one of our members on the road near Tuena (at the northern end of the Upper Lachlan Shire).

The White-tailed Tropicbird's range encompasses a broad band of tropical and subtropical areas around the world. The birds can be seen from the southern Indian Ocean and western and central Pacific, to tropical and subtropical parts of the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean. Therefore, it was absolutely incredible to find this bird in our branch area!

It was a juvenile and the poor thing had obviously had a few wild days being blown around. It was identified with the help of Crookwell vets and then, because seabirds need specific and specialised care, arrangements were made to transfer it to the Australian Seabird Rescue Group. There it was to be paired with another White-tailed Tropicbird which had also found itself in a similar predicament. Both birds will be kept in care until they have recovered their health and strength and then release will be organised back into the area where they belong!

The adult white-tailed tropicbird is a slender, mainly white bird, 71–80 cm long including the very long central tail feathers, which double its total length. The wingspan is 89–96 cm. The bird has a black band on the inner wing, a black eye-mask, and the bill is orange-yellow to orange-red.

The White-tailed Tropicbird breeds on tropical islands laying a single egg directly onto the ground or a cliff ledge. It disperses widely across the oceans when not breeding and spends most of its time far out at sea, over warm waters - sometimes wandering far.

It feeds on a wide variety of small fish and squid, caught by surface plunging - it seems to favour flying fish which it takes in the air, and which are common in tropical waters. It also eats snails and crabs, but is a poor swimmer.

Changes to Waste Management Centre Opening Hours

Changes to Waste Management Centre opening hours. From Monday 2 May 2016 Goulburn Mulwaree Council’s Waste Centres will operate different hours.

Goulburn Waste Management Centre open 7 days per week from 8am to 4pm.

Marulan Waste Management Centre to be open from 8am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, plus 8am to 12noon on Friday and Monday.

Tarago Waste Management Centre to be open from 8am to 4pm on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

All Waste Management Centres will be closed on public holidays and from 12 noon on Christmas Eve.

Marulan and Tarago Waste Management Centres will also be closed from 12noon to 12.30pm on opening days to enable the operator a dedicated lunch break.


Nerriga Garden Club

Thursday20th Feb was our first meeting since the fires and rain swept through us and it was wonderful to sit and enjoy Sandra’s scones and the lovely garden and weather. Even though the rain was a bit torrential ( over 500mm at Mongarlowe ) everything looked and smelt renewed. The grass seems to be making up for its inability to grow during the past year and is very green. Never going to complain about having to cut it again! The corn, potatoes and pumpkin were all flourishing but the pumpkins may struggle to ripen before winter hits as the seasons seem topsy turvy with quite a cool couple of mornings already. It is interesting how much the rain stimulates growth and watering no matter how deeply and often never matches it. Frogs are everywhere and the birds are sounding happier but now is the time to re evaluate the plants in the garden and I know I have given up on the strugglers and looking at those that have done OK over the past 2 years. More of those will be planted and the precious darlings either confined to pots or left to others to plant.

Our next meeting will be on March 19th and we will meet at Nerriga Hall and straighten it and the garden up a bit. Again it is surprising what the plants did there as they were not pampered over the past year at all. Meet at 10am for tea, coffee and cake then lunch after some work and talk. A few garden notes from Nerriga

Reading Harry’s comments on tomato varieties I thought I would share the ones that have done well here. I usually start picking in early January but a few weather issues prevented that this year I find Burnley Gem ( bred at Burnley Hort in Melbourne ), College Challenger and Long Tom do well. I get the seed from New Gippsland seed farm and have excellent germination rates in fact often direct sowing as we go from winter to Summer overnight. I do provide protection from the frost with either vegie net or this year another layer of hail net under the hail net that covers the veg patch and this seems to help both with late frosts and blazing hot sun. Once the tomatoes start to flower I lift the net so it is only on the top and the bees seem to find the plants OK with the blue bottomed bees being prevalent. I also experiment with tomatoes from Inspiration seeds in Tassie and Mr Stripey is a standout just a very vigorous plant. My eggplant are Orient Express and Fairy Tales and I am picking the former already. It will be interesting to see the effect of the big wet after the big dry and roasting and I suspect a lot will succumb to fungal disease but it will all depend on the weather. I think Hanrahan paid us a visit this year! Kay



March in Your Garden By Irene Turner

Get your cauliflower, cabbage, Brussel sprouts or broccoli in now and feed them with liquid fertilizer or worm poo to get them growing. If there is white cabbage moths about cover them with netting.

Other vegetables that can be planted now lettuce, turnip, radish, and white onion, carrots, chives, coriander, garlic, kale, kohlrabi, leek, parsley, rocket, silverbeet, spring onion, swede.

I find if you sprinkle lime around the small vegetables plants it help to keep away the snails.

FLOWERS;

Seedling;- alyssum, pansy, viola, stocks, poppy, calendula, carnation, dianthus, polyanthus, larkspur, snapdragon, static, verbena, Virginian stock. Also wallflower, sweet Williams both tall and dwarf.

Perennial plants should be in the nurseries now, hollyhock, Canterbury bells, aquilegia(columbines), delphiniums and pentstemons.

Watch for insects – aphids and various caterpillars can appear on roses . Spray with rose spray.

You can propagate plant cutting of geraniums, fuschia and hydrangeas. Using a mixture of 1 part coarse sand to 2 parts of peatmoss, or potting mix, make sure the mixture never dries out.

Things to do now;

Continue deadheading roses to encourage new autumn buds to form.

Prune bottlebrush stems just behind the old flowers.

Break up suckers and divide shrubs such as plumbago, Chinese lantern(Abutilion), Lilac.

Repot house plants if it has overcrowded roots, reduce watering as weather starts to cool down.

Apple scab, is a patches on the outside of apples are a sign of the damaging fungal disease, or black spot, a common problem in cooler areas. Good hygiene is the key to control, so pick up all fallen fruit and leaves. Spray the tree with copper fungicide of lime sulfur after leaf drop in early winter, then spray again in late winter as the buds are swelling.

Water a solution of liquid potash into the root area of fruit trees to encourage bud-bearing wood to form.

Remove and replant strawberry runners from parent plants that are more than three years old.

Keep citrus trees well watered during this import fruit –development period.

Pick stone fruit off the tree before they develop fungal disease and rot, put bad fruit into the

garbage.


Willow Glen Gardeners

The February meeting of the garden club was held at Peter and Maria’s home at Lake Bathurst. Peter and Maria have an extensive garden of ornamentals, fruit trees and vegetables nestled amongst mature pine and deciduous trees, which provide wind and sun protection for their garden during the hot summer conditions.

We were all saddened to hear that one of our long term members recently moved to Cobargo, only to be burnt out in the recent bushfires. Many of their boxes hadn’t even been unpacked, before the fire hit. So many people have lost property and possessions in this season’s fires, and some their lives. This fire season has been a tragic one across the eastern States and South Australia, and we all look forward to receiving breaking rain to provide relief.

All of our members are still suffering from the drought and heat, and even those gardeners with sufficient water are reporting that their plants are just surviving, not thriving at all. Many members reported seeing quite mature trees dying due to the drought and heat.

Carolyn and John’s fig tree has been dropping its fruit due to the heat, and the rest of their garden is in survival mode. Doug’s tomatoes are half their normal height but his pumpkins are going very well. I guess pumpkins like the heat.

Dawn’s lawn has suffered to the point of almost vanishing, but her garden is hanging on as she has good access to water.

Many members are still having trouble with pests eating their gardens. Rob and Robyn have had a lot of damage through wingless grasshoppers and Tony and Sandra are having trouble with deer invading their garden and feasting on their vegetables. Our old friends the rabbits are, of course, ever present and damaging the ground with their scratchings and eating whatever they can find.

Sue is tackling the issue of water shortage by converting 1,000 litre Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs) into “wicking” beds. The IBCs are cut in half and their bottoms filled with gravel to act as a water reservoir. A layer of water-permeable material such as shade-cloth is laid on top and then the growing medium. Plants are added and watered in for the first few weeks. After that their roots can access the water that will move up through the soil from the bottom reservoir. A length of PVC piping acts as an inflow channel to allow the water to be replenished and an overflow valve at the side of the vessel releases excess water. This approach saves a lot of water when compared to growing plants in traditional beds. Walking around Maria and Peter’s garden was inspiring as usual. Despite the harsh conditions, their garden was still looking good, although many of the vegetables had bolted to seed and there was some heat burn on some of the overhanging trees. The trumpet vine was in full bloom providing plenty of colour, the parsley had gone mad and the patch of Jerusalem artichokes was doing splendidly. Plenty of gladioli were in flower as well. Post Script

The above describes the situation at our February meeting, where we were all surviving the drought and heat but also hoping for some good rain. The Weather Bureau had predicted some heavy falls over the next week or so, however we have all been disappointed before, when weather predictions for rain have come to nought, or so little that it only served to settle the dust. However at the time of writing we have enjoyed substantial rain, with over 100mm reported in most if not all members’ localities. This very welcome rain has almost certainly saved a number of gardens as well as removing the bush fire risk.

I think our March meeting will be a very cheerful one.

Fortunately, Tarago and district missed most of the summer fires. Areas such as Nerriga and Oallen were not so lucky. A few Men’s Shed members spent considerable time assisting on the fire ground or with Brigades behind the scenes.

Noel Sylvester has decided to stand down after 22 years as a first responder providing advanced First Aid in the Windellama area. Congratulations for a job well done. A comment from Noel at a recent shed morning tea was “no more pager going off at mid-night”.

As a first responder, Noel maintained his accredited training in advanced first aid and emergency scene management. This allowed him to respond to emergency situations and provide initial clinical management in the out-of-hospital environment. This can involve basic emergency triage, spinal stabilisation, use of infection control practices, external defibrillation, cardiac arrest and airways management and administration of a limited range of medications e.g. oxygen therapy, inhaled analgesia and adrenaline via an auto-injector. Noel has attended many motor vehicle and a few bus accidents over the years. Noel is also the Vice President of the Men’s Shed and will still act as our first aid officer.

Sponsorship. Once again Heron Resources have generously provided financial sponsorship to assist us to meet our insurance and operational costs. This enables the Committee to keep the membership fee at a low $10 per annum.

The Shed is located on Community land and the Council requires a carpark adjacent to the Shed for us to meet occupancy certificate requirements. The Progress Association has approved Tarago Village Discretionary funding for a carpark at the western end of the Shed. This is required by

The Committee has applied to the Veolia Mulwaree Trust to fund infrastructure works: an entry patio and veranda; a path along the front of the Shed and drainage and gravel works on the eastern and northern sides. These works will improve the community block and the Shed's appearance. In addition, we have included a request for funding to acquire several items of machinery which will enhance our Shed's capacity to produce saleable items. to contribute to our financial

Men’s Health Speakers Day Sat 28MAR. The Men’s Shed motto is “Shoulder to Shoulder”. We have been working to provide a health event that can do just that. Wives and partners have been invited to ensure that the subliminal response will be “yes, you are going”. Stuart Torrance from AMSA HQ will be giving a ‘Spanner in the Works’ health talk and giving us a rundown on the 2019 AMSA Conference. Judy Carmody from the Yass Office Rural Adversity Mental Health Program (RAMP) will also be covering men’s health, with an emphasis on the impact of the recent droughts and bushfires. We’re also lucky to get the Rugby Choir - this will be the third time they have put a concert on for our Shed. Good stirring stuff. Other Sheds in our region will be joining us, so we’re keen to have as many of our own members there as possible.

Member’s Profile: Robert Howarth.

Robert was born in 1951 at Wollongong, second of four sons to Roy & Joyce Howarth. They moved from Lake Illawarra to Gunning when he was five years old to escape the smog that caused him to suffer from asthma.

At the Gunning Central School, he completed the “Intermediate Certificate”. Afterwards working in the family businesses; a café, a picture theatre, a grocery store and milk bar, a school bus run, and a service station – up to three of these businesses at one time or another, over a thirty-six-year period.

Robert met the love of his life, Dianne in 1974 and married in 1975. They were blessed with a son in 1980 and a daughter in 1983. In 1978 they purchased a school bus run, which they have operated for 42 years, so far. He also worked for the State Rail Authority as a signalman and Area Controller for thirty-six years.

Robert has a long history of community service. He is life member and vice president of the Tarago Sporting Association, was president of the Tarago Hall Committee for some ten years or so, was the first vice president of the Tarago Men’s Shed and is still a committee member. As an active member of the school P&C committee whilst the children attended the Tarago public school, in summer he would organise a weekend camp once a month with up to ten families attending. With Gary Field (the ASM at Tarago Railway Station), there was Friday night social tennis and a town versus country competition. While not a big sportsman, he has played quite a few, tennis, golf, fishing, kayaking, snorkelling and bush walking among them. He has also ridden motorcycles, camped, caravanned and done quite a bit of car touring, even up to Cape York with some Men’s Shed members. Robert has taken lots of people on outings in the bus. This includes a number of Men’s shed trips to the air museum, a local winery.

Dianne has lived here all her life and I have been here for 44 years so far, having bought our plots on the hill I guess you could say we’re here until we drop, and then some.

Robert is our man for a joke or several. (not always quite suitable for general publication). He has set up his own little mobile work bench “in the shed” (refer photo). As “Mr Double Act”, he really does have two of everything and it seems one of which is always in his Cruiser, which we think is a Tardus because it can't possibly hold all that stuff!. He is also, bless him, prepared and able to help out at a moment’s notice, a real 'man' scout. He's great fun and a terrific community contributor.

Excursions and activities add diversity to our Shed life. We have scheduled:

• From 28 February - Membership renewal and Shed insurance is due;

• 15 March - a BBQ fund raiser at Bunnings Goulburn so that we can maintain our low membership fee of $10

• 28 March – Saturday will be a Men’s Health Day. We will involve 6 other sheds, 2 key speakers, lunch and a performance by the Australian Rugby Choir. Please see separate notice

• March or April - Autumn camping trip

• Late April - a BBQ at the shed.

• 30 May - Shed open day and donor presentations in conjunction with Tarago Markets.a camping trip to support recent fire ravaged areas.
